The Bauchi State Government has banned the transportation of more than one passenger on private or commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada.



The ban was was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ishola Adeyemi, and made available to newsmen in Bauchi on Friday.





“The state government has observed with dismay the practice of some operators of commercial and private motorcycles carrying two or more passengers,” the statement read.



It said the ban followed the prevailing security situation in the country and hazards of such practice.



Adeyemi said in the statement, “Motorcyclists have been banned from carrying more than one passenger. There should always be two people on a bike, consisting of the rider and one other passenger.



“The government is calling on the general public to comply with the ban which is in the general interest of the public. Security agents have been directed to enforce the ban and deal decisively with violators.”



The government reiterated its determination to ensure protection of lives and property of law abiding citizens of the state.
