Two militant groups that fought each other in the last 10 years for control of the oil and gas rich Okpai Kingdom in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, have surrendered to the traditional ruler of Okpai Kingdom, Igwe Goldring Ugbome II, with an appeal to the Federal Government to consider them for amnesty.
Chairman of Okpai Community Development Committee, CDC, Mr. Augustine Ikwuobo-do, a former militant, who brokered the peace deal that was consummated at the palace of the Igwe, narrated how the struggle for control and leadership of CDC tore the kingdom apart, leading to an attack on the Igwe’s palace, which was razed in 2004.
Igwe Ugbome survived the attack, but lost all his property and fled to Asaba for refuge until the reconciliation of the warring militant groups.
He appealed to Okpai youths to shun violence and refuse self-seeking elites and elders within and outside Okpai Kingdom from using them to destabilise the community or arming them to destroy lives and property.
