Atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is the absence of belief that any deities exist. Atheist conclude that the existence of God can be neither proved nor disproved. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which, in its most general form, is the belief that at least one deity exists and in Nigeria there are beliefs that many dieties exist, so being an atheist is something many Nigerians will find rather odd like homosexuality. INFORMATION NIGERIA has put together 5 things anyone who doesn’t believe in the existence of a deity faces as a Nigerian…
People will say the person is possessed by a demon: Nigerians even before the advent of Christianity and the white man, Nigerians have believed in different deities from Ogun to Sango, and this has been passed down from generation to generation. So for a Nigerian to say he is an atheist, he/she is viewed with suspicion and sometimes hate. People would equate your lack of belief with allegiance to the devil.
People will say your soul is ripe for condemnation: According to the two predominant religions in Nigeria, anyone who doesn’t believe in God, will be condemned and with those beliefs engraved in people’s hearts, anyone who comes up to say he doesn’t believe will be seen as someone doomed for destruction.
People may discriminate against you: Being an atheist in Nigeria earns you a stigma. No one wants to associate with you ones you are fingered as one who doesn’t belief in a deity.
People view you as bad influence: People see atheist in thesame light they see religious extremist or gay right activist. They would want to get away from you so you do not infect them with your very ‘unGodly’ mentality.
Do you agree???
