Former Director-General of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Retired Maj.-Gen. Solomon Omojokun, has passed on at the age of 79.







Family spokesperson, Mrs Funmi Obilana, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure, yesterday.



Obilana said Omojokun died after a brief illness in his home town at Ilara Mokin in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.



He added that, “Omojokun read Mathematics and Physics at University College (now University of Ibadan) in 1958 and taught as science teacher in Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure before he was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1963.



“He served at various capacities as Commandant of Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, Oshodi in 1970; Director-General, NYSC in 1975 until 1979 and was a Commandant of Nigerian Army Education Corps from 1979 to 1984.



“He was the Federal Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity during Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s regime, after which, he retired in 1985.’’



Obilana added that the deceased was a Nigerian Ambassador to Cuba and Mexico between 1987 to 1991.



The spokesperson said the deceased is survived by a widow and children, adding that funeral arrangements would be announced by the family soon.
