Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, refused to cancel the Presidential election results from Rivers State despite the outrage that greeted the widespread irregularities.

Speaking Tuesday in Abuja before the result was announced, Jega attributed the delay in the announcement to a protest the INEC received from the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Sunday morning.

In it, the APC alleged among other irregularities that election did not hold and results were falsified.

He stated that the commission dispatched to Rivers a three-man fact finding committee including the election coordinator in the state.

According to him, the team found out that election actually took place and there was no fact to establish the claim that election results were substituted.

He said the INEC therefore decided that the allegations were not substantiated and that the irregularities in Rivers were similar to what happened in some other states and therefore not enough to cancel the election and reschedule it.

“We do not believe the allegations are substantial to cancel and reschedule the election in Rivers. We have decided to announce the result,” Jega declared.
