The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has received disturbing reports of the security details of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, being withdrawn in the last few minutes at the venue of the announcement of the collated results of the Presidential elections.
Our reports also include a fear that the Chairman of the Commission may be abducted at this venue.
Situation Room is calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to take immediate steps to guarantee the security and safety of the Chairman of INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega, all of the National Commissioners and staff of the Commission currently carrying out the national duty of announcing results of the elections.
We call on all Nigerians to be calm and peaceful as Professor Jega has demonstrated in his conduct of proceedings this morning.
