Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, yesterday, said he had e-mailed the Ghanaian Parliament, requesting it to investigate the recent killing of a Nigerian student in that country.

The governor made the statement in Ikeja, while addressing some students who had come to protest against the hike in Lagos State University, LASU, fees.

The governor said the killing of the student was unfortunate, noting that the case must not be allowed to be swept under the carpet.

It will be recalled that Godwin Ayogu, a 300-level Nigerian student of the Gold Coast University, was recently murdered in Ghana by unknown persons.

His body was dumped by the roadside, while the Ghanaian authorities were yet to begin any investigation into the matter.

Fashola said: “The killing of a Nigerian in Ghana is very unfortunate as he was a victim of very mindless violence. I am trying to reach the Ghanaian Parliament to see how we can intervene to assist in the investigation of Godwin Ayogu’s incident, who died at the Cape Coast University. I sent an e-mail to one of the parliamentarians. I am still expecting a feed back and hope the right steps will be taken.”

Fashola also condemned the recent killing of Adelabu Tunde, another Nigerian student in Malaysia, describing his death as unfortunate.

The governor urged the relevant authorities to take urgent steps to end the incessant killings of Nigerian youths abroad.

Saudi

Nigerians living in Saudi Arabia Monday urged the Federal Government to establish primary and secondary schools to cater for Nigerian citizens in the Arab nation.

Sambo was in Saudi Arabia as the head of a top level Federal Government delegation to the award ceremony of Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Lemu, winner of the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam for the year 2014.

This was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by Vice President Namadi Sambo’s Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Umar Sani.

According to the statement, President of the Nigerian Professional Workers in Saudi Arabia and the Chairman of the Nigerians resident in Saudi Arabia, Shamsudden Fagbo and Bashir Suleiman respectively, made the request when Sambo met with Nigerian community in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“They noted that such efforts have been done by other African countries like Ghana and Mali and called on the Federal Government to replicate such laudable initiative.

“Both leaders further enjoined the use of Nigerian curriculum when such schools have been established and to ensure that examination bodies in Nigeria conduct examinations in those schools,” the statement said.

The statement reported that the Vice President, after acquainting them of the developmental strides in all sectors of the Nigerian economy, promised to convey their request to government.

Sambo, who urged them to always be good ambassadors of Nigeria, assured them of the readiness of the government to partner with them in bringing development to the country.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) today took staged a protest at the Lagos State Government secretariat, Ikeja over hike in fees of the Lagos State University (LASU).

Students numbering about 200 stormed the governor’s office chanting songs and carrying placards with various inscriptions, some of which read “What has the poor done wrong?” and “Fashola Reduce LASU fees’’

After attempts by security details at the governor’s office gate to prevent the students from entering almost failed, Governor Babatunde Fashola ordered that the protesters be allowed to come and express their grievances.

Sunday Ashefon, NANS South-West Zone Coordinator, who led the protest, described the increase in LASU fees from N25,000 to N250,000 as prohibitive.

According to him, the increase had affected students of the institution who have had to drop out because they could not afford to pay.

“The fees are not just affordable; some of our colleagues have opted out of LASU simply because they cannot pay from N250,000 to N350,000 school fees.

“These prohibitively high fees are some of the highest paid by any university in the country. Children of the poor can no more attend LASU and this is sad.

“What Nigerian students want therefore, is nothing but reversal of the fees to the initial N25 000. APC as a political party promises change, we want that change in LASU too,’’ he said.

Nurudeen Yusuf, LASU Student Union President, also noted that the hike in fees in the institution had resulted in many problems in the school.

He noted that the hike had not only forced out some students because they could not pay, it had also resulted in falling standards.

“The glorious days of LASU are disappearing and we can’t really see any justification for the new fees,’’ he said.

In his response, Fashola said the decision of the state government to increase fees was to reposition the university and make it a centre of academic excellence.

He said the N25,000 paid before now by students will not guarantee the kind of high quality education they deserve to get, noting that the high fees were part of efforts to create a university where the children of the poor and the rich could learn and achieve together.

“It is not right to keep a university only for the children of the poor. That doesn’t make a university anymore,” Fashola said.

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has condemned Edo State Government for going ahead with the competency test for primary and secondary school teachers in the state on March 22, 2014, despite an injunction of the National Industrial Court sitting in Abuja, restraining the government from conducting the said test, pending the determination of the teachers suit before the court.

In a statement by its Benin branch Chairman, Mr. O. Akere, weekend, the NBA said, “We wish to remind the Edo State Government that the strict observance of the rule of law as a fundamental pillar of democracy and adherence to due process are some of the indices by which a responsible government is assessed. The colossal failure of the said competency test is a demonstration of the fact that a determined legitimate resolve of a people cannot be defeated even with the barrel of a gun.”

Akere commended teachers in the state for not writing the competency test, saying, “we are also in receipt of information that there is a clandestine move by the Edo State Government to remove from payroll, names of workers whose years of service were legitimately extended as a result of study leave without pay.”

NBA described the move as an affront to the rule of law and a challenge to the sensibility of the people of the state and advised the government to desist from taking such unlawful and disgraceful step.

It noted that it was the responsibility of any responsible government to do things to enhance the welfare of workers and not to undermine same, as the decision to extend the services of workers who went on study leave without pay was a decision of the Federal Executive Council in 2006, which was subsequently adopted by the Edo State Executive Council.

“Even if the Edo State Executive Council decides to reverse its decision on the issue, such reversal should not be retro-active,” it said.

The King of Pop will come alive on May 13, as Epic Records announces that it will release ‘Xscape’, an album featuring eight brand new, previously unheard tracks by the late pop king.

The world will hear the new tunes due to the efforts of Epic Records chairman and X Factor judge L.A. Reid, who was granted unlimited access to Jackson’s archives by his estate. In the archives, Reid uncovered what a press release calls “four decades of material on which Jackson had completed his vocals.”

Reid selected eight tracks for the album and then sent them out to be retooled by producers, including recent Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake hitmaker Timbaland, in a process Reid calls “contemporizing.” Reid only chose producers who had “the gravitas, depth and range” to maintain the “essence and integrity” of Jackson’s work.

Fingers crossed, Jackson fans.

Confab-in-session.jpgThe Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP, has urged northern governors and other leaders in the region to have a change of heart on their plan to resist issues relating to resource control and creation of new states at the ongoing National Conference.

MOSOP President, Mr. Legborsi Pyagbara, who made this known in a statement signed by his Media/Public Affairs Advisor, Mr. Bari-ara Kpalap, said that the northern sentiment on the issue of resource ownership, control and state creation revealed ulterior motives.

Pyagbara stressed that the position of the northern part of the country on the issue could jeopardize the North/South relationship, adding that it was wrong for the North to always vent its opposition to national matters with threats.

He further stated that the Ogonis’ participation at the National Conference was mainly to pursue its interest in state creation, resource control and ownership, environmental remediation, restoration and protection.

The statement reads in part: “As the National Conference progresses, the apex organization of the Ogoni people, MOSOP, has called on the people of northern Nigeria, including its delegates to the conference, elders and governors to rescind their planned resistance to issues of state creation, resource ownership and control supported by the South.

“The expressed northern sentiments no doubt betrayed sinister motives, which in our view, may not augur well for the conference and North/South relationship.

“It is alarming that at crucial times in this country such as this, the North has been behaving as if other parts of the country are mere vassals that have no real legitimacy and rights and must subject to their whims and caprices.

“Our bitter experience has been that any time that the North wishes to get its way against the interests of other nationalities in Nigeria especially on the issue of resource ownership and control, it emphasizes that the present arrangement impoverishes the North and would vent its opposition with threats.

“It is painful to note that when groundnut was the mainstay of the economy, they controlled benefits that accrued therefrom and communities outside of their region especially those of the Niger Delta accepted it in good faith”, Pyagbara stated.

He warned that the North’s resort to hiding behind international laws would not put it (North) in better stead against the position of MOSOP.

atiku_abubakar_olusegun_obasanjo_746638344Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the olive branch extended to him by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and urged Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of forgiveness in the interest of national unity.

In a statement issued by his media office in Abuja Monday, Atiku said “forgiveness is divinely inspired and is an oil that lubricates the wheels of continued human interactions and engagements”.

The former Vice President commended Obasanjo, his “former boss for taking this bold and Godly step in the interest of the nation and humanity”.

Information Nigeria earlier reported that Obasanjo had while reacting to a request by the Northern Youth Leadership Forum, NYLF, on Sunday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, that he should forgive his former vice-president of whatever sin or offence he committed, said he had forgiven Atiku.

Obasanjo replied that though he had no grudge against anyone including Atiku, but quickly added that if there was any, “I have forgiven all as a father”.

According to Atiku, the process of national healing and reconciliation should advance to a new level and extend to other citizens of our great nation, who may have had grievances against one another.

He urged politicians to learn from the words of Mahatma Ghandi that an eye for an eye will make our nation go blind.

“When I made a similar effort few years ago, it was on the conviction that it would not be beneficial to me before Allah, if I went to the grave with bitterness. Let us forgive one another so that we can team up for national rebirth”, Atiku urged Nigerians.

He maintained that even if one disagrees with Obasanjo, no one would doubt his firm commitment to the unity of Nigeria.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Aji, has said 1,050 civil servants that are in the service illegally will be retired in the next three weeks.

Aji made the disclosure at the ongoing 60th anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Public Service Commission in Abuja.

He said the screening done by Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System discovered that the 1,050 civil servants were supposed to have retired from the service long before now.

“Through the IPPIS, we are able to screen those who are supposed to have retired long time ago and they will leave the service within the next two to three weeks,” he said.

The head of the civil service said that it would create opportunity for those in legitimate service to be promoted.

Aji said that there had been synergy, cooperation and collaboration between the HOCSF and the Federal Civil Service Commission.

He assured that the Federal Civil Service would be better in 2014, adding that it would not relent in its efforts to improve the service.

The Chairman, FCSC, Mrs Joan Ayo, said the commission came into existence in April 1954 with the functions of employing, promoting and disciplining of civil servants.

She said that since the commission was the gateway into the service and exit way, the commission should be guided by some rules.

“As the ‘entry into’ and ‘exit out’ the service, the FCSC is committed to the traditional core values of the civil service.”

She listed the core values as including meritocracy, anonymity, integrity, political neutrality, discipline, impartiality, accountability and transparency.

Ayo said the celebration was necessary in order to recall the exploits of the founding fathers of the civil service.

“We are celebrating the past and looking at where we have got it wrong, so we can improve and do it better,” she said.

The FCSC boss explained that the civil service was that organ of government that performed vital advisory role.

The Secretary to Government of the Federation, Sen. Ayim Pius Ayim, said government would ensure improved service.

Ayim, who was represented by Mr Linus Awute, the Permanent Secretary, General Service of SGF, congratulated the efforts of the founding fathers who had worked tirelessly to ensure transparency and meritocracy.

Some oil marketers on Monday threatened to embark on industrial action following the shutdown of Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company by National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.

The News Agency reports that NUPENG shutdown the NIPCO facilities on March 24.

Mr. Abidemi Agunbiade, Chairman, a concerned group of IPMAN, expressed worries over the looming fuel scarcity in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

Agunbiade said that the shutdown of the NIPCO had affected over 1,000 marketers who had paid money to load petrol.

According to him, over 450 million litres of fuel imported to discharge into NIPCO depot are still on the high seas due to the shutdown of the company.

“About four vessels are on the high seas including those of the NNPC.

“The stranded vessels are paying demurrage of 15,000 dollars to 20,000 dollars on daily basis due to the shutdown of NIPCO by the leadership of NUPENG,’’ he said.

The concerned marketers said that the shut down had congested Apapa jetty with vessels that were ready to discharge products to NIPCO tank farms.

Agunbiade said that about 80 million litres of petrol had been shut at the depot.

He said that the depot dispensed over 20 per cent of total fuel demand of the nation.

Agunbiade said that all the retail outlets of IPMA would be shut down if NIPCO was not reopened by March 31.

“We are just being careful not to shut down our retail outlets nationwide because we control over 87 per cent retail outlets.

When the correspondent of NAN contacted Mr. Isaac Eberare, National Ssecretary of NUPENG, he said “I am not in Lagos, I don’t know what is happening.”

“The NUPENG president is the only person that can answer the question on NIPCO’s closure,’’ he said.

NAN correspondent, who visited NIPCO on Monday, reports that marketers and workers of the company were still protesting the closure of the company and said that they were ready to commence operations.

NAN also reports that the situation in the depot has become tense.

Some tanker drivers said that they had exhausted all the money on them after staying in the depot for over eight days.

NUPENG Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Oladejo Ambali, who addressed the workers, said that the situation was fast assuming a dangerous dimension.

He promised to take the workers’ grievances to the national leadership of the union.

sss-attackAt least 21 members of the terrorist sect, Boko Haram, who were detained at the State Security Service (SSS) headquarters in Abuja, lost their lives yesterday during a failed jailbreak attempt.

The Sunday morning incident shattered the peace of the highbrow Asokoro, which plays host to the high and mighty of society including the official residence of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the sporadic shooting sent shivers down the spine of many in the city.

The aftershock was felt across the country as initial reports suggested the Aso Rock Villa had come under attack from insurgents but the presidential spokesperson later assured Nigerians that President Goodluck Jonathan was safe and well, saying the shooting was from the SSS headquarters.

The SSS later doused the tension when it announced that there had been an incidence of attempted jailbreak.

The detainee, who coordinated the failed jailbreak, died in the ensuing melee while some detained insurgents and three SSS operatives were injured.

The SSS said 18 of the detainees were killed during the attempted jailbreak. Three, who were injured, later gave up the ghost in the hospital.

The service also said two of its operatives were seriously injured.

The SSS gave the breakdown in a statement by its Deputy Director, Public Relations, Marilyn Ogar.

The statement said: “Following our earlier releases, it has been established that eighteen (18) casualties were recorded, while two (2) Service personnel sustained serious injuries.

“Three (3) other detainees who sustained gunshot injuries during the incident have also died.

“Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing to ascertain the immediate and remote causes. Any other detail will be communicated”.

Ms Ogar had in her first reaction to the incident said it occurred during the breakfast session for the detainees.

According to her: “One of the suspects attempted to disarm him by hitting him at the back of his head with his handcuff.

“His attempt to escape drew the attention of other guards at the facility who fired some shots to warn and deter others.

“The gun shots attracted the attention of the military with whom we have an understanding of mutual assistance in the event of any threat.

“The Army immediately deployed a team to reinforce our perimeter guards to forestall any external collaborators. The situation has since been brought under control. Further details will be communicated”.

President Goodluck Jonathan has prayed for the quick recovery of the ailing Governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Danfulani Suntai as preparations for the 2015 general elections enter top gear. He also vowed to reclaim Adamawa State from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A 46 year old Nigerian lesbian asylum seeker in the UK, Adejumoke Apata, says she risks a death sentence if she is deported to Nigeria.

Ms Apata says she fled Nigeria in 2004 and claims that her girlfriend who refused to go with her, was brutally murdered by vigilantes in 2012.

Before she left Nigeria, Adejumoke said she was subjected to homophobic torture, persecution and a brutal arrest after she was exposed as a gay woman. She claims she was also sentenced to death by stoning for being a lesbian.

Adejumoke, who is facing deportation, doesn’t want to be deported and has started a campaign aimed at persuading people to sign a petition against her deportation.

“Returning to Nigeria is not an option for me, because as well as a death sentence hanging over me, I will face 14 years in prison due to the anti-gay law that was passed by the Nigerian Government in January 2014. I want to remain in the UK in order to contribute positively to the society and support my girlfriend, who I am now engaged to,” Adejumoke said in a YouTube video.

apc-vc-pdpThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday frowned at the All Progressives Congress, APC’s resort to using a section of the media to attack the personality of individuals and institutions of government, describing the development as “ill-conceived” and a “wicked offensive”.

The ruling party said APC, rather than organize itself towards the 2015 general elections, was busy focusing on mischief, warning that the opposition party’s plan to “incite the people and unleash mayhem” should it lose in the forthcoming polls would not work because Nigerians are now wiser.

A statement signed by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in Abuja on Sunday said “It is rather despicable that instead of coming out with tangible explanations that would delink it from the negatives for which Nigerians have rejected it, the APC, now haunted by its ugly shadow, has resorted to yet another diversionary tactics of propaganda, blackmail and falsehood, this time, using paid consultants masquerading as newspaper columnists to attack and insult individuals including the person of President Goodluck Jonathan”.

While stressing that it was unperturbed by these attacks from the APC as it would continue to expose the antics of the party, Metuh said, “We completely stand by our position that the APC is a party of unpatriotic persons whose agenda is to destroy our democracy and the unity we enjoy as a nation.

“This wave of attack is clearly part of APC’s ‘Janjaweed’ ideology of destruction and inciting the people against individuals, especially government officials, in furtherance of the plot to undermine the system and balkanize the nation along ethnic and religious lines ahead of the 2015 general elections; an agenda which has already failed.

“We are aware that the APC has engaged the services of foreigners who have since been imported into the country to do the hatchet job in collaboration with the paid consultants who pocket as much as N5 million naira for each negative publication.

“We are however aware of failed efforts by the APC to compromise credible Nigerian columnists and bloggers, who, for the love of our dear country and fear of God, refused to be made agents of destabilisation”, the statement said.

The ruling party called on Nigerians to ask APC to reveal the source of funding for its “negative publications”, stressing that it was pertinent to know so as to “ensure that the funds are not coming from the resources meant for the development of their states where the people are already subjected to untold hardship on account of the looting and heavy taxes by the APC”.

Metuh also accused APC of exhibiting crass hatred for President Jonathan, saying it is a party of hypocrites; of wolves in messianic robes seeking to deceive Nigerians with the promise of change.

“We wish to state categorically that the APC as presently constituted has nothing to offer” the PDP spokesperson said, adding that “It is not an alternative to the PDP neither is it an option to Nigerians. Its orchestrated mantra of change remains cosmetic, hypocritical and hollow, unless we now speak of change from democracy to dictatorship.

“By every indication, the APC is a rudderless ship heading for crisis and self-destruction. We want Nigerians to note that whilst the leaders of the APC have continued to focus on attacking people and causing confusion, the PDP has focused on sensitising the people as well as strengthening and expanding its support base.

“Whilst the APC leaders have relegated their duty of organising their party ahead of elections and remain fixated on mischief, PDP leaders are working hard to organise our members in all the states, local government and wards of the country for a successful outing in 2015.

“Nigerians must note that as we march towards the general elections, the APC has no single democratic structure on the ground. It still lacks genuine followership and has no defined presence at the grassroot. On the other hand, the PDP remains the party with the largest number of members and supporters and shall continue to be committed to the national interest for the good of all.

“We wish to remind the APC that he who fails to work, works to fail. This is the ultimate fate that awaits them in 2015 and they should have nobody but themselves to blame. Of course, as bad losers, the only plan the APC has perfected is to incite the people and unleash mayhem in furtherance of its greater plot to truncate our democracy by reenacting the ugly experience of December 1983. This agenda has also failed as Nigerians are no longer in the dark regarding who the true enemies of our dear country are”, the statement concluded.

Allison-Madueke-jetThe All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly warned against any attempt to put pressure on the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts that is currently probing the disturbing jet scandal involving Minister of Petroleum Resources Diezani Alison-Madueke.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the investigation into the scandal is of great public interest, hence those who are reportedly piling pressure on the committee should desist.

It said the allegation that the minister has spent 10 billion naira of taxpayers’ funds to junket around the world in chartered private jets is very serious and cannot be swept under the carpet as the PDP-led Federal Government will like to do.

“Scandal is the hallmark of the PDP-led Federal Government and the presidency, hence both may not feel the public anger at the report that a minister, whose most notable ‘achievement’ is her contribution to Nigerians’ burden with her fixation on endless fuel price increases, has been frittering away the country’s resources on the altar of unprecedented profligacy.

“But Nigerians are interested in knowing the truth. Since the presidency has shown no interest in unraveling the truth about the latest scandal to hit the country under its watch, the House of Representatives which has taken on the challenge of seeking the truth should not be hindered by anyone.

“Nigerians will like to know whether or not the minister spent the huge funds on jets, who authorized the spending of such funds, whether or not the expenditure was appropriated by the National Assembly and which laws allow a government minister to junket around the world even on private trips”, APC said.

The party commended the Public Accounts Committee for its diligence and stated willingness to be fair to all and to carry out a thorough investigation.

APC further urged the committee members to continue to put the interest of Nigerians above any individual or party’s interest and to rebuff any attempt to pressure them against carrying out their constitutional duties.

Fuji musician, Alhaji Abass Akande, better known as Obesere, may have further proved his innocence about the rape allegation leveled against him by Ms. Olanike Olaiya, a couple of weeks back, by releasing a video CD, Rape Scandal, which threw light on the allegation.

The CD which contains Obesere’s interview and that of his witness, Alhaja Bolatito Omo Owo revealed how the incident that almost dragged the name of the sensational musician to the mud happened. And it has been in circulation since its release on Monday, March 17, 2014.

An insider disclosed to ENCOMIUM Weekly that Obesere’s quest to satisfy the yearnings of his teeming

fans, home and abroad, informed his coming out with the video CD.

“Obesere has released the video CD which explains better what actually transpired between him and his accuser, Nike Olaiya. I learnt the CD has sold thousands of copies. Everybody wants to see the face of the girl. I also learnt that some music promoters and marketers have been lobbying Obesere for the musical video of the incident, which I learnt may be released before the end of the second quarter of the year. But I think Papa is just waiting for the outcome of the police investigation before going to the studio for the album.”

Obesere himself too insists he didn’t do the video for monetary reasons. He told Encomium:

“I want people, especially my fans, to get a clearer picture of what really happened between myself and Nike Olaiya. Also, the inclusion of Alhaja Bola Omo Owo’s interview in the video is to let the public know that I have nothing to hide. I am sure everybody can recognize me, but I want people to also see the face of Alhaja Omo Owo so that they will all know she’s not a fake person. Rape Scandal was produced to explain everything in detail. It wasn’t for monetary reason, but all of a sudden, everybody keeps requesting for a copy.

By now, Nike should just come out and defend herself. Her picture is also on the jacket of the CD. Everybody knows that Papa can never rape and that will never happen. I believe that won’t be the first time Nike will be swindling men. It’s God that exposed her. That’s why she is running up and down. Everybody has seen the face of a scammer. Very soon, she would show up or be fished out.”

Reacting to the video development on Sunday, March 23, 2014, Olaiya said:

“Let them go ahead with their video CDs. If they like, they should come out with 10 of such, it doesn’t bother me. Very soon, the whole world will know the truth. All I know is that sinners won’t go unpunished. But I thank God I am okay now.”

Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako, yesterday, slammed President Goodluck Jonathan for blaming insurgency in the North on governors, whom the president claimed failed to provide basic education for their people.

Nyako described the President’s claim as unfortunate insisting that it was the poor leadership exhibited by the Jonathan administration that had aided and abetted the rising spate of terrorism in the North.

Nyako, who spoke through his director of Press and Public Affairs, Ahmad Sajoh, stated that it was the failure on the part of the Jonathan Presidency to tackle insurgency with the required political will that had given rise to the escalation of terrorism in the North East.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that if there is any proof of bad governance, it will be located in the way and manner the President executes his priorities and the kind of statements he and his spokespersons make.

“Governors are not and cannot be held responsible for security challenges since they have no control over security apparatus. The President is the Commander-in-Chief with powers over the Armed Forces, Police and other security agencies,” he said.

“We do not have the resources to cover the level of sophistication displayed by the insurgents in their operations. We do not have command over the Military as to deploy them away from strategic targets of the insurgents or allow the insurgents safe passage during curfew hours.

“Our states hardly receive enough allocations to even meet our most basic needs let alone spend it carelessly. In addition, we have the added responsibility of carrying the burdens of the Federal authorities in our state. Moreover, we do not have the moral burden of missing monies not accounted for on our heads as is the case with the Federal Government.

“Nigerians should hold the Jonathan administration responsible for all the security challenges in the country including insurgency, oil theft, kidnapping for ransom and armed robbery.

“No matter what the President says or does, this government has failed Nigerians. It has turned out to be a “Government of impunity by the incompetent for the advancement of corruption.” The signs of incompetence are everywhere,” Nyako said.

On his part, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State said that the president may have been misquoted based on what he said were clear indications that the administration in Borno inherited the insurgency and had tackled it within the resources available to it.

Jonathan had at a Peoples Democratic Party rally in Bauchi on Saturday accused the governors of not doing enough for their people and always blaming their misfortune on bad leadership exhibited by the centre.

He noted that the failure on the part of the governors to cater for the basic education needs if the citizens was responsible for the insurgency that had engulfed the area.

In his reaction articulated by his spokesman, Isa Gusau, Shettima said:

“Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has the highest regard for the President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and will therefore, not join issues with him. The statement in reference does not even apply to Governor Shettima because while the statement was said to have referred to governors in the North east that have served for eight years in office, Governor Shettima has served for less than three years and it is to the knowledge of everyone that in the case of Borno State, Governor Shettima inherited the Boko Haram crisis in May, 2011.”

Some members of Odua Peoples Congress, OPC, weekend engaged policemen in Tolu Police Division, Ajegunle Area of Lagos, in a gun duel over the release of a suspect.

A suspected member of OPC was shot dead in the process. A passer-by was hit by a stray bullet and one policeman was also shot while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

A police van was also burnt by the OPC members and part of the station torched as their attempt to burn down the whole station met with resistance from the policemen.

Trouble was said to have started when a teenage girl had a misunderstanding with her lover who was owing her N7,000. When the 18-year old girl reported the matter to OPC members last Friday, they apprehended her boyfriend and allegedly tortured him in their hideout.

Another account had it that the man bought some goods worth N7,000 and refused to pay, threatening to beat up the teenager, who subsequently ran to the OPC for justice.

When news about the apprehension of the man reached policemen at Tolu Division, a team was reportedly drafted to the OPC’s hideout where the victim was rescued and brought to the station. The next day, OPC members reportedly stormed the station demanding for his immediate release.

An eyewitness told Vanguard that “Immediately the OPC people came, they started shaking the gate of the station, demanding that the man that was taken from their custody be returned.

“Before we knew what was happening, they started shooting and we all took to our heels.

“One Emeka, who was driving along the route, was hit by a stray bullet. They attempted to burn down the station when the police fired and killed one of them.

“Nobody could sleep in this area that day because the OPC members threatened to bring down the whole place. Many residents fled.”

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident, saying report of the illegal arrest was received at the command’s control room from where policemen at Tolu Division were contacted.

She said that the policeman that fired the shot that killed the OPC member had been detained, and that the matter was being investigated to ascertain whether it was right to have fired the shot.

MAHMUD ALIYU SHINKAFI

A former Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi on Saturday in Abuja revealed that the recent spate of killings by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Benue, Nasarawa and other states in the northern parts of the country, are acts of “terrorism in disguise”.

He, therefore, recommended that “they should be treated as terrorists and dealt with decisively on the spot”.

The former governor, who is now Chairman, Board of National Coalition for Jonathan and Sambo Presidency, made this known at the inauguration of the 36 states chairmen of the coalition.

He said, “Reports from our intelligence and security unit confirms that those so called herdsmen are actually terrorists in disguise”.

Shedding more light on how he arrived at this weighty conclusion, Shinkafi, who was represented at the occasion by Baba Usman, said: “As a former executive governor, as a northerner, I can tell Nigerians and authoritatively so, that the herdsmen that we know are usually not more than two or three, tending to their cows with a long stick as their weapon.

“Today, we are faced with the so-called Fulani herdsmen numbering from 5 to 30 at a time, armed with sophisticated weapons. The coalition hereby recommends that anytime the so-called herdsmen are more than two or three in number, the Joint Military Task Force should arrest them, search them and if guns or matchets are found on them, they should be treated as terrorists and dealt with decisively on the spot. We have enough blood-shed and we want an end to it now”.

He also called on the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party to waive primary election for President Goodluck Jonathan as soon as he declares his second term ambition, justifying his position on the need to follow the practice in the United States of America, from where Nigeria adopted the presidential system of government.

“In the United States of America where Nigeria borrowed the presidential system from, a sitting President does not go through any primaries for a second term. In fairness to President Jonathan and in line with the tenets of the presidential system of government, we hereby demand that the greatest and biggest political party, the PDP waive primary elections for Jonathan”, Shinkafi added.

He also tasked delegates to the ongoing National Conference to see the opportunity as a call to national duty and justice to issues that require urgent attention.

Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State yesterday took a swipe at President Goodluck Jonathan, saying his approach to issues showed clearly a lack of humility.

He was reacting to comments made by the president during the North-East zonal rally of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Saturday.

President Jonathan had in his remarks at the rally advised governors in the states ravaged by Boko Haram insurgency to stop blaming the Federal Government of bad leadership and take some responsibility as they had failed to provide leadership for their people.

He was quoted as saying: “It is shameful for a governor who has stayed in power in his state for up to six years or more, to come to me and talk about bad leadership when you have youth in your state, more than half of whom have not attended primary school and you are doing nothing about it.

“State Governors should be ashamed of themselves when our children do not go to primary and secondary schools and they decide to carry arms”.

But Nyako in a response which was made public by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Ahmad Sajo, Nyako said it was unfortunate that the president has chosen once again, to blame everybody but himself, things going wrong with his government.

He said Jonathan’s recourse to passing the buck to the governors on the state of security in the region is not a sign of good leadership.

He said, “We also wish to draw the attention of the President to the fact that over 800 classroom blocks were destroyed in Borno state.

“Over 2000 classroom blocks were destroyed in Yobe State including those belonging to the Federal Government. Recently some classrooms were destroyed in Adamawa State as well.

“Several Schools were damaged and closed down in the affected states including Federal Government Colleges even though the President said his government has no responsibility for Secondary Education.

“The President’s persistent refusal to visit the affected states could be interpreted to mean an abdication of his constitutional responsibility to cater for the welfare and safety of the people of the zone. If he could go to Bauchi on a political jamboree, why not visit Borno and Yobe as part of his constitutional responsibility?”

The governor noted that if there is any proof of bad leadership in governance, it would be found in the way and manner the president executes his priorities and the kind of statements he and his spokespersons make.

Governors, he argued, are not and cannot be held responsible for security challenges since they have no control over any of the nation’s security apparatus.

“The President is the Commander-in-Chief with powers over the Armed Forces, Police and other security agencies. On the issue of education, the President is either being misled or is totally ignorant”, he said.

Nyako equally explained that, the name Boko Haram was a creation of the media in response to University graduates destroying their certificates in the very city of Bauchi where he made the latest statement. So the insurgency has nothing to do with education.

The Adamawa State governor also challenged President Jonathan to tell the world what his administration has done to improve the lot of the state since he assumed office.

Speaking on some of his achievements, Nyako noted that his administration (re) constructed all the Federal Roads in Adamawa State State, built the Nigerian Law School, built structures for the Army, Police and other security Agencies including the Prison Headquarters. These, he pointed out, are all responsibilities of the Federal Government.

He also urged Jonathan to cross-check the records of Adamawa State at the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, since 2010 to see the level of commitment the Nyako administration has paid to education.

In his own reaction, the governor of Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shettima said he does not want to join issues with the President.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Malam Isa Gusau, Shettima explained that Jonathan must have been misquoted because he has an understanding of what the issues are.

He said, “If you will recall, the Minister of Special Duties who met some of the Boko Haram members, announced that he conferred with first class graduates among adherents of Boko Haram.

“There are many who dropped out of school to join the Boko Haram, there were graduates among them who tore their certificates.

“So, it is not about education per se. We believe that the President understands the issues and must have been misquoted in this case”.

Another governor of one of the states in the North-East, Yobe State, which has been plagued by Boko Haram insurgency, Alhaji Ibrahim Geidam, could not be reached for comments.
