Murtala Nyako Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State yesterday said contrary to speculation, his son, Abdulaziz Nyako, will not contest the state’s governorship election in 2015.

Speculation had become rife that Nyako was preparing Abdulaziz, who is the Sarkin Matasa Adamawa, to take-over from him in 2015 following peace initiatives being spearheaded by his son in the state coupled with the influence he exerts on the administration.

Nyako, whose aides have in the past dismissed the rumour unsuccessfully, while addressing his supporters in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, insisted that such thoughts had never crossed his mind.

“My son will not contest any election in 2015. What we are doing is for peace, progress and unity of the state and the nation in general. The way the PDP is operating in Adamawa is inimical to peace and unity”, he said.

Nyako, a member of the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) which merged with the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, called on people of the state to register en masse with the APC because of its people-oriented policies which are geared towards economic development and social stability.

He accused the PDP of betraying the people in spite of their contributions to the development of the party and their role in ensuring its victory at all levels in past elections.

The governor likened the plight of the people of Adamawa under the PDP to that of the Biblical Israelites under Pharaoh, saying, “God ordered Moses to strike the Red Sea, paving way for the Israelites to escape! God has ordered us to go and join the APC! The party offered better opportunity with a level playing field for everyone. There is no new comer or old member in the APC, so go and mobilize your people to join the popular movement”, he said.

State chairman of the Nyako faction of the PDP, Alhaji Mijinyawa Umar Kugama, declared their total support for the merger with APC and urged all members to work towards victory for APC in Adamawa.
