Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has enjoined Muslim women in Africa to spread the culture of peace and harmony in their communities as the Ramadan commences.

Mrs Jonathan made this call in a statement signed by Mrs. Ayo Adesugba, the Director of Information, Office of the First Lady in Abuja, urging Muslim women to use the period of Ramadan to rededicate themselves to God.

“Demonstrate submission to the Almighty by upholding an important pillar of Islam through the observance of fasting. They should also engage in spiritual introspection and rededicate themselves to God,” Jonathan, who is also the President, African First Ladies Peace Mission said.

According to her, there is the need for African women to inculcate tolerance, peace and humility in their children and wards, noting that these virtues were important values that should be embraced by Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

She further urged them to intensify prayers to change the hearts of those perpetrating violence and urged all Nigerians to shun acts of hate, mistrust and instability.

A terrorists’ intelligence cell headed by a businessman who participated actively in the abduction of the over 200 missing schoolgirls of Government Secondary School, Chibok has been busted by Nigerian army troops, Ministry of Defence said on Monday.

In a statement by the Ministry of Defence signed by Major General Chris Olukolade, the man, Babuji Ya’ari who is also a member of the Youth Vigilante Group popularly known as Civilian JTF which he uses as cover while remaining an active terrorist, also spearheaded the murder of the Emir of Gwoza. His main role in the group is to spy and gather information for the terrorists group.

Babuji has been coordinating several deadly attacks in Maiduguri since 2011, including the daring attacks on Customs and military locations as well as the planting of IEDs in several locations in the town.

The arrest of the businessman who is known to deal in tricycles has also yielded some vital information and facilitated the arrest of other members of the terrorists’ intelligence cell who are women.

One of them, Hafsat Bako had earlier escaped to Gombe State to avoid suspicion but was tracked and arrested.

Prior to her arrest, Hafsat coordinated the payment of other operatives on the payroll of the group. In her confession, she disclosed that a minimum of N10,000 is paid to each operative depending on the enormity of his task.

Another female suspect named Haj Kaka who doubles as an armourer and a spy for the terrorists group has also been arrested. Until their arrest, all the suspects actively operated a terrorists’ intelligence cell in collaboration with others still at large.

In another development, troops deployed in Goniri, Yobe State, over the weekend, had an encounter with terrorists, resulting in casualties on both sides after the attack was successfully repelled. [Vanguard]

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said Boko Haram’s attacks on churches in villages near Chibok, Borno, on Sunday were attempts to instigate religious violence in the country.

A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Reuben Abati, in Abuja, said Jonathan received reports of the attacks with dismay and consternation.

“I urge all lovers of peace and unity to wholly condemn the resurgence of efforts by agents of global terrorism to disunite and destabilise Nigeria by callously instigating violence among religious groups.

“The President shares the view of the most learned Islamic leaders and scholars that no true Muslim will resort to the mindless killing of innocent people’’, it said.

According to the statement, no true Muslims at any time, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, will redress any perceived grievance.

It expressed the President’s belief that the attacks and other similar atrocities by Boko Haram showed that its leaders and members were misguided persons who used religion to commit crimes.

“Jonathan urged Nigerians, irrespective of their religious beliefs, to resist the new attempt by Boko Haram to undermine their support for the armed forces.

“He reaffirmed the resolve of Federal Government and security agencies to intensify ongoing efforts to rid the country of terrorists.

“The president assures all Nigerians that the Federal Government and security agencies will continue to intensify efforts to end Boko Haram’s senseless attacks.

“He commiserates with the families and churches that lost loved ones, members and places of worship during Sunday’s attacks’’, the statement said. [NAN]

The Nigerian Medical Association on Monday announced plan to embark on an indefinite strike, starting from Tuesday, July 1.

The NMA President, Dr Kayode Obembe, who made the announcement at a news conference in Abuja, said the decision followed the expiration of a two-week ultimatum it gave the Federal Government to meet its 24-point demand.

Obembe said they opted for a total and indefinite strike at an emergency delegates meeting held on June 28, after negotiations with the government failed to yield relevant results.

He said, “The NMA is taking this painful route because our silence and gentle approach to these contending issues have been taken for granted.

“We have to take this action in order to save the health care delivery system from anarchy that is palpably imminent.”

He appealed for understanding, and called on Nigerians to prevail on the government to meet the demands.

The NMA president read out an open letter addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in which the association listed the 24 ssues it wanted the government to address.

The letter, entitled, ‘Minimum End Point for Restoration of Sustainable Sanity in Patient Care in Nigerian Hospitals’, was jointly signed by Obembe, NMA Secretary-General, Dr Adewumi Alayaki and all heads of its affiliate bodies.

Some of the major issues include reserving the position of chief medical director to only medical doctors, appointment of Surgeon General of the Federation, passage of National Health Bill and providing security for doctors.

The NMA also wants increase in duty, hazard and specialist allowances, as well as budget for residency training programme.

It called for the reintegration of its members into the IPPIS platform, and reserving the title of consultants to only medical doctors, among others.

France midfielder Blaise Matuidi has admitted that he was "disappointed" with his tackle that forced Nigeria’s Ogenyi Onazi off during les Bleus’ 2-0 World Cup last-16 success over the African champions.

Just before an hour had been played, the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder challenged the Lazio player in the centre of the field but was late to the ball and caught Onazi on the ankle – a blow that ended the 21-year-old's involvement and left Nigeria boss Stephen Keshi fuming.

Matuidi, who was only shown a yellow card for the tackle, has confessed that the challenge was a poor one but has protested that there was no intent to injure the Super Eagles man.

"I'm sorry," he told the media after the game. "I've not gone in to hurt him; I'm disappointed because I'm not a dirty player.

"I went into the [Nigeria] dressing room afterwards to apologise."

The PSG star had praise for the spirit of his side, who had spent much of the opening hour under pressure from their opponents before Paul Pogba's header and Joseph Yobo's own-goal sealed the win.

"We may not have the talent of previous generations but we have the heart and the mind," he said. "This is what has put us [in the quarter-finals]."

For midfield partner Pogba, the 27-year-old only had words of admiration.

"He has a great future and he showed that today," the Toulouse-born added stated.

Matuidi has 26 caps for France, which he will be aiming to add to when they meet either Algeria or Germany in the quarter-finals on Friday.

A 22-year old lady, Ruth Ubi, was on Sunday evening crushed to death after a vehicle knocked her down while she was assisting a little boy to cross the busy Atimbo road in the outskirt of Calabar, Cross River State.

Ubi, who was said to be on her way to a market at the Atimbo axis of Calabar, was aiding the five-year-old boy who found it difficult crossing the road when a Toyota Camry salon came out from an adjourning street to knock her down.

An eyewitness, Beatrice Inyang, told newsmen on Monday that Ubi’s brain was immediately smashed open by an oncoming trailer some micro seconds after the car had flung her body to the middle of the road.

She said, “I was trying to open the door of my car when I saw a taxi, (Toyota Camry) lifting the woman from where she was standing into a truck that was passing and the truck smashed the head and brain was all over the place.

“Immediately she fell, the trailer which was so close crushed her to death and the taxi driver who wanted to stop drove off on top speed. The boy she was holding however, escaped with injuries and has been taken to the General hospital.”

It was gathered that the trailer driver immediately escaped from the scene after the accident to escape being lynched by angry youths.

A relation of the deceased, who did not want to be named, confirmed that the lady was actually going to the evening market when she met her untimely death.

She said, “I was the one that asked her to go and buy some food condiments for us to cook. She overstayed and I was hearing people talking in low tones. I just decided to walk to the market which is close to where I live.

“It was along the road, I started hearing whispers from passers-by about what happened along the main road. Behold it was my younger one, killed by two vehicles. I only met the cap and pieces of clothes that she was putting on.”

Asked if she knew the boy who survived the accident, she said, no, adding “they only told me how she was to help a young boy to cross the road when she was knocked down, but the child survived.”

It was later gathered that the driver, whose identity was still unknown, was being detained at the Airport Police Station while journalist was barred from snapping the trailer which had also been confiscated.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, confirmed the incident, saying investigation was ongoing. He also said the driver of the Toyota Camry was still at large.

Ruthless jihadists spearheading a Sunni militant offensive in Iraq have declared an “Islamic caliphate” and ordered Muslims worldwide to pledge allegiance to their chief, in a spectacular bid to extend their authority.

Iraqi forces meanwhile pressed a counter-offensive Monday against executed dictator Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit, one of a string of towns and cities overrun by jihadist-led fighters in a swift advance that left more than 1,000 people dead, displaced hundreds of thousands and piled pressure on Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

Maliki’s bid for a third term in office has been battered by the offensive and he is no longer seen as the clear frontrunner when the new parliament elected in April holds its opening session on Tuesday.

A security source based near Tikrit said reinforcements had arrived with tanks and artillery on Monday.

An army officer said troops controlled parts of the outskirts of the city, some 160 kilometres (100 miles) north of Baghdad, which the militants captured on June 11.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant renamed itself simply the Islamic State (IS) and declared its shadowy frontman the leader of the world’s Muslims, in a clear challenge to Al-Qaeda for control of the global jihadist movement.

IS announced on Sunday that it was establishing a “caliphate” — an Islamic form of government last seen under the Ottoman Empire — extending now from Aleppo in northern Syria to Diyala province in eastern Iraq, the regions where it has fought against the regimes in power.

In an audio recording posted online, the group declared its chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi “the caliph” and “leader for Muslims everywhere”. Henceforth, the group said, he is to be known as “caliph Ibrahim” — a reference to his real name.

- ‘Sense of ambition’ -

Although the move may not have immediate significant impact on the ground, it is an indicator of the group’s confidence and marks a move against Al-Qaeda — from which it broke away, analysts say.

“I don’t think this materially changes anything,” said Shashank Joshi, research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute think tank in London.

“What it really changes is the sense of their ambition. It’s a potentially inspiring and invigorating movement for people worldwide.

“It will tempt many radicalised Muslims to join their cause.”

Baghdadi, thought to have been born in the Iraqi city of Samarra in 1971, is touted by the group as a battle-hardened tactician who fought American forces following the US-led invasion of 2003, and is now widely seen as rivalling Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri as the world’s most influential jihadist.

His group has drawn thousands of foreign fighters, attracted by a combination of Baghdadi’s own appeal, IS’s efforts to establish what it believes is an ideal Islamic state, and the group’s sophisticated propaganda apparatus, which publishes magazines and videos in English and a host of European languages.

The group is known for its brutality, summarily executing its opponents and this week crucifying rival Islamist rebels in Syria.

Since the Prophet Mohammed’s death, a caliph was designated “the prince” or emir “of the believers”.

After the first four caliphs who succeeded Mohammed, the caliphate lived its golden age in the Omayyad empire from the year 661 to 750, and then under the Abbasids, from 750 to 1517.

- Ottoman collapse -

It was abolished in 1924 after the Ottoman empire collapsed.

In Syria, IS fighters control large swathes of territory in Deir Ezzor near the Iraq border, Raqa in the north, as well as parts of neighbouring Aleppo province.

In Iraq, it has spearheaded a lightning advance since June 9, capturing sizeable territories in the north and west, including the country’s second city Mosul.

Iraqi forces initially wilted in the face of the onslaught but have mounted an ambitious counter-offensive to take back Tikrit, a battle which could be crucial tactically and for the morale of the security forces.

World leaders and leading clerics have pressed Iraqi leaders to unite and quickly form a government, but despite the urgency, politicians have warned that the process of choosing a new prime minister could take more than a month.

Though Maliki emerged from the April 30 election in pole position to retain his post, with his bloc winning by far the most seats albeit not a majority, his opponents have stepped up their criticism of him in the wake of the offensive.

Maliki’s national reconciliation adviser, Amr Khuzaie, said the crisis was even more dangerous than the brutal Sunni-Shiite violence that left tens of thousands dead.

“Now, the danger is definitely more… than 2006, 2007,” he told AFP.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode to retract his comment alleging that the APC, through its National Publicity Secretary Lai Mohammed, condemned the Federal Government for proscribing the terror group Boko Haram or face a legal action.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said at no time did it issue a statement condemning the proscription of Boko Haram, and challenged Mr. Fani-Kayode to produce such a statement if he was so sure the APC issue it.

It quoted Alhaji Lai Mohammed as saying: ”I have caused my attorneys to formally write both Fani-Kayode and Channel television, where he made his allegation, to retract the statement and apologize, failing which I will sue for defamation of character.”

”Our position on Boko Haram has been well articulated for anyone who cares to know, but at no time did we condemn the government for proscribing it. When the state of emergency was declared on three northern states, we criticized it and we stand by that. But we did not condemn the proscription of Boko Haram. We are not Boko Haram sympathizers and we cannot be under any circumstance,” APC said.

The party also condemned Mr. Fani-Kayode’s description of Boko Haram as the armed wing of the APC, saying the statement is most irresponsible, uncharitable and without basis.

”Equally irresponsible and condemnable is Mr. Fani-Kayode’s deliberate distortion of statements made in the past by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to mean that he or his party is a sympathizer of Boko Haram,” the party said.

It said Mr. Fani-Kayode’s latter day castigation of opposition politicians, after he returned to his vomit and repudiated all the damaging statements he made publicly in the past about the PDP and the Jonathan Administration, is not based on any altruistic considerations.

”It is common knowledge that Mr. Fani-Kayode has been charged by the Federal Government with money laundering. The trial is almost ending, and he knows he faces a certain jail term if convicted.

”It is therefore not impossible that Mr. Fani-Kayode may be seeking to ingratiate himself to the FG by using various media platforms to destroy the APC through accusing its leaders of being Boko Haram sponsors or that the party is bent on fielding a Muslim/Muslim ticket in next year’s presidential elections.

”Unfortunately, in his eagerness to please the FG and cut a deal to avoid going to jail, he has resorted to pathological lies aimed at calling the dog a bad name in order to hang it. Whatever evidence he has to prove that our party is a sponsor of Boko Haram, he should be prepared to tender such in court,” APC said.

The Ekiti Peoples Democratic Party has accused the All Progressives Congress of plotting to embarrass the Governor-elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The party made this known in a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, which was made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti.

The party said the APC leaders met at the residence of one of its national leaders in Lagos, where the plan was hatched.

But the Director of Publicity and Media of the APC in Ekiti, Mr. Segun Dipe, who refuted the allegation said the party did not have control over an agency of the Federal Government.

He said, “It is our concern that Ekiti must not be ruled by illiterates in the first instance. But how do we do that because we don’t have control over EFCC.

Why can’t they embarrass Fayemi? It is because Fayemi has walked clean.

“How can APC work on EFCC? We don’t have power at the centre and EFCC reports to the President.

“In the short run, we can say Fayose is afraid of his own shadow. We have more important things to do than running after Fayose. His past is haunting him. Let the people of Ekti State begin to enjoy the scene as it lasts.”

Oluwawole stated further that the APC leadership at the meeting made frantic efforts to consider the issue of ‘photochromic rigging’ as postulated by one of the national officers of APC but for lack of credibility and legal viability the idea was dropped.

He said that it was at this stage that a source in the meeting said one of the leaders suggested that Fayose could be embarrassed by compromising the EFCC to file fresh charges against Fayose knowing that the governor-elect’s counsels had rubbished the EFCC charges in the court.

The death toll from Sunday’s attack on three villages near Chibok in Borno State has risen to 53.

Also, many are said to have been displaced following the attacks from the Boko Haram insurgents, who launched an offensive, which was said to have lasted for about four hours, on Kautikari, Kwada and Karagau villages.

“Residents are fleeing from neighbouring villages into Chibok Local Government for fear of imminent attacks from the insurgents,” said a resident of one of the neighbouring villages near Chibok, Ishaya Ibrahim.

He added that thousands had been displaced in no fewer than 10 neighbouring villages as a result of Sunday’s attack.

“I and others fled to Chibok when we heard rumours that they would come back and we don’t know the next point of attack. Everybody is running to Chibok now. There is even no more space for people to stay inside the local government (secretariat); people are now sleeping on mats under trees with their little children.”

Ibrahim, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, claimed the gunmen wore army uniforms when they attacked a church in Kwada.

He said, “They brought out all the men inside the church and started shooting them, while anyone that tried to run away, they chased with an okada and shot him dead and also opened fire on everybody in the town as they were running away.

“As of yesterday inside that church, they killed 31 people inside and killed others outside. In the evening, we found other dead bodies inside the bush. On Sunday, the soldiers refused to go to the scene of the attack until after the insurgents had left the place. There is no security presence in Chibok.”

Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo has announced his retirement from the national side after the Super Eagles fell 2-0 to France in the second round of the World Cup.

The 33-year-old became the first Nigerian to play 100 international matches but capped it with an own goal in added time against Les Bleus.

He follows in the footsteps of Nwankwo Kanu who announced his retirement after the 2010 World Cup.

“It was a bitter-sweet moment for me but I think it is time to focus on my family,” Yobo told reporters. “It has been a long road.”

Yobo made his debut with the Super Eagles in 2001 but became a mainstay of the team during the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan.

He played at three World Cups and won the Africa Cup of Nations as captain last year.

“We’ve won the Africa Nations Cup and we came here and were not disgraced,” said the Fenerbahce man.

“I never thought that I’d be here because I missed the last six games of the season through injury. They gave me an opportunity but it is unfortunate what happened.

“I gave my all,” he said.

However, Yobo thinks that he’s leaving the national team in capable hands with the duo of defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Godfrey Oboabona able to continue in his place.

“They would grow,” he said. “Omeruo has done very well. Oboabona was injured but he got his chance at the Nations Cup. They’re going to get better, the experience is going to come and one of them has to take the responsibility and be a leader.”

The defender said he would like to concentrate on club football afterwards.

Ekiti State Governor-elect, Mr. Ayo Fayose, on Monday asked an Ekiti High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, to strike out a case seeking to stop him from contesting the June 21 governorship election already won by him.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate argued that the court lacked the jurisidiction to hear the case filed by a socio-cultural organisation, Ekiti Eleven and the Citizen Party.

His lead counsel, Mr. Raji Ahmed (SAN), argued that only the Federal High Court could hear the case since it involved the a Federal Agency-the Independent National Electoral Commission-and the National secretariat of PDP.

Ahmed said that the case in which the plaintiffs sought to stop his client from contesting the governorship election had been ovetaken by events as it had been won and lost.

Opposing the argument, the lead counsel to the citizen’s party, Norrison Quakers (SAN) argued that the case still had merit regardless of whether the election at hand had been conducted or not.

Supporting the argument, counsel to the ‘E-Eleven’, Mr. Raufu Balogun, insisted that the court had jurisdiction to try the case, and should therefore not strike it out.

He urged the court to dismiss the defendant’s counsel submission for lacking in merit, citing Section 31 of the Electoral Act.

Before adjourning till July 18 for ruling, Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi asked all the parties to submit their written applications on or before the said date.

The Plaintiff, Ekiti-Eleven, is seeking the court to compel Fayose to explain circumstances surrounding his 2006 impeachment.

The applicant contended that the former Ekiti Governor failed to disclose vital information regarding the grounds of his impeachment in 2006 in form CFO1 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The Super Eagles coach feels the official played a major role in his side's World Cup elimination at the hands of France

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has hit out at referee Mark Geiger in the wake of his side's 2-0 World Cup round-of-16 loss against France at Estadio Mane Garrincha on Monday.

The official failed to spot an alleged elbow from Olivier Giroud against John Obi Mikel, while he opted to show Blaise Matuidi a yellow card rather than a red card after a reckless tackle on Ogenyi Onazi in midfield, after the Lazio man had already sustained a knock following a collision with Paul Pogba.

Emmanuel Emenike also saw a goal disallowed for offside during the first half when replays apeeared to show he was level with Patrice Evra, leaving Keshi less than impressed with the officials.

"The referee made a lot of mistakes and that is questionable. I am not happy with it," the 52-year-old fumed at the post-match press conference.

"He was not good. He is a human being, but it was not good. He decides what's happening on the pitch.

"Onazi was tackled recklessly twice. He will be out for weeks. But the referee didn't do anything.

"This is the first time ever I talk about a referee like this, but he was bad.

"I wasn't sure [Emenike]'s disallowed goal was offside and would love to know why the referee cancelled it.

"It's painful to lose like this. I don't think we deserved to lose like this. But that's football."

As a parting message, Keshi thanked the Brasilia contingent for their support against les Bleus and suggested that the Super Eagles felt almost like the host nation at times during the tournament.

"I cannot ask for a better support than what we got today from the Brazilians. They were wonderful and were always behind us. It's almost as if we were a Brazilian team. I thank them for everything."

The Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, has said the Federal Government was not aware of the threat by Boko Haram to attack communities around Chibok town.

Omeri, who said this on Monday while responding to questions on the preventive measures taken by security personnel against the Sunday attacks on Kautikari, Kwada and Karagau villages, denied knowledge of the threat by the violent sect to attack the communities.

The insurgents attacked villages near Chibok in Borno State on Sunday, setting ablaze five churches and killing no fewer than 48.

In the offensive, which was said to have lasted for about four hours, the terrorists attacked churches during Sunday worship, shot at worshippers and set the church buildings ablaze.

The insurgents had two weeks ago written to the council area that they would attack it again and this was confirmed to journalists in Maiduguri by a top official of Chibok Local Government, who said the threat had been reported to the government and the security agencies.

He said, “Everyone in the LGA believes that the sect cannot be pocketed by security men. The letter has further worsened their fear.

“Whenever Boko Haram tells you that they are coming, they will never fail to do so. Our fear now is that we don’t know when and how they are going to come but our people are in great fear. We are calling for prayers as well as on government to provide adequate security in Chibok.”

But the Federal Government’s NIC Coordinator, who confirmed the attacks on the villages, stated that the government was not aware of the reported threat by Boko Haram to attack the villages.

He said, “We are not aware of Boko Haram threat letter to the communities; Boko Haram came to the villages , but the security agencies mobilised during the attack and repelled it and also killed a number of the insurgents.

“The insurgents are showing a lot of desperation, which means that they are nearing their end.”

African champions,Nigeria were knocked out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil on Monday, as the Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama went from hero to zero. His error helped France to a 2-0 World Cup last-16 triumph.

Enyeama, who plies his trade with Lille in the French top flight, made sensational saves from Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba, but the latter capitalised when the keeper flapped at a 79th-minute corner to book a quarter-final place.

A Jospeh Yobo own goal in stoppage time further compounded Nigeria's late misery.

The African nation entered the match under the cloud of a dispute over bonus payments with the Nigeria Football Federation, but Stephen Keshi's men played a full part in an entertaining goalless first half.

Emmanuel Emenike thought he put Nigeria ahead, only to fall foul of a marginal offside call, while a stunning stop by Enyeama somehow prevented Pogba from volleying France in front.

As in the first half, France weathered pressure and finished stronger - Victor Moses' goal-line clearance and further heroics from Enyeama denying Benzema either side of Yohan Cabaye clattering the crossbar.

And Pogba headed into an unguarded net before Yobo put through his own net to set up a last-eight tie for France against either Germany or Algeria on Friday.

Nigeria's pace and drive in attack left France disorganised early on and when Olivier Giroud hacked over from Benzema's 15th-minute pass, it marked a rare moment of encouragement for Didier Deschamps' team.

Emenike was similarly off-target from a promisingly-placed free-kick, before the Nigeria forward was denied by a 19th-minute offside flag.

France right-back Mathieu Debuchy breathed a sigh of relief having horribly sliced a clearance to Ahmed Musa, whose low cross was touched home by Emenike at the near post.

Enyeama made a remarkable reaction save after Pogba drove forward and smashed a 23rd-minute volley goalwards on the end of Mathieu Valbuena's return cross.

A drop in tempo around the half-hour mark clearly suited France, but Debuchy could not capitalise when a patient spell of possession sent a half-chance his way.

The Newcastle United defender was wasteful again in the 40th minute having been teed up by the impressive Valbuena.

A frantic close to the half matched its opening, with France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris far from convincing behind a speculative Emenike drive.

Peter Odemwingie - the match-winner in Nigeria's decisive Group F victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina - tested Lloris with a 65th-minute drive that bounced awkwardly, while tension in the French ranks was increasingly shown by sloppy errors in possession.

But Deschamps' men came agonisingly close to leading with 20 minutes left as Benzema exchanged passes with Giroud's replacement Antoine Griezmann.

The Real Madrid forward's effort was partially stopped by Enyeama and Moses was back to hack clear as the ball looped towards the net.

Benzema's low cross was cleared for Cabaye to thunder a rasping shot against the bar and Enyeama excelled himself again to keep out a Benzema header.

But he erred from Valbuena's resulting corner as France took the lead, making a later outstanding stop to thwart Griezmann seem particularly cruel.

Nigeria's defence became disjointed in the closing minutes and Yobo's own goal under pressure from Griezmann made the defender's 100th cap one to forget.

The last five times that France have taken part in the knockout stages of the World Cup, they have reached the semi-finals or better. Now Germany or Algeria stand between this sequence continuing.

Disgraced Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has finally admitted to biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

The Liverpool forward has been barred from all football-related activity for four months, banned for nine competitive international matches and hit with an €80,000 fine.

Suarez had previously denied biting the defender, instead insisting his face "hit against the player, leaving a small bruise ... and a strong pain in my teeth" but has now come clean.

The fallout from the incident has been vast and wide-reaching, with the president of the Uruguay Football Association, Jose Murjica, calling the ban "fascist" and Uruguay team-mate Diego Lugano branding it an "act of barbarity".

Suarez was previously banned for seven matches in 2010 for biting PSV's Otman Bakkal, during his time at Ajax before being suspended for a further 10 games after biting Branislav Ivanovic while playing for Liverpool.

The Uruguayan FA have informed Fifa that they will appeal against the ban, though it remains to be seen if Suarez's apology will change their stance.

Chiellini himself has called the punishment on Suarez "excessive" and took to Twitter shortly after the Uruguayan's apology to make it clear he holds no grudges over the incident.

Uruguay’s President Jose Mujica has slammed FIFA leaders as “sons of bitches” for banning the country’s star striker Luis Suarez over his infamous World Cup bite.

Mujica called the four month ban on all football activity imposed on Suarez for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini “fascist sanctions”.

The president made the comments to a state-run TV sports show which asked Mujica his opinion of the World Cup as he welcomed the defeated Uruguayans on their return from Brazil late Sunday.

“Those at FIFA are a gang of old sons of bitches,” Mujica said. He gasped and put his hand to his mouth in an I-can’t-believe-that-I said-that manner, but smiled.

The journalist asked if he could publish the remark. “For my part, sure,” Mujica shrugged.

“I support the president’s remarks,” added his wife, Senator Lucia Topolansky, who was stood next to him.

“They could have sanctioned him,” said Mujica, a 79 year-old ex-guerrila, “but not with fascist sanctions.”

Suarez bit Chiellini during Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy to secure a place in the last 16. It was his third offence of biting an opponent.

FIFA slapped Suarez with a four month ban on all football activities, a nine match international suspension and a 100,000 Swiss francs ($112,000, 83,000 euro) fine.

Without Suarez, Uruguay lost 2-0 to Colombia on Saturday.

The Suarez sanctions have been harshly criticized in Uruguay. Mujica welcomed Suarez at Montevideo airport when he arrived Friday ahead of the team.

In his weekly radio address on Friday, Mujica said the Suarez punishment “will be an eternal shame” in the history of the World Cup.

The Minister of Information and Communication, Mr. Labaran Maku has urged Nigerian leaders especially those from the North to cooperate with President Goodluck Jonathan as the government seeks to achieve peaceful coexistence and development in the region.

The Minister made the call Monday in Jos, the Plateau State capital at the flag-off campaign of the Jos Pilot digital switch-over (DSO) where analogue television broadcast is switched over to digital to conform with international standard.

He also appealed to the leaders to imbibe the spirit of understanding and tolerance amongst them for the country to move forward.

Mr. Maku said, “the North is known for her high moral discipline and good conduct so it is time for our people to give peace a chance and embrace oneness”.

He however reassured Nigerians that the digitization campaign is to ensure that those who cannot afford digital television are brought up to date in global television broadcast trend.

Maku stressed over 40 million “set up boxes” are made available to all the viewers across the 36 states of Federation maintaining “the flagging off of digital programming in the country will be one of the largest employers of labour in West Africa.

According to him, “There is going to be a serious exploitation in the TV contents capacity that would provide good programs and the country is going to face increase in number of television channels with extra available digital endless stations”.

Also speaking, the Director General, National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Mr, Emeka Mba said the digital switch-over will be vehicle in addressing economic and political challenges of people as well as improve their ways of live.

Mba commended Governor Jonah Jang for transforming the State-owned media, Plateau Radio/Television Corporation, PRTVC.

However, the State governor, Jonah Jang who also spoke at the event challenged the NBC to used the enlightenment campaign to allay the fears of Nigerians by addressing fundamental questions that will arise in the minds of the people.

The governor decried the decline and near absence of high quality local programmes and call for the trend to be reversed.

Jang reiterated the State’s preparedness in the switch over campaign saying, “the Plateau State government in line with this trend has spent over N2.5billion in the upgrading of facilities of the State-owned Radio and Television station to enable it fit into the global digitization technology”.

He called on Nigerians to embrace the trend in order to keep pace with the ever changing tempo in television broadcasting. [Vanguard]

Nigeria star John Obi Mikel has insisted that the team is all that matters for Stephen Keshi’s men and that none of the players are looking for individual glory, saying that no-one wants to be the African side’s Diego Maradona.

The Chelsea midfielder stressed that it’s all about the team rather than about individual glory.

“I only care about the team. Nobody wants to be the Maradona of this team,” Mikel said at a press conference ahead of Nigeria’s round of 16 game against France.

“We don’t want to be talking about individuals. We all want to do our utmost for the team and I will keep giving my all.”

“It will be a spectacular game and we are very motivated. The match could be decided by details. It will be a close encounter.

“I have played against some of the France players before in the Champions League. The coaches have also done their homework on how to approach the game and have given us all the details we need,” he noted.

mass burialPresident Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday condemned bombings targeted at a brothel in the Bayan Gari area of Bauchi State and the mass killings of people in Sanga Local Government of Kaduna State, saying those responsible for the gory acts would be brought to book,

ICPCThe Court of Appeal sitting in Makurdi, Benue State, has held that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has the powers to investigate and prosecute cases without first receiving petitions.

The ruling is sequel to an appeal filed by the ICPC on June 21, 2011, which asked the appellate court to set aside the judgment of a Nasarawa State High Court that discharged and acquitted the chairman of Toto local government area of the state and the director of finance of the council over alleged involvement in corrupt practices.

Justice I. A Ramalan (now retired) had, in his verdict on May 20, 2008, discharged and acquitted the accused persons on “11-count charge of conspiracy to inflate prices of stationery and furnishing of false information, contrary to sections 26[1][c]; 22[3]; 19; and 16 of the ICPC Act”.

But the certified true copy of the Court of Appeal’s judgment delivered on May 2, 2014, and made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday, reversed the judgment of the lower court and ruled in favour of the ICPC.

In the judgment delivered by a justice of the Court of Appeal, Obande Ogbuinya, the appellate court cited sections 6[a] and 27[3] of ICPC Act and held that “a petition is just a guide and it is not ultra vires the powers of the commission to investigate and prosecute offences outside a petition or initiate investigations and prosecutions without a petition”.

Jega-RepsThe forthcoming 2015 general elections might be jeopardized if no urgent steps are taken to address the problem of funding besetting the Independent National Electoral Commission, the House of Representatives has said.

The green chamber, which made this known through its Committee on Electoral Matters, said that INEC, as a matter of fact, had no money to conduct the 2015 polls because the Federal Government was underfunding the commission.

The committee chairman, Hon. Jerry Manwe, specifically said that the INEC needed N120bn to conduct the election but that it had less than half of the sum.

Manwe said, “Out of the N120bn that INEC proposed, only N45bn was given to the commission by government. It means that the commission is short of a huge difference of N75bn.

“We have alerted the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office of the Federation; we as a committee, we cannot initiate a supplementary budget for INEC.

“As it stands, INEC has no money to conduct the elections. If they are not able to get supplementary appropriation, there will be serious problems”.

The lawmaker said time was already running out on the commission to get some of its programmes for the election running.

Hon. Manwe noted that funding challenges could mar the elections, voicing concern that while everyone was already looking forward to the election, questions were not asked about the financial capacity of INEC to deliver on its mandate.

He stated that his committee had come to the conclusion that only a supplementary budget could bail INEC out of its present financial predicament following a series of interface with the commission’s chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and independent investigations conducted by the committee.

“As the Committee on Electoral Matters, our work is to alert the relevant authorities to our findings and the implications for the 2015 elections”, Manwe explained.

He, however, expressed optimism that the Federal Government would address the issue with a supplementary budget in the weeks ahead.

“We are waiting to see what happens as we enter July, but it is important to say that this is the situation for now”, he added.

Barnabas GemadeThe Senator representing Benue North-East senatorial district, Barnabas Gemade, yesterday distanced himself from the widely peddled allegations in the state that he had perfected plans to assassinate Governor Gabriel Suswam, describing the allegation as a calculated ploy by some mischievous politicians to rubbish his image.

The former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the clarification on Sunday in an interview with newsmen in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

He insisted that he had never in his political carrier attempted to assassinate any rivals or their character.

Gov. Suswam is reportedly eyeing the Benue North-East senatorial seat and has to contend with Gemade for the PDP ticket to represent the district in the National Assembly.

This is even as unsubstantiated rumors claim that the senator had failed in his bid to assassinate Suswam.

However, the elder statesman described the rumor as untrue, adding that some politicians were cooking up allegations to drive a wedge between him and Governor Suswam especially now that he (Gemade) had declared his intention to re-contest for the seat.

According to the senator, he is determined and not joking with his quest to contest and retain his seat in 2015, stressing that no amount of political maneuvering from some political quarters would deter him.

“I am going in for second term and I will win the seat. I was unopposed when I contested in 2011, it was a keen contest and even at that time, some persons attempted to deep hand in it. But for those that are saying they made me senator, they are only joking.

“I have not failed in attempt to assassinate Suswam as widely reported by men who are bent to pull people down and cause mischief. I have never assassinated anybody since my political carrier but I want to contest this senatorial election to enhance rapid development to the people”, Gemade stated.

Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has proved that he is a great asset to the Super Eagles in all the three matches they played to get a chance in the second round against France today at the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia.

Today again, his heroics are expected to see Nigeria move into the quarter finals if they overcome the firepower of a France attack that is hinged on Karim Benzema. On paper many rate the Super Eagles as the under-dogs of this match, Enyeama has boldly told everyone that the Nigerian team fears nobody in this World Cup and France cannot be an exception.

After overcoming the pecuniary problem that dimmed the Black Stars of Ghana and made the once-dreaded Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to become easy preys, the Eagles have promised not to go the way of their African brothers. Many say that the Nigerian team perform better under difficult times.

“We fear nobody,” the 31-year-old with magnetic gloves said. “We have a culture for football. It’s our way of life. To be honest, we have great confidence in ourselves. We respect the French team but we are not afraid of any team in this competition”, he sounded.

The burning enthusiasm to add the Les Blues of France to their list of victims is so overwhelming.

Captain and record bearer of the Eagles, Joseph Yobo who guns for his 10oth cap for Nigeria was as emphatic as Enyeama when he told his team mates that they have nothing to fear when they play France today.

“We’ve just played against the best forward in the world(Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, Aguero), so we’re ready to measure ourselves against anybody. I don’t see what we should be afraid of. I believe in this team, and I think we can do it”.

Yobo said that the Eagles have very good players who can match up to what the French think they have. ‘’We have one of the best goalkeepers in the World in Enyeama. We have Musa, Emenike, Mikel, Onazi and many others. We are a good team and we are going to show it to the rest of the World tomorrow (today) in Brasilia”, he said.

The Police in Lagos State, weekend, burst a kidnap gang operating at Ajah area of state and rescued a female banker and one other, while a member of the gang was arrested.

It was gathered that the female banker identified simply as Ladi and the other victim, identified as Patrick, were kidnapped by the gang last weekend at Elemoro area of Ajah while driving into their houses.

The kidnappers were said to have double crossed the victims with a Toyota Camry car and whisked them away in separate operations.

Police sources disclosed that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N100 million for the release of the victims but it was later reduced to N6 million.

A source further added that a combined team of SARS and SIB operatives were deployed to Ajah in search of the victims, but they succeeded on the sixth day as they found them abandoned in a forest at Elemoro area of Ajah.

According to the source, “the operatives tracked the kidnappers to a forest and while they were combing the place for the victims, they spotted a man who looked suspicions and arrested him. The man posed as a bricklayer, but after a short interrogation it turned out that he was a member of the kidnap gang and was taken into the forest in search of the victims who were later found while their kidnappers escaped.“

It was gathered that the suspect, whose name was withheld as the policemen were still on the trail of other members of his gang, confessed that his gang was based in Delta State but relocated to Lagos three weeks ago. Our source also added that the suspect said the gang had planned to use the N6 million ransom to rent an apartment they would use as hideout.

National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, yesterday, said it would be difficult for Nigeria to survive another four years under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, if things continued the way they were in the country, saying there were several unanswered questions in the last governorship election in Ekiti.

Oyegun, who spoke in Benin City, said his party decided to concede victory to the PDP in the governorship election in Ekiti State because it did not want anything that could make the people react negatively and violently.

He, however, hinted that the party would challenge the trampling on the fundamental human rights of the members before, during and after the election.

Urging Nigerians to embrace APC as the new party with a different agenda to fix Nigeria, he said: “We are presenting our party as new, and different. We have done the studies as people who truly care. There is no way we can prove it to you because we have never ruled this country, but we can tell you to look at our states. We are not pretending to be angels. Politics is not a seminary, neither is it the Papacy, but what is important is what one is doing with the lives of the people. That is what is critical.

“Are you restoring hopes to their lives are you making their lives better? If not for themselves, do they believe that the lives of their children will be better? Are your policies concentrated on improving their lives? Are the sectors working in the interest of the ordinary Nigeria? Do we have power, do we have quality schools, do we have security, and do we have jobs? Can we continue in this kind of state? I have told people who are ready to listen that this country cannot survive another four years of PDP administration. There is no way it can survive it, so we need people who have plans to start taking care of these issues, and that is what the APC represents.”

Ekiti poll

He claimed that many persons who had no business in Ekiti State were allowed into the state while those with concrete reasons to be there were denied entry, insisting that was what the party would challenge.

“Ekiti election, to some extent is still a mystery. It still has aspects that we are trying to unfold but the first point is, because we are a party of change, because we are a party that wants to show Nigerians that there is a different way of doing things, that the party doesn’t have to be bitter, in-spite of all our reservations, the governor was advised to concede, inspite of our reservations for a lot of reasons,” he added.

The United States said on Friday it had decreased its surveillance flights in the search for the about 219 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, but added that the overall effort was unchanged due to more flights by other countries.

It stated that it had no idea of the location of the girls, noting however that there is no letup in the efforts to locate and rescue them.

“We don’t have any better idea today than we did before about where these girls are, but there’s been no letup of the effort itself,” Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters, according to Reuters.

Kirby said the same level of effort was being sustained now through international involvement.

A US defence official speaking on condition of anonymity said American flights had been reduced only after a body of intelligence had been gathered and that the cuts had been offset by the British and the French support.

Kirby denied a suggestion that US flights over Nigeria had been reduced to accommodate increased US surveillance over Iraq, where Washington is flying unmanned and manned aircraft to gather intelligence about Sunni insurgents.

He said some of the resources that were being used in Nigeria had been diverted from other missions in Africa and could now be used elsewhere on the continent.

Officials declined to say how long heightened U.S. surveillance over Nigeria had lasted.

Asked whether it was just a week or two, the defence official said, “No. We were building this baseline for a good period of time.”

US surveillance flights over Nigeria were now intermittent, the source said.

US military personnel are in Abuja helping to coordinate the effort, and some 80 others were sent to Chad in May to support the surveillance operation.

Chad is northeast of Nigeria and borders the area in which Boko Haram is known to operate.

In the last month, US officials had played down expectations about a swift rescue of the girls and stressed the limitations of intelligence from surveillance flights.

One US official voiced concerns that Boko Haram might have booby-trapped areas where the girls could be held, and there had been reports that they might have been split up into groups that were not being held in one place.

The defence official said surveillance alone would not lead to a resolution. “It will take the Nigerian piece of the equation with their own sources and human intelligence coupled with the other forms to really understand the picture,” he noted.

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post on Friday, President Goodluck Jonathan said his government and security services had “spared no resources, have not stopped and will not stop until the girls are returned home.”

A number of churches in northeast Nigeria were attacked by suspected Boko Haram Islamists on Sunday, near the town of Chibok where more than 200 teenage girls were kidnapped in April.

Witnesses say they fear that yet again, dozens have been killed.

Here are some of the deadly raids, kidnappings and bombings that have been linked to Boko Haram this year:

- February 15, 2014: An attack blamed on the extremist sect leaves more than 100 people dead in the mostly Christian village of Izghe in the north-eastern state of Borno.

- April 14: Gunmen kidnap 276 female high school students in Chibok, Borno. Fifty-seven managed to escape but the rest are still being held. Several foreign countries, including the United States, have joined forces to try to find the girls.

- April 14: A blast at a bus station packed with morning commuters at Nyanya, on the southern outskirts of Abuja, kills at least 75 people, the most deadly attack to date on the capital. Boko Haram claims responsibility. On May 1, a car bomb at the same spot kills 19, and leaves 80 injured.

- May 5: At least 300 people are killed in an attack in Gamboru Ngala, in Borno state near the border with Cameroon, which totally destroys the town.

- May 20: At least 118 are killed and 56 injured in two car bomb attacks on a market in Jos, central Nigeria, which go off within 20 minutes of each other. The regional governor blames Boko Haram.

- June 1: At least 40 are killed when a bomb explodes at a football stadium in Mubi in the north-east of the country shortly after a match. The attack is blamed on Boko Haram.

- June 3: Hundreds are feared dead in a suspected Boko Haram attack on four villages in Borno state, with local leaders putting the death toll as high as 500.

- June 17: 21 football fans are killed when a bomb rips through the viewing centre where they are watching the World Cup in Damaturu, northern Nigeria.

- June 24: Local officials report 30 killed and more than 60 women kidnapped in a series of attacks over several days in Borno state, although the Nigerian government denies the abductions.

- June 25: At least 21 people are killed and 17 injured in a bombing at a crowded shopping centre in the centre of Abuja. The attack — the third on the city in three months — is blamed on Boko Haram.

- June 29: Suspected Boko Haram gunmen riding on motorcycles target a number of churches during Sunday mass, opening fire on worshippers and chasing them into the bush. Witnesses fear dozens are killed.

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi says a place in the quarter-final should take precedence over his record as the first African to lead an African team to the second round at the FIFA World Cup.

Last year he became the first black African coach to have won the Africa Cup of Nations in 21 years, and last Wednesday he helped Nigeria secure a place in the round of 16 at Brazil 2014.

The former Nigeria captain said. “For me, my team and country come before any personal glory.

“That we made the second round and are able to achieve this against all odds is all that matters.”

There have been suggestions in some quarters that Keshi’s achievement in winning the Nations Cup and taking his team to the knock-out stages has not been given the value it should by the international media.

“What is important is to focus on what lies ahead – not Stephen Keshi and his record,” Keshi said.

Nigeria will face France for only the second time at senior level on Monday in Brasilia.

In their previous clash, the Super Eagles beat France 1-0 in a friendly in Saint Etienne in June 2009, but Keshi says it will be a different ball game against the French as Nigeria aim to equal Africa’s all time best.

Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana have all reached the quarterfinals in 1990, 2002 and 2010 respectively.

“We are not bothered about the past but only interested in this present day,” Keshi added.

“My boys know what I expect and our opponents will not make life easy for them.

“The Super Eagles have never made it to the quarterfinals so they can make history of their own.

“There’s no motivation bigger than that.”

Keshi is one of only two men who has won the Nations Cup as a player and a coach – the other being Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary.

In 1994 Keshi captained the Super Eagles to their second continental success in Tunisia and 19 years later he was in charge of the side as they won the trophy for the third time in their history in South Africa.

He also led Togo to their first – and to date only – appearance at the World Cup finals, but was sacked a few months before Germany 2006. He is the only African coach to have qualified two nations to the World Cup tournament.

Costa Rica kept their World Cup dream alive as they beat Greece on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the last 16 on Sunday.

Earmarked as whipping boys having been drawn alongside England, Italy and Uruguay in Group D, Jorge Luis Pinto's men shocked the world by winning the pool with a haul of seven points.

And another chapter was written in their remarkable story in Recife on Sunday as, following a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes, they triumphed in the shootout against a Greece side who know all about beating the odds following their Euro 2004 victory 10 years ago.

That Costa Rica even forced spot-kicks was incredible given they suffered the heartbreak of seeing Sokratis Papastathopoulos force extra time with a last-gasp strike.

At that stage, it appeared Oscar Duarte's 66th-minute sending off, which came after Bryan Ruiz put the South Americans ahead, would prove decisive.

But having produced a string of stunning saves to deny Greece in outfield play, Keylor Navas was the hero of the shootout as he kept out Theofanis Gekas' effort.

Despite the pressure of attempting to take Costa Rica to the quarter-finals for the first time, Michael Umana then coolly converted to set up a last-eight meeting with Netherlands.

The game initially lived up to its billing of vibrant attack meeting dogged defence as Costa Rica surged forward with verve.

Costa Rica's endeavour almost brought early reward, too, when Christian Bolanos powerfully struck over from a tight angle.

Greece enjoyed a good spell themselves thereafter, although their final ball left a lot to be desired.

That was also the story at the other end as Costa Rica failed to make the most of good openings with the match becoming increasingly stretched.

When a good delivery finally did come, it almost brought an opener as Jose Holebas' superb left-wing cross to the back post located Dimitris Salpingidis, whose cushioned finish was brilliantly kept out by Navas' right foot.

That was the sole bright moment of a largely turgid first period, yet Costa Rica ensured the second would be decidedly more exciting by scoring in the 52nd minute.

Ruiz was the man to find the net, his fortuitous finish from 20 yards wrong-footing goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis following Bolanos' slide-rule pass.

Seemingly holding all of the aces at that stage, Costa Rica were reduced to 10 men midway through the second period when Duarte was sent off for a second bookable offence following an ill-judged sliding challenge on Holebas.

Suddenly sparked into life, Greece pressed forward in numbers and got their equaliser in the 91st minute when Papastathopoulos rifled home after Navas had produced a fine save to deny Gekas.

Costa Rican disappointment quickly turned to relief, however, when Navas produced a stunning save to turn Konstantinos Mitroglou's header over the crossbar.

Inspired by the efforts of their goalkeeper, Costa Rica's defenders were similarly heroic in the first period of extra-time, producing a host of crucial late blocks.

Remarkably, it was the 10 men prospering in the second half - although Greece missed the best chance when Lazaros Christodoulopoulos hit straight at Navas following a quick counterattack in which Fernando Santos' side had a five-on-two chance in their favour.

There was still time for one last opening, too, as Navas produced another fine save, this time denying Mitroglou from point-blank range.

An impressive shootout ensued as the first seven were converted until Navas athletically kept out Gekas.

Umana then made no mistake, his conversion sending the Costa Rican supporters into delirium.

Islamist militant group Isis has said it is establishing a caliphate, or Islamic state, on the territories it controls in Iraq and Syria.

It also proclaimed the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as caliph and “leader for Muslims everywhere”.

Setting up a caliphate ruled by the strict Islamic law has long been a goal of many jihadists.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s army continued an offensive to retake the northern city of Tikrit from the Isis-led rebels.

The city was seized by the insurgents on June 11 as they swept across large parts of northern-western Iraq.

In a separate development, Israel called for the creation of an independent Kurdish state in response to the gain made by the Sunni rebels in Iraq.

Isis (the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) announced the establishment of the caliphate in an audio recording posted on the internet.

It said the Islamic state would extend from Aleppo in northern Syria to Diyala province in eastern Iraq.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group said, would become the leader of the state and would be known as “Caliph Ibrahim”.

In the recording, the rebels also demanded that all Muslims “pledge allegiance” to the new ruler and “reject democracy and other garbage from the West”.

Isis also said that from now on it would be known simply as “the Islamic State”.

On Sunday, Iraqi government jets struck at rebel positions and clashes broke out in various parts of Tikrit, witnesses and officials said.

“The security forces are advancing from different areas”, Lt-Gen Qassem Atta told journalists. “There are ongoing clashes.”

Troops had reportedly pulled back to the nearby town of Dijla as Saturday’s initial offensive met stiff resistance.

The heavy fighting over the two days caused many casualties on both sides, eyewitnesses and journalists told the BBC.

A heavy downpour on Saturday has flooded Ibadan, drowning 15 people in the Oyo State capital city.

10 casualties were recorded at Apete area of the city on Saturday, while another five persons including three children of a woman taking refuge in a C&S church located around Olodo river were said to have been swept away by the raging flood.

A man identified as Fatai Osuolale gave the account of the Olodo incident, saying that the C&S church and some buildings were submerged.

He said rescue team has found one body, but search was still on for the bodies of the victims.

He added that a car was also seen floating on the flood noting that the owner escaped unhurt as he was seen after the flood had subsided trying to remove his car.

Meanwhile, the death of about 10 people at Apete area has triggered street protests by some irate youth who felt that the slow pace of work on the main bridge led to the death of the people.

During the protest, the youths vandalized the work station of the contractor handling the Ijokodo-Apete road and the bridge linking the two communities.

Since the bridge linking Ijokodo community and Apete, Ajibode, Arula, Awotan, Olomo and other communities collapsed during the August 26, 2011 flood disaster, construction work on it has been going on at a snail speed.

The Caretaker Chairman of Ido Local Government, Prof. Joseph Olowofela, who described the incident as unfortunate explained that it was the volume of the flood that thwarted the effort of the council to erect a stronger make-shift bridge there.

“I was here on Friday with the contractor that was to erect the bridge. But we realised that the volume of the water was too much so we decided to wait for it to come down. Unfortunately, heavier rain fell on Saturday which swept away the existing one. We are hearing lots of stories about the incident but we are yet to ascertain how many people were actually involved. Those who were rescued have been taken to a hospital,” he said.

“We have a large number of people here so we will go ahead and construct the bridge. Whatever we do is a palliative measure because the state government through a contractor is already working on a standard bridge that will be completed before the end of this year,” Olowofela added.

Prof. Musa Abdur-Raheem, guest speaker at the 9th Ramadan Lecture of Muslim Media Professionals of Nigeria (MMPN) held in Abuja has decried the security situation in the country, but stated that Islam had nothing to do with terrorism.

“Boko Haram are not representing Islam, Muslims are for peace and most of the victims of Boko Haram attacks are Muslims,” he said.

He therefore called on leaders in the country to live up to expectations by urgently addressing the nation’s security challenges and advised all groups to channel their grievances through legal means instead of fomenting trouble.

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Secretary-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), also called on security agencies in the country to be fair and professional in the discharge of their duties.

Oloyede, who delivered a keynote address at the Ramadan lecture described the security situation in the country as serious.

The Islamic leader said Muslims in Nigeria were for peace as long as there was justice and fairness, adding, “Muslims are not responsible for the violence in the country. Muslims are for peace. If there is any problem, it is a failure of the system.”

The scholar noted that there “cannot be peace without justice. Our appeal is that Federal Government should be just to all segments of the society.” Oloyede said in the spirit of the theme of the lecture, “Peace and Leadership: The Missing Link”, there should be more consultation and dialogue among the stakeholders in the country.

Chairman of the Association, Abdurrahman Balogun, had earlier urged politicians in the country to play politics according to the rules of the game.

“As 2015 general elections approaches, politicians should play the game according to the rules.

“Fear Allah in all their dealings and remember that everyone will account for all deeds in the hereafter,” Balogun said.

The United States weekend said it had reduced its surveillance flights in the search for more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram members on April 14 in Chibok, Borno State, but added that the overall effort was unchanged due to more flights by other countries.

“We don’t have any better idea today than we did before about where these girls are, but there has been no let up of the effort itself”, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters. Kirby said the same level of effort was being sustained now through international involvement.

A US defence official speaking on condition of anonymity told Reuters that US flights had been reduced only after a body of intelligence had been gathered and that the cuts had been offset by British and French support.

According to him, some of the resources that were being used in Nigeria had been diverted from other missions in Africa and could now be used elsewhere on the continent.

In the last month US officials have played down expectations about a swift rescue of the girls and stressed the limitations of intelligence from surveillance flights.
