Amanda Scarpinati, who suffered severe burns as an infant finally got a chance to thank the hospital nurse who cared for her, thanks to a social media posting that revealed the identity of the nurse in 38-year-old photos.

38-year-old Scarpinati from Athens, says she has always treasured photos of her as a baby in a young nurse's arms. The pictures were published in Albany Medical Center's 1977 annual report without names.

The black-and-white photos shot by photographer Carl Howard have a beatific, "Madonna and Child" quality. "Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented. I'd look at those pictures and talk to her, even though I didn't know who she was. I took comfort looking at this woman who seemed so sincere caring for me."

She tried to find out the nurse's name 20 years ago without success. When she posted the photos on Facebook this month at the urging of a friend, she doubted her plea to help put a name to the nurse's face would be successful. Within 12 hours, it had gone viral with 5,000 shares across the country," said Scarpinati, who works as a human resources manager.

"It was on the local TV news the next morning. I was blown away." Angela Leary, a former nurse at Albany Medical Center, sent Scarpinati a message saying the nurse in the photo is Susan Berger, who had moved to the Syracuse area years ago. "She was as sweet and caring as she looks in this picture," Leary wrote.

Respite appears to be coming the way of residence of Ago palace way in Lagos as the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has vowed to complete the ongoing repairs of the road that has been in a deplorable state for so many years.

In a statement released by the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure today September 30th, the state government said the final repairs along Fedrick Fasheun junction to Amuwo-Odofin Bridge and other road projects across the State will receive adequate and prompt attention by his government.

Ambode said efforts are on to ensure that contractors on all its road projects return to work and deliver high quality roads within reasonable timeframe. It explained that in view of the link between Isolo axis and the Apapa-Oshodi and Lagos Badagry Expressway, the Ago Palace way was segmented into phases to ensure ease of financing and delivery.

“Phase 1 of the road is 1.7km long road. It spans between Durban junction and the bridge. Phase 11 is the expansion of the 700m long bridge, while Phase 111 is 1.65km long road that spans between Okota Rd Junction and Fredric Fasehun junction. The three phase have been completed and in use. The phase IV is a 3.05km long road. Currently the project has attained 45% completion with significant works done on all the drainage/culvert and New Jersey barrier works. Also work is at advance stage on relocation of services, soil stabilization, and provision of crush stone before laying of 80mm interlocking paving stone on a segment of the road". The state government noted that erosion and flooding within the carriageway has subsided with the completion of drainage works on both sides of the 3.05 km road, adding that the inclement weather had reduced the pace of activities on the road.

While assuring that pace of work will soon pick up, the statement stressed that optional routes have been provided and made motorable by the contractor. They include Lamidi Ariyo, Folarin Fatunisi, Femi Kila, Ostra Lane, Zoostra Lane, Hakeem Dosunmu, Prince Joseph Adebayo, Awka Etiti, Okiki and Jemtok Street.

First or business class travel is normally enjoyed by chief executives, A-list actors or rock stars, but it has actually never been more attainable for the average traveller.
While it may be a rare feat, flyers can bag a free upgrade and enjoy perks such as steak or lobster dinners, a seat that converts into a fully flat bed, and pre-flight Champagne.
From joining a rewards scheme to simply asking for one, these are the best ways holidaymakers can improve their chances of securing a first class seat without paying for it.
Travellers may find that the best way to get a free upgrade is to join an airline's frequent flyer programme
Travellers may find that the best way to get a free upgrade is to join an airline’s frequent flyer programme
Join a frequent flyer scheme
This is the loyal traveller’s best shot at getting their bottom in one of the best seats on their flight.
Those who regularly fly with the same airline should join its rewards scheme and earn miles on every flight booked or goods or services purchased from the carrier’s partners, including hotels, restaurants and car hire firms.

Once they accumulate, miles or points can be used towards a first or business class seat, or membership alone can lead to a better seat as airlines tend to upgrade their most loyal customers first when the economy cabin is oversold.
Long-haul flights offer the best perks, and some programmes or credit cards offer incentives for new customers.
Scott Keyes, a 28-year-old writer, recently travelled 20,000 miles on 21 flights – in first class and mostly for free – after racking up more than 135,000 frequent flyer miles on 25 credit cards.
Fly solo
The odds of receiving an upgrade are greater for those who are travelling alone.
Airlines are more likely to upgrade a single traveller than a couple or a family of four.
A recent study by Skyscanner found that almost three quarters (72 per cent) of flight attendants are more inclined to offer a free upgrade to a passenger who is flying alone.
Celebrate a milestone
This may be the oldest trick in the book, and it may not offer the best results, but it doesn’t hurt to tell staff at the check-in desk or gate if the trip is in celebration of a special occasion.
A honeymoon seems to be a couple’s best chance at scoring an upgrade, as requests based on birthdays or anniversaries tend to fall on deaf ears.
Skyscanner’s survey of 700 cabin crew members revealed that 58 per cent would consider upgrading newlyweds who are jetting abroad for their honeymoon.

Dress for success
While it may not be the reason for an upgrade, dressing smart can improve one’s chances over passengers who are wearing T-shirts or torn jeans, if flight attendants are looking to move passengers from economy to a higher class.
Experts said travellers should dress ‘smart casual’ for their flight, as airlines want first and business class to look like a league above.
Be flexible
If a flight is oversold, airlines will reward passengers who volunteer to be ‘bumped’ to a different flight.
Incentives can include a free upgrade or vouchers for use towards a future flight.
According to TravelSupermarket, a pre-booked meal or pre-flight request could hinder a traveller’s chances of being upgraded, as it may be considered a hassle to move them.

Just ask for one
This is a long shot and it may annoy staff at the check-in desk or gate, but some travellers have found success with this approach.
Anyone who asks for an upgrade, however, should be polite and should not demand one.
Sometimes it just pays to be polite, as flight attendants have told tales of offering upgrades to passengers who smiled and were courteous while boarding.
Skyscanner’s survey of passengers revealed that they are willing to say almost anything to get a better seat.
Three quarters told the travel website they would tell a lie if it improved their chances, while 14 per cent said they would pretend to be newlyweds.
Last year, a poll by MoneySavingExpert.com revealed one in five passengers had received a free upgrade in the previous two years.
Of those, only 1.4 per cent said they were successful after asking or attempting to talk staff into it.
Avoid busy times
Holidaymakers may have better odds when regular business travellers aren’t flying.
That means booking flights at mid-day, late at night or at the weekend, or on Bank Holidays, said Skyscanner.
At the very least, travellers will have a better shot at choosing their preferred seat in economy.
Break a leg
Alerting cabin crew to injuries or ailments may lead to a better seat.
A Skyscanner survey of airline staff found that a passenger with a broken limb was more likely to get a free upgrade, given the need for additional legroom.
The study also found that nearly two-thirds (61 per cent) of cabin crew have given someone a free upgrade, and it was usually single men who were bagging the premium seats.

Remember Nelson Oamen, the 34-year-old drug addict who allegedly stabbed his 74 year old Dad, Ehiremen Oamen, to death and took his heart on Sept. 21st in Ipaja, Lagos?
Well, he turned himself in to the police at the Ipaja Police Division on Thursday and has since been reportedly transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, for further investigation.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Nelson walked into the police station to report himself on Thursday and allegedly confessed to the crime.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, confirmed the arrest.
He said:

“The man has been arrested. He actually handed over himself to the police at Ipaja, who took him to the SCID, Yaba. He has also confessed to the crime.”

A brazen prisoner walked out of a notorious open prison to enjoy an overnight stay at a luxury hotel with his wife  and even tricked management into giving him the executive room for free.

Douglas Ward, 26, dodged at least four roll calls at North Sea Camp Prison while he was living it up in the Grade II-listed boutique hotel with wife Eileen, 27, over the August bank holiday weekend.

A court heard the inmate – who was serving more than five years for firearms offences at the time – was only rumbled when suspicious hotel staff discovered his Facebook page listed his status as a ‘serving prisoner’.

By then, Ward had uploaded photographs of him and his wife drinking the contents of the mini-bar in their room at 15-bedroom Cley Hall Hotel, a Georgian property in the centre of Spalding, Lincolnshire.
The pictures prompted a friend to ask Ward if he had been released from jail, only for the prisoner to brag that he was just ‘out for the day’.

The court heard Ward’s wife checked in to the hotel using the name Ellen Thompson – a false first name with her maiden surname. She was described by the hotel manager as having an ‘orange complexion as if she used fake tan and what he took to be very large breast implants’

The couple persuaded management at the hotel to waive the £110 room rate after claiming Ward had to go to hospital when an antique chair collapsed as he sat at a desk, injuring his ankle.

Mrs Ward then negotiated a second free night after claiming her husband could not drive them back to their home town of Darlington, County Durham, because his ankle was too swollen.

But by then, staff had become suspicious of the couple after noticing Ward wearing ‘a simple crepe bandage on his leg that he thought was not of the type that would be given out by a hospital’.

‘The manager was a bit suspicious. He was concerned there may be some adverse comments on Facebook and made some inquiries.

‘He discovered some photographs had been uploaded on Facebook which showed the two of them consuming the contents of the mini-bar and noticed that the defendant’s Facebook profile showed he was living at HMP Strangeways.’

North Sea Camp Prison.Open prisons provide the most effective means for prisoners ending their sentences to be tested in the community before release

Ward was first sent to Strangeways after being jailed for 64 months at Bolton Crown Court in October 2011. He had been found in possession of firearms during a pre-arranged fight between travelling families in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

Ward, who’s Facebook page has since been deleted, was handed a concurrent 15-month sentence on Monday for absconding, alongside a £900 Criminal Courts Charge and a £100 victim surcharge.
