Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Charles Ajuyah (SAN), yesterday said that the state government would not give up its bid to reclaim ownership of the $15 million that was allegedly offered to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in 2007 by convicted former governor, Chief James Ibori.
Fielding questions from newsmen when he took his turn to present the mid-term report of his ministry, Ajuyah said that the state government was not deterred by last week’s judgment by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which refused to grant ownership of the money to the state government.
He said that the state government was studying the judgment and looking at all the variables on whether to file an appeal or not.
He said: “The judgment has been given, and we will take appropriate steps within the time frame of three months. We are looking at the variables.”
66 convicted for kidnapping/armed robbery
The Attorney-General gave a breakdown of criminal cases in various high courts from 2007 to October 2013, which, according to him, showed that 2,386 criminal cases were initiated during the period, 238 convictions were secured, 472 struck out and 110 cases discharged.
“It will interest you to know that we have secured 148 convictions of which 66 were connected with kidnapping and armed robbery. What this signifies is that arrested suspects are not unnecessarily incarcerated for long periods without trial. Once we have evidence, we go all out to prosecute,” he said.
