Police in Nairobi are still investigating the death of a young man who reportedly committed suicide on Saturday after English Premier League (EPL) champions, Manchester United, went down at home to Newcastle.
The United fan met his death in Nairobi’s Pipeline Estate after Newcastle beat Manchester United 1-0.
Identified as John Macharia, the fan reportedly jumped from the seventh floor of the building where he was living and died instantly.
According to his friends, Macharia, who was watching the match in a pub in the estate, left the social joint terribly disappointed and later jumped from the seventh floor of a residential building.
This is not the first incident in Kenya involving fans of English Premier League teams.
In May 2009, a Kenyan Arsenal fan committed suicide in the same estate following his team’s 4-1 aggregate drubbing by arch-rivals United, in the UEFA Champions League semi-final.
Alphonso Oloo, 29, hung himself in his Arsenal shirt, after the match.
About three years ago, a young woman in her early 20s, a staunch Chelsea FC supporter residing with her parents in Nairobi, committed suicide after the team lost an EPL match.
