Adamawa State Governor, Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd) has stated that only God and posterity would judge his resolution to stand by the people even in the face of powerful forces whose agenda was to subject the people to untold hardship.
Nyako, who spoke through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, was reacting to a question of whether the state government had any plans of scuttling the extension of the emergency rule as requested by President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of Tuesday’s Senate plenary where the final decision on the subject will be adopted.
The governor said as a leader, he had done his best to ensure that the emergency rule was not extended, stressing that despite his opposition to its extension, there was little or nothing he could do to force the hand of the senators to support his position.
According to him, it is unreasonable for government to keep adopting the same procedure to solve a problem even though previous experimentation has only worsened the situation on ground.
“This is the third time the federal government is extending the emergency rule in the three states but it seems that, with every renewal of the rule, the security situation in the three states keeps degenerating, which calls for strategy review”, he said.
Nyako took a swipe at the president over his refusal to invite the three governors of the affected states to a meeting to review the security situation before the extension was contemplated, saying it was an indictment on the federal government, who he accused of turning deaf ears to the voices of reasoning as well as using its powers to repress and subjugate the people.
“The three states are currently under military occupation and the situation was even made worse by the fact that the military are carrying out their operations without paying scant respect for rule of engagement, which make them lose the confidence and cooperation of the people”, he said.
He added that the current doubt being expressed by the US military as well as other top political officials of the Obama administration and elsewhere about the insincerity of the federal government to resolve the insurgency, was a confirmation of his earlier statements about the lacklustre attitude of the federal government in the fight against insurgency, which unfortunately put him in the bad books of the federal government.
