Maiduguri, the capital of troubled Borno State, was thrown into pandemonium on Friday as sounds of explosion was heard in parts of the town.
It was quickly assumed by residents that the town was under attack again by the terrorist group, Boko Haram.
It was discovered that some explosives were planted before dawn in a commercial area by suspected members of the terrorist group.
The terrorist group had wanted the area to be filled with people before detonating the bomb, but fortunately, it was discovered and the military were called in to prevent casualties.
The spokesman for the youth vigilante group, Jubrin Gunda, said there was no need for panic as the explosion heard was diffused by the military to forestall any casualties.
He said, “The attention of the security was called to a strange package dropped at the busy Custom area of the town this morning (Friday).
“The people of the area woke up to see the strange object and immediately called the attention of the military, who moved to the place to discover that it was an explosive device.
“They went to the area and diffuse the bomb at about 10.45am.”
It was the sound of the diffused bomb that was heard in some parts of the town that caused panic. Gunda however revealed that there was no casualty as it was a controlled detonation.
Meanwhile, the sound of the bomb caused panic in the town as some residents of the area had to remain indoors for a long time and the military condoned off the area in which the explosives were found.
Security was heightened in the town to forestall a reprisal, with thorough checks being conducted on vehicles on all major roads in the town, which resulted in heavy traffic in the town.
