March 2015

Official statement by president Jonathan after the announcement of the results of presidential election.

Fellow Nigerians,

I thank you all for turning out en-masse for the March 28 General Elections. I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word. I have also expanded the space for Nigerians to participate in the democratic process. That is one legacy I will like to see endure.

Although some people have expressed mixed feelings about the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), I urge those who may feel aggrieved to follow due process based on our constitution and our electoral laws, in seeking redress.

As I have always affirmed, nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else.

I congratulate all Nigerians for successfully going through the process of the March 28th General Elections with the commendable enthusiasm and commitment that was demonstrated nationwide.

I also commend the Security Services for their role in ensuring that the elections were mostly peaceful and violence-free.

To my colleagues in the PDP, I thank you for your support. Today, the PDP should be celebrating rather than mourning. We have established a legacy of democratic freedom, transparency, economic growth and free and fair elections.

For the past 16 years, we have steered the country away from ethnic and regional politics. We created a Pan-Nigerian political party and brought home to our people the realities of economic development and social transformation.

Through patriotism and diligence, we have built the biggest and most patriotic party in Nigerian history. We must stand together as a party and look to the future with renewed optimism.

I thank all Nigerians once again for the great opportunity I was given to lead this country and assure you that I will continue to do my best at the helm of national affairs until the end of my tenure.

I have conveyed my personal best wishes to General Muhammadu Buhari.

May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

I thank you all.

Nigeria’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday evening sent his congratulatory message to the country’s President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, saying the latter’s victory at the polls is the best chapter of the nation’s history.

Abubakar, who contested with Buhari for the ticket of the party in December 2014 under the All Progressives Congress, APC, said it was great to know that Buhari had led the party o victory just about two years after its formation.

“The great Nnamdi Azikiwe once wrote that ‘history will continue to vindicate the just’. Your victory in the polls, with votes from across the length and breadth of our country, bears witness to the acceptance of not just our party, the APC, but also your ideology of justice, fair play and zero tolerance for corruption as the bedrock for national rebirth,” Atiku Abubakar said.

The former Vice President also thanked every Nigerian who voted for the APC in the election.

“Your votes have not just elected the first opposition party into federal power, but has also set a precedent which will have positive implications for democracy across Africa.

“Dear GMB, the journey has just begun. Millions of Nigerians have put their trust in you, because they were not satisfied with the status quo. You represent the hope of a new generation of Nigerians, and you cannot afford to fail them.

“Our party has made a promise of change to our young people, to secure and rebuild our country, create jobs and opportunity, and improve citizens’ welfare. We will stand behind you to ensure we keep those promises, just like we did during these elections.

“Our country needs a new direction. We have voted for you, and our party won the election, but when you assume our highest office, you must become the president of not just the APC, but all of Nigeria, including the people who did not vote for you. We look up to you to heal the fractures of our country, and truly unite this country like never before.

“To President Jonathan, I want to specially thank you for conducting a historic election. Your party may have lost the elections, but you have won the admiration of the world by not interfering with the wishes of Nigerians. History will be kind to you.

“It is my sincere hope that we will all come together as one country, to build the Nigeria of our dreams,” the statement said.

Former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on Tuesday said President Goodluck Jonathan lost the presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC, because Jonathan failed to meet the yearnings and aaspiration of Nigeria’s citizens.

In a congratulatory message titled: “Buhari deserves this victory” and which he personally signed, Babangida said the country had witnessed a downward trend and wanted a leader who would salvage it.

He said Nigerian politicians had a lot of lessons to learn from the election and Buhari’s victory saying one of this was that an incumbent could be defeated if he did not do well as President.

Apart from this, he said there was a lesson to learn from Buhari’s perseverance after he had lost three previous elections.

“I have just finished watching the proceedings of the declaration of results of the March 28, 2015 elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission and the emergence of my friend, professional colleague and former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari as the President-elect.

“Let me, therefore, formally congratulate General Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives’ Congress for this well-deserved victory.

“This victory to me conveys two significant statements on our political history and evolution. First; that incumbents can be defeated in any democratic process if the people’s aspirations are not fulfilled. Second, that there is good reward for perseverance and hard work. General Buhari has been very consistent in pursuing his political aspiration.

In fact, he reminds me of President Abraham Lincoln of the American fame, who was very dogged in pursuing his political aspiration and enriched the contents of democracy in America. General Buhari lives true to his military calling by remaining very consistent, resilient and courageous right from 2003 till date. This enviable feat to me further enriches our democratic process and matures us into the top echelon of nations where democracy has taken firm root. That President Jonathan has indeed conceded defeat and congratulated the President-elect is also cheering news.

“Let me also congratulate other presidential candidates of the other political parties, especially Mr. President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for putting up a good fight in the elections. I wish to also commend the Independent National Electoral Commission, for conducting such a free, fair and transparent election despite all the initial hitches and challenges. The beauty of democracy is that it is an on-going process that gives room for improvement, provides opportunity to make amends, and affords the people the opportunity to make a statement with their ballots during elections.

“With this election and its outcome thus far, Nigeria has once again recorded another milestone in her march through the enviable ladder of democracy. Our leadership role in Africa will further be enhanced by the way and manner we manage the gains of this process. But I trust that the President-elect will live up to the expectations of many Nigerians that crave for change; and lift Nigeria to greater heights.

I wish to implore the President-elect to reach out to other contestants in the spirit of one Nigeria, as he settles down for the task of leading this nation in the next four years. Your victory has no doubt broken the barriers of ethnicity and religious inclinations; two sensitive issues that undeservedly dominated the campaigns. I am confident that this victory will usher in a new perspective in our political history and development.

“On behalf of my family, accept from me, our hearty congratulations,” the statement read.

Nigerians have commended President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding and congratulating Gen Muhammadu Buhari as winner of Saturday’s Presidential Election.

In Enugu, the residents commended the president for his display of sportsmanship following the victory of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Some of the people, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday said Jonathan had exhibited great statesmanship.

The South-East Coordinator of APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Osita Okechukwu, said the victory which was for Nigerians was a display of democracy.

“We congratulate Nigerians for the peaceful elections. We also congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan for his display of sportsmanship by congratulating Gen. Buhari.

“The core ingredient of election is a reflection of the performance of the incumbent and the character of the challenger.

“This victory shows that votes of the people count in elections,’’ Okechukwu said.

According to him, Gen. Buhari has promised to run a transparent government, war against corruption and provide maximum security to citizens of the country and he will deliver.

The South-East Zonal Director of the Civil Liberties Organisation, Mr Olu Omotayo, said it was the first time in the history of the country that an opposition party was winning elections at the centre.

Omotayo, who also congratulated Jonathan, said the victory of an opposition party was a reflection of change in the democratic parlance of the country.

He urged the president-elect to live up to the expectations of the people in order to justify the confidence reposed on him.

A political analyst, Mr Uche Ezechukwu, said the gesture of Jonathan by conceding defeat in defiance of reported pressures from close advisers was `historic’.

“This is the first time in the history of the country for an incumbent president to concede defeat. It might not be easy for ordinary minds to grasp.

“But the statesmanship of GEJ by conceding defeat in defiance of reported pressures from many of his close advisers has saved Nigeria.

“He is definitely a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. I thank God for him,’’ Ezechukwu said.

The Executive Director, Women in Peace and Leadership Network, Mrs Joy Onyeso, congratulated Buhari for his victory.

Onyeso appealed to the incoming president to give the women a priority in his administration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that APC members in Enugu State led by the governorship candidate of the party in the state, Mr Okey Ezea staged a victory party at the Gen. Buhari’s campaign Organisation in Enugu.

NAN however, reports that the state is generally calm and peaceful.

In Lagos, some prominent lawyers in Lagos have praised Jonathan for calling Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on phone to concede defeat to him.

The lawyers told NAN said Jonathan displayed an uncommon statesmanship which had further deepened democracy in Nigeria.

The Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos branch, Mr Alex Mouka, said the defeat of the incumbent president by the opposition was a landmark in Nigeria’s electoral history.

“I must congratulate the incumbent president for conceding and calling to congratulate the president-elect.

“That is a very good omen and he displayed a statesmanlike manner,’’ Mouka said.

He, however, noted that there were still some issues which needed to be addressed for the country to achieve a better electoral process.

The NBA chairman also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to investigate the complaints presented to it by the political parties to ensure a more credible electoral process.

Also, Mr Onyekachi Ubani, a former NBA Chairman in Ikeja, commended Nigerians for their resilience and commitment toward the entrenchment of true democracy in the country.

“We must appreciate Jonathan for being the one that laid this foundation of the revolution that has even now swept him out of office.

“But the good thing is that he will be remembered for laying this foundation for this revolution that has just taken place.

“For him to concede defeat and congratulate the president-elect means that he is on the verge of putting his name down in gold.

“This will become a reality if the president hands over on May 29 willingly to Buhari without any chaos or violence.

“That will be very fantastic and he will never be forgotten. His name will be etched in gold and he will become a statesman for this nation,” Ubani said.

Ubani further said that the outcome of the election had shown that power was being restored to the people through the ballot, adding that it was no longer business as usual for the politicians.

On his part, a law teacher, Mr Gbenga Ojo, commended the international community for prevailing on Nigeria’s leaders to accept the outcome of the election.

Ojo, who is of the Faculty of Law, Lagos State University, also commended the president for not plunging the country into chaos.

Every praise, every appreciation must go to the man they call Jonathan. He has displayed uncommon statesmanship far better than other leaders.

“No other president will accept going to his polling unit and the machine will fail to accredit him. But this man stood patiently and appealed to Nigerians to be calm.

“The man demonstrated first class statesmanship. To crown it all, he has accepted defeat without going to the tribunal. It is good for our democracy and it is good for him,’’ Ojo said.

Ojo, however, advised the president not to allow his party to prevail on him to go to court or issue statements that he would not accept the result.

According to him, there is substantial compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the irregularities are not enough to nullify the whole election.

He also urged INEC to perfect the use of the card readers, adding that the inability of the machine to read the fingerprints of the president was a huge embarrassment.

In Bauchi, APC senator-elect in Bauchi Southern, Alhaji Ali Wakili, has called on the president-elect to ensure that Nigeria remains united.

Wakili, who made the call in Bauchi, said that apart from fighting corruption, injustice, insecurity and unemployment, Buhari should ensure that Nigeria remained united.

“As an international figure, you must also stick to the wishes of the people who fought for a change and it came.

“Your victory is the will of the people and it is time for change and it is the will of the people, therefore, you must fight for the unity of the People,’’ Wakili said.

He commended the president-elect for the victory, and said that “you have a great task ahead of you.

“I also commend President Jonathan for the sportsmanship manner in which he had congratulated Buhari for his victory ahead of the announcement of the final results and declaration,’’ Wakili said.

The National Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Tuesday said Nigerians had made history through the ballot box.

Mohammed made the statement in Abuja at the APC secretariat while fielding questions from newsmen.

According to him, by voting into power someone not in government, Nigerians have reclaimed their power at the polls.

”I think it’s first of all victory to all Nigerians; we are all here on the verge of history, this is the first time in the political history of Nigeria that a government in power would lose an election via the ballot box.

”This also sends a strong message to the incoming government that the people have reclaimed their ballot.

”People have reclaimed their rights and they would punish any government who fails to do their expectations,” Mohammed said.

He said further that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s victory across the zones was due to the selflessness of the party leaders.

Mohammed added that the merger of various political parties was another reason for the victory.

”Buhari won across the zones, we thank our leaders who thought it fit to come to a merger.

”Before now, we were in ANPP, CPC and ACN but our leaders made that bold sacrifice, dropped their personal ambitions and agreed at a merger and gave us a broader platform.

”A platform that was national in outreach and for the first time in Nigeria, we had a truly pan-Nigerian political party,” he added.

The party’s spokesman pointed out that Buhari’s victory was made possible because of the issues that defined the election.

”The issues that defined Buhari’s win across the zones were corruption, ineptitude, bad economy and insecurity and in him they (electorate) found these qualities,’’ he said.

Also, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Aminu Tambuwal, said, ”we are all full of thanksgiving to God about the happenings in the country.”

Speaking to Channels TV on the telephone on Tuesday, the monarch said the election had shown that the citizens of the country could come together to make national and global impact.

The monarch, a member of the National Reconciliation Committee, commended Jonathan for taking the initiative to concede victory and congratulated Buhari.

On Jonathan’s call to Buhari, he said, “Now that they (Nigerians) have spoken, I would like to commend Mr. President for magnanimously extending a hand of fellowship and statesmanship to the winner, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who I believe will also reciprocate the same.”

He said the action of the President showed that “we have come of age in our democracy”, saying, “I believe Nigerians will be the best for it.”

The congratulatory message was made available to our correspondent at Abeokuta on Tuesday following Buhari victory in the March 28 presidential election.

Obasanjo, who noted that so much harm had already been done to many national institutions, including the military, however, advised him to be magnanimous in victory.

He said, “With so much harm already done to many national institutions including the military, which proudly nurtured you and me, you will have a lot to do on institution reform – education, healthcare, economy, security, infrastructure, power, youth employment, agri-business, oil and gas, external affairs, cohesiveness of our nation and ridding our land of corruption.

“Your varied and wide experience will undoubtedly stand you in good stead.”

The former president said the country “is blessed with men and women of goodwill, character and virtue across the board that you can mobilise to join hands with you in the reform, repairs and re-direction that will be imperative to put Nigeria back on the fast lane of good governance, unity, cohesiveness, development and progress.”

Obasanjo noted that Buhari’s victory, after three previous unsuccessful attempts, must be a great lesson to himself and for all politicians, particularly in Nigeria.

He said, “For me, the totality of 2015 elections hold many lessons for our democracy and democratisation process, which are both maturing.

“On this occasion, the system has been unnecessarily overheated before and particularly during the campaigns when emphasis was more on trivialities and hate, divisive, undignifying and disrespectful statements and comments rather than on pressing issues requiring attention.

“I know that in victory, you will be magnanimous to start binding the wounds and bitterness occasioned by the campaign and the evil disciples.”

There was wild jubilation in Ibadan Tuesday as residents in Sabo fired crackers to celebrate the victory of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidates.

At the time they were jublilating, INEC was yet to announce the results from three states of Bornu, Delta and Sokoto.

The crowd in their hundreds stormed the streets chanting “sai Buhari”.

They carried some of the posters of the General and the Vice Presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

As a result, there was a traffic snarl in the area which extended to Mokola roundabout.

Also, other people commended the role played by the electoral umpire led by Prof. Attahiru Jega.

Mr. Oyebanji Oyewale, a welder, said, “it was a good result because this has never happened before. Prof. Jega made everything open to all to see.

The election that produced late president Umaru Yaradua was not as transparent as thisEven though they have not finished announcing the results, it is glaring now that the general has won. Go to Sabo now, everybody is happy because for the first time, the incumbent president was unseated through transparent electoral process”.

Mr. Luke Oriire, a research officer, said, ” APC is leading and the margin is okay. We demanded for something and we got it. We needed change and we got it.

In the same vein, the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State described electorate in the state as worthy Soldiers of Change who deserved to be celebrated for their contributions to the victory of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd).

The party recorded a total of 528,620 votes in favour of Gen. Buhari as against the 303,376 scored by the incumbent president and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who emerged the overall second placed contender at the poll.

The party through its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, expressed its satisfaction saying, “whatever victory the APC recorded at the polls was made possible by God and the patriotic electorate who defied all odds to cast their votes for all the candidates presented by our great party.

Voters in Oyo State have demonstrated their resolve to assist the cause of Change which the APC is championing.

“As a party with record of performance in the state, we are indeed grateful that voters found virtually all candidates worthy of their respective mandates and we can assure them that none of those elected from the state on the platform of the APC to make laws at the federal level would disappoint owing to the fact that they are all competent, committed and passionate to perform well.

“However, we further urge electorate in Oyo State not to rest on their oars by completing the task of nation building. The best way to this is by electing only the candidates of the APC at the next tranche of this year’s general elections. At the next polls, our party’s gubernatorial and 32 House of Assembly candidates would be standing for elections and we urge our people to entrust them with their respective mandates.

“The need for continuity of good governance in the state should be established on April 11, 2015 when Governor Abiola Ajimobi is re-elected for another term of four years as this would seal the assurance of complete restoration, reformation and repositioning of the pacesetter state.” Sadare said.

Both men spoke with Journalists at the national secretariat of APC amid excitement of an anticipated victory

He said: “We will be magnanimous in victory because the challenges are much. It is not only about celebration of victory, it is about seriousness of governance and we must show the different between us and the current government. If we say there was incompetence, we must show competence.

“If we say there was corruption, we must show that we will not be corrupt. If we say that people were denied of their basic right, we must protect their rights. If we say there was impunity, we must govern by the rule of law, and once we show that Nigerians will see the different between us and the current government.”

When asked to explain what the victory meant to him, Ameachi said: “Quiet a lot. As the Director-General of the campaign, it is good to me.

I will begin to tell my children that for the first time in the history of Nigeria, the opposition party was able to root out the government in power and the party in power by presenting a different picture of what life looks like for giving the people the courage to confront the current government and confront what was going on.

“Confront corruption, confront the reality of the fact that Nigerians are hungry, that they don’t go to market as Nigerians do, they have the kind of fund and can eat the kind of food they want and Nigerians are hungry, to let Nigerians know that Boko Haram was not about religion alone but there was poverty and hunger and we have to deal with education and the issue of unemployment in the North and also in the south, and to also make people realise that religion is not an issue in Nigeria.”

Also speaking, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said “Buhari’s strong personality, character and integrity, his anti-corruption stance for which he has been known for so many years now, helped to make this victory easier for us.

“We would have lost woefully. Buhari made our victory very easy. He is a major factor in the land mark victory. It has never happened that an incumbent is defeated in a national election”.

Three Igbo candidates have won elections into the House of Representatives in Lagos State. The successful candidates who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are Chief Oghene Egboh, Mrs. Rita Orji and Mr. Tony Nwoolu.

Egboh won the House of Representatives seat for Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area while Orji won in Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGA and Nwoolu won the Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency.

Egboh polled a total of 29,761 votes to defeat the incumbent Ganiyu Olukolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 20,616 votes.

All the Igbo winners won in areas heavily populated by the Igbo in Lagos State. They defeated candidates of the APC, which is the ruling party in the state.

The PDP candidate in Ojo Local Government, Tajudeen Obasa also won the House of Reps seat for the area while Tunji Soyinka, also of PDP won the House of Reps seat for Surulere Federal Constituency 2.

In Mushin Federal Constituency 2, Dauda Kako Aare of the Accord Party also defeated the APC candidate, Yemi Alli, to clinch a ticket to the House of Representatives.

The victory of the Igbo candidates in Lagos State, according to some observers, is not a surprise as Igbo candidates have in the past won national elections in Lagos State. They cited the era of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, NCNC, led by the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, when Igbo residing in Lagos won elections into the regional and central legislatures.

Meanwhile, Chief Egboh on Tuesday expressed his desire to attract infrastructure development to the state.

Egboh made the promise in an interview on Tuesday.

“In this particular constituency the biggest problem we have is the decay of our infrastructure. There is no water, sewage system is bad, and there are no playing grounds,” he claimed.

Egboh promised to lobby ministers in charge of the ministries responsible for such facilities for an improved infrastructure in his constituency.

“My success as member of House of Representatives-elect was very significant being a non-indigene to have won the seat for the first time in Amuwo Odofin, Federal Constituency.

“Again this is the first time the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency,” he said.

Egboh, however, linked his success to hard work, focus and the experience of being a politician having served two terms as councillor, both in Amuwo Odofin and Ojo Local Government Areas.

“The senior legislators will see the quality in me and my constituency will feel the impact,” he declared.

Egboh gave glory to God and thanked the people of Amuwo Odofin whom, he said, had confidence and trust in him.

The House of Reps-elect who hails from Delta said his house-to-house campaign had indeed paid him, saying he had been working for the election in the past two years.

Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, refused to cancel the Presidential election results from Rivers State despite the outrage that greeted the widespread irregularities.

Speaking Tuesday in Abuja before the result was announced, Jega attributed the delay in the announcement to a protest the INEC received from the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Sunday morning.

In it, the APC alleged among other irregularities that election did not hold and results were falsified.

He stated that the commission dispatched to Rivers a three-man fact finding committee including the election coordinator in the state.

According to him, the team found out that election actually took place and there was no fact to establish the claim that election results were substituted.

He said the INEC therefore decided that the allegations were not substantiated and that the irregularities in Rivers were similar to what happened in some other states and therefore not enough to cancel the election and reschedule it.

“We do not believe the allegations are substantial to cancel and reschedule the election in Rivers. We have decided to announce the result,” Jega declared.

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday urged the people of the state not to entertain any fear as all parts of the state were under its surveillance. The Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, advised the residents to go about their normal businesses peacefully without panic.

Nwosu made the call in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. He was reacting to reports that the residents were apprehensive of what the outcome of Saturday’s elections may cause in view of declining presence of police in some areas of the state.

“We have deployed our personnel to those areas that we anticipated chaos, and now that we have finished the election, the deployment will definitely will change. “There is nowhere in the world where deployment remains constant, we keep on reviewing for the better. “So, people should not entertain any fears. We cover every part of Lagos through surveillance and patrol,” the PPRO

As the collation of the March 28 Presidential election progresses at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, residents of Kogi State are excited over the lead established by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), in the poll.

Despite perceived tensions in many quarters, the residents were seen going about their daily activities in a peaceful manner with a keen interest in the outcome of the collation.

Many government offices were opened with skeletal activities going on as the civil servants are either buried in the pages of newspapers or listening to their radio sets.

Our correspondent, who spoke to residents in Lokoja, the state capital, and Okene, the headquarters of the Kogi Central Senatorial District, observed that many residents were either following the event on their radio sets in cars, or putting on generators to monitor it on the television.

In Okene, a resident, Aisha Baba, who watched the event on the TV, said she was happy with the results collated so far, expressing the hope that the retired General would win the race.

“We all voted for Buhari in Okene and we believe that he will win despite the fraud in Rivers,” she said.

At a newsstand in Lokoja, Muhammed Adamu, a local barber, told our correspondent that the “antics” of the Peoples Democratic Party would fail.

“We will not be frustrated to fight or protest because we believe that our choice will emerge at the end of the day. They are expecting that we will run riot when they declare the Rivers State results; we are wiser now. They won’t have their way. It will all end in peace,” Adamu, who clutched his radio tightly as Godsday Orubebe’s voice rang out loudly, said.

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has received disturbing reports of the security details of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, being withdrawn in the last few minutes at the venue of the announcement of the collated results of the Presidential elections.

Our reports also include a fear that the Chairman of the Commission may be abducted at this venue.

Situation Room is calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to take immediate steps to guarantee the security and safety of the Chairman of INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega, all of the National Commissioners and staff of the Commission currently carrying out the national duty of announcing results of the elections.

We call on all Nigerians to be calm and peaceful as Professor Jega has demonstrated in his conduct of proceedings this morning.

Peoples Democratic Party,PDP,has protested the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission,INEC,to investigate the petition of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC,against last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in Rivers State.

The party particularly accused the commission’s chairman,Prof. Attahiru Jega of not only being bias but also partial and tribalistic.

Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs,Elder Godsday Orubebe and Col.Bello Fadile, who represented the party at the Presidential Election Results Collation Centre,at the International Conference Centre,ICC,Abuja, accused the INEC boss of secretly working for the APC.

Elder Orubebe, who led the protest, wondered why the INEC chairman constituted an investigative panel and sent same to Rivers State to look into the petition from the APC,while it failed to act in like manner on its petition against elections in seven states of the North.

The PDP representatives, whose open protest temporarily halted proceedings at the collation centre, said the party had lost confidence in both Jega and his INEC,and demanded expeditious treatment of its petition against the elections in some states of the North.

Some of the states, according to the party, are Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Bauchi.

Our governments welcome the largely peaceful vote on March 28. The Nigerian people have shown a commendable determination to register their vote and choose their leaders.

So far, we have seen no evidence of systemic manipulation of the process. But there are disturbing indications that the collation process—where the votes are finally counted—may be subject to deliberate political interference. This would contravene the letter and spirit of the Abuja Accord, to which both major parties committed themselves.

The Governments of the United States and the United Kingdom would be very concerned by any attempts to undermine the independence of the Electoral Commission (INEC), or its Chairman, Prof. Jega; or in any way distort the expressed will of the Nigerian people.

A commercial motorcyclist, Raphael (surname withheld), yesterday, allegedly beat his wife, Bose, to a pulp over disagreement on the outcome of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

A source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the couple, who live in Igangu area of Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government area of Kwara State are members of different political parties.

According to reports, the result of the elections, which was widely believed to favour a particular party in the area, was said to have created frosty relationship between the husband and wife.

Trouble started between the couple when Bose, in the course of celebrating her party’s victory in the House of Representatives and the Senatorial elections in the area, made unpleasant gestures toward Abiodun.

This was said to have angered Abiodun, who immediately pounced on Bose and inflicted injuries on her.

It took the intervention of neighbours and some commercial motorcyclists in the area to save the situation from degenerating further.

An eyewitness, Sikiru Adewale, a commercial motorcyclist, told NAN that Abiodun accused his wife of not being sympathetic to the failure of his party.

Adewale said Abiodun was not happy with Bose’s attitude because she was always the major beneficiary of his party’s numerous largesse to the family.

“I think the husband was not happy with the way his wife reacted to the outcome of the election results in the area, even when she has benefited immensely from her husband’s party’s largesse.’’ (NAN)

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kano State chapter, has called for the cancellation of results of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.

This was contained in a petition signed by the party’s Secretary, Alhaji Auwalu Danzabuwa, and made available to newsmen in Kano on Monday.

“The PDP hereby protest the way, manner and procedure adopted by your commission in the conduct of the above exercise.

“The party hereby demand the cancellation of the election in its totality in Kano State,” the petition said.

The party said that the number of votes in many of the polling units exceeded the number of accredited voters as captured in the card reader and manual accreditation.

“We hereby put forward the following as examples, Gurjiya Cikin Gari Polling Unit (006), Dagumawa Cikin Gari Polling Unit (007) and Dagumawa Bayan Sakateriya (004).”

The petition also alleged that many voters were deliberately denied the right to vote by APC supporters.

It alleged that the commission in some areas did not provide adequate number of ballot papers needed at the polling units and other voting materials at Dawakin Tofa Local Government.

According to the petition, Dawakin Tofa and Rimin Gado local governments received 40,000 and 15, 000 ballot papers respectively.

It said that the figure was short of the number needed to conduct free and fair election in the areas.

“In addition, a car Renault model belonging to one Alhaji Bilya of Bachirawa Quarters was loaded with APC thump printed ballot papers; the case was reported to Bachirawa Police Division.

“Violent conduct by APC members chased out eligible voters from polling units and stuffing of ballot papers, thump printed by APC agents while INEC officials were made to endorse same under duress,” the petition alleged.

Five of the nine serving governors seeking to go to the Senate have scaled the hurdle defeating their closest rivals to clinch the seats in the respective districts.

Four others who equally ran could not achieve their ambition as they were defeated in the race.

Those that made it to the Senate are Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano, Aliyu Magatakrada Wamakko of Sokoto, Jonah Jang of Plateau, Godswill Akapbio of Akwa Ibom and Theodore Orji of Abia State.

Those that crashed out are Mallam Isa Yuguda of Bauchi, Muazu Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Saidu Dakingari of Kebbi and Gabriel Suswam of Benue.

The number of governors that failed to make it is high considering the weight they pull in their states.

Most of those that were defeated lost to the clamour for change in some of the states while those that won have either the power of incumbency or the same factor of change going for them.

Others who have made it to the next Senate include former minister of aviation, Stella Oduah, former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Usman Bayero Nafada and former governors of Plateau and that of Gombe States, Joshua Dariye and Danjuma Goje.

About 11 governors had indicated interest in going to the Senate in their respective zones but some of them failed to clinch their party’s tickets.

They include Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta and Sullivan Chime of Enugu State.

Meanwhile, Senate President, David Mark will be returning to the upper chamber for the fifth time to represent Benue South Senatorial district.

Mark defeated APC candidate Daniel Onjeh..

In Kano, four-time Senator Bello Hayyatu Gwarzo (Kano North Senatorial District) couldn’t make it to the red chamber for the fifth time. He was defeated by APC’s Barau Jibril, a former House of Representatives.

In Bauchi, Deputy Senate Leader Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lost his bid to return to the Senate as he was defeated by Isah Hamma Misau of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

In Kwara State, former Governor Bukola Saraki was re-elected for Kwara Central, while Senator Shaaba Lafiagi was also reelected for Kwara North. A current member of the House of Reps member representing Ifelodun/Offa/Oyun Rafiu Ibrahim was elected as Senator for Kwara South.

The National Broadcasting Commission has indicted the African Independent Television and the National Television Authority for airing controversial sponsored documentary on the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the Director of Public Affairs at the NBC, Mr. Awwalu Salihu, also listed other television and radio stations that were indicted for various offences committed in the coverage of the 2015 general elections.

Although Salihu simply mentioned the offence of the NTA and AIT as contravening rules for airing sponsored materials, the two stations had been at the centre of controversy for airing documentaries on Buhari and a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

NTA was also indicted for contravening rules on sensibilities while AIT was also indicted for contravening 24-hour advert prohibition rules.

Other stations that were indicted for varied offences include Rima Radio, STV Lagos, NTA Lagos, NTA2 Channel 5, TVC Lagos, NTV, PRTV Jos, NTA Makurdi, Vision FM, Nigeria Info, OSBC TV, Freedom TV, Ilesa, BCOS TV, Liberty TV, Liberty Radio, Karama (FRCN) FM, Alheri FM, NTA Jos, Ombe Media Corp Radio FM, BSES Ekiti and DSTV (Ebony Live TV Channel).

Salihu said, “The contraventions include breaches of the rules on the broadcast of sponsored electoral campaign materials, which must conform to the standards of truth, decency and good taste, and requiring the sponsor to be clearly identified.

“Other breaches included the airing of campaign materials or programmes that promoted political parties or candidates within the 24-hour prohibition period, as well as unauthorised networking by a group of stations.”

The NBC spokesman said all the stations had either been queried or sanctioned according to the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

Also, the European Union Election Observation Mission Chief Observer, Santiago Fisas, said during the presentation of the mission’s preliminary statement in a press conference in Abuja that EU’s media monitoring team discovered that government-controlled broadcast media exhibited partisanship by giving advantage to the incumbent at federal or state level.

Fisas added, “The European Union Election Observation Mission commends the Nigerian people for their commitment to the overall peaceful and orderly elections this weekend-despite frustration and challenges caused by often late opening of polling sites, failing biometric voter verification, some regrettable violent incidents, and re-polling on Sunday.”

In a statement sent to one of our correspondents by the mission’s Press and Public Outreach Officer, Eberhard Laue, Fisas however said that some private media organisations were balanced and objective in their coverage of the elections.

The All Progressives Congress, Bayelsa State chapter, has rejected the declared results of the last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.

The party alleged on Monday that the results were filled with widespread irregularities.

According to the APC, the elections were heavily compromised and characterised by intimidation of voters and arrests of APC members and agents in most parts of the state.

The APC, in a statement by its chairman, Chief Tiwei Oruminighe, accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of colluding with the Peoples Democratic Party to massively rig the elections.

He said, “There are armed and security forces collusion with PDP to compromise the electoral process; late arrival of electoral materials, and deliberate refusal to use the card readers.”

“In almost all the eight local government councils, with the possible exception of Ogbia, electoral materials arrived at the earliest 3:00 pm on voting day.

“When the officials and materials arrived, they abandoned the card readers, even where there was no proof that they were bad. The INEC officials claimed to have received the following SMS from their headquarters: ‘My dear EOs, Pls you have been enjoined to use Manual Register for accreditation of voters. Be wise!’ Once this message was circulated, it set the stage for PDP to manipulate the process with the collusion of INEC and the security agents.

“Specifically, our party agents were intimidated and voters scared away by gunshots fired by the armed security forces. In Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, Hon. Tariprebo Moses Aketi, APC candidate for KOLGA Constituency 1, and his campaign manager, Imomoemi Odiowei, were arrested.

“In Nembe Local Government Area, Mini and Ikensi Wards, security agents using two new gunboats chased out APC agents, seized all the electoral materials and took them elsewhere.”

The party chairman claimed that in the same local government, results of four units in Oluasiri Ward 13 were hijacked by men in police uniform.

He alleged that in Southern Ijaw LG Ward 17, electoral materials were taken to the houses of PDP leaders and collated after agents of other political parties were chased away by security agents.

The All Progressives Congress has lost five House of Representatives seats to the Peoples Democratic Party and a seat to the Accord Party in Lagos.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that most of the reps lost in Igbo- dominated local government areas.

Sources in the APC said the love the people of the South-East have for President Goodluck Jonathan positively affected the PDP candidates, some of whom had not even been rigorously campaigning.

In Amuwo Odofin local government, which has a very high Igbo population, especially in areas like Kirikiri, Satellite Town and FESTAC, the PDP candidate, Oghene Egboh, who is from the Niger-Delta, defeated Mr. Ganiyu Olukolu of the APC.

In Ajeromi/Ifelodun, which is one of the most densely populated areas in Lagos State and is home to Ajegunle (another Igbo dominated area), the PDP candidate, Mrs. Rita Orji, who also hails from the South-East, defeated Taiwo Adenekan of the APC.

The story was the same in the Igbo-dominated Ojo LG, where the PDP candidate, Mr. Tajudeen Obasa, won the seat.

In Surulere federal constituency 2, which is home to Aguda and a few Igbo settlements, Mr. Tunji Soyinka of the PDP defeated Mr. Hakeem Bamgbala of the APC.

It was learnt that apart from the ‘Igbo’ factor, the incumbent rep, Mr. Aliyu Kazeem, had been in court with Bamgbala over the conduct of the primary.

It was learnt that the division within the party gave the PDP the opportunity to penetrate the community.

An APC leader in Surulere said, “We are still in shock. Haliyu Kazeem, who is the incumbent, lost the primary in December last year and refused to work with Bamgbala. He took Bamgbala to court and they are still slugging it out.

“If they had put things in order, we would not have lost. Bamgbala is a former chairman of Aguda Local Council Development Area and a good grass roots politician.”

In Mushin federal constituency 2, the APC candidate, Yemi Alli, lost to Dauda Kako-Aare of the Accord Party.

Kako-Aare, who is the incumbent, lost at the APC primary last December to Alli and defected to Accord.

In Oshodi/Isolo federal constituency 2, the incumbent, Mr. Akeem Munir, lost to Mr. Tony Nwoolu of the PDP.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari, polled 792,460 votes to emerge the winner in a closely contested race against President Goodluck Jonathan in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Mr. Jonathan, who is contesting under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, polled 632,327.

Out of the 20 local government areas in Lagos State, the APC won 15 while PDP won five.

Akin Orebiyi, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, urged any aggrieved party to approach the Election Petitions Tribunal which he said would be constituted soon.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ogun State has accused a Senator-elect, Prince Buruji Kashamu, of inducing voters during Saturday’s national assembly elections in Ogun East Senatorial District in which Buruji Kashamu emerged winner.

The deputy director of Senator Ibikunle Amosun Campaign Organisation, Bisi Adegbuyi, stated this during a press briefing in Abeokuta on Monday, claiming that it was “marred by gross irregularities, inducement and intimidation of voters, manipulation and falsification of the results.”

The party, however, vowed to contest the result at the tribunal, maintaining that Kashamu allegedly induced voters, manipulated and falsified results of the polls.

At the election, the APC’s candidate for the Ogun East Senatorial District, Dapo Abiodun, the party’s candidates for Remo and Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside federal constituencies, Olayinka Odufuwa and Sulaiman Olubiyi respectively lost in the election.

Adegbuyi, said the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, did not reflect the wishes of the people of Ogun East, describing the election as a mere charade.

He said the party has “incontrovertible evidence of the manipulations that took place and the roles played by certain individuals.”

According to him,”We therefore reject the results of the national assembly elections, particularly the one for the senatorial seat and the two federal constituencies, Remo and Ijebu North/Ijebu East/ Ogun Waterside.

“We want the entire world to know that the results as announced by INEC reflect predetermined, manipulated and fictitious figures forged by a rigging machinery of the PDP led by its senatorial candidate, Mr. Buruji Kashamu.

“The APC is determined to challenge the results of the Ogun East senatorial elections and the two House of Representatives seats within the confines of the law.”

But, in his reaction, Kashamu denied the allegations, saying the claims by the APC are totally unfounded.

Kashamu who spoke through his media aide, Austin Oniyokor, noted that if there was rigging and intimidation, as alleged, the accusers should supply the details.

He said: “Ordinarily, we would not have dignified them with a response. You can see that the statement is loud in noise and lacking in substance.

“If they say there was rigging, intimidation and manipulation during the election, they should supply the details, rather than hiding under some nebulous excuses that say nothing.”

The Buhari Support Organisations has called for the arrest of Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, the Director, Media, Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, for announcing unofficial results.

The Director, Media and Information of the BSO, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, made the call on Monday in Abuja at a news conference.

According to Maduekwe, this is the time for security agencies to show their neutrality by arresting Fani-Kayode because the only authority to announce election results is the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The organisation claimed that Fani-Kayode had breached relevant sections of the Electoral Act by announcing on Sunday that the PDP was leading in the presidential election in 23 states of the federation.

“We ask the security agencies to immediately arrest Fani-Kayode for breaching relevant sections of the Electoral Act which forbids any organ outside INEC from officially declaring election results.

“His arrest for further questioning will be a clear indication that the security agencies are truly unbiased participants in this electoral process.

“His declaration is also a breach of both the first and second Abuja Peace Accord signed by the presidential candidates,’’ Maduekwe said.

He called on the international community and observers to note the steps being taken by the ruling party to cause severe breach of peace and call them to order.

He urged APC supporters to maintain the peace as they await the official announcement of authentic INEC results for the Saturday elections.

“We ask Nigerians to join us in saying `No’ to this recent manifestation of habitual impunity.

“We appeal to all our numerous supporters to sustain their calmness in the face of current provocation and abuse of our electoral processes,’’ he said.

Maduekwe said that APC would reject “in its entirety, the use of security to compromise an election process that has been commended as having high quotient of integrity’’.

He urged INEC to adhere strictly to guidelines for elections which protected candidates through active participation of party agents.

“We request INEC to adhere to the guideline which makes it mandatory for polling unit party agents to sign result sheet forming the basis for collation of reslt at collation centres.

A shocking video obtained by Premium Times at Polling Units 009, 010 and 011 at Oniong West Ward 1, Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has exposed an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission colluding with supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party in the area to rig the presidential and national assembly election in favour of the party.'

The ugly incident happened in the village square – Ikot Eko Ibon village – within the full glare of the villagers.

WATCH THE SHOCKING VIDEO BELOW...

Former Secretary to the Federal Government, Obong Ufot Ekaette and wife, Eme Ekaette, a former senator, are from the area.

But they did not show up for voting on Saturday. Some of those who spoke to newsmen in the area said the Ekaettes may have stayed away from voting because of their disappointment with the PDP and Governor Godswill Akpabio’s leadership style.

INEC officials were through with voters’ accreditation as early as 1:30PM in the three units, but refused to commence voting until some PDP chieftains arrived around 4pm.

The PDP chieftains, who apparently were working in agreement with the INEC officials in the units, immediately ordered all the voters to move away from the polling centre.

In the midst of the confusion that ensued, gunshot was fired within the polling centre, prompting the voters who were mostly old men and women from the village to run away to safety.

The PDP supporters then had a field day thumb-printing ballot papers, under the supervision of INEC officials.

Security officials were not deployed in the three units. It is unclear if it is deliberate to allow the PDP supporters execute their plans without molestation.

One of the INEC officials in the units revealed that he and his colleagues were under pressure from their ‘boss’ to assist the PDP win the elections, but didn’t however explain who the boss was.

The PDP governorship candidate, Udom Emmanuel, is from Onna Local Government Area where the rigging captured on the video took place.

In other parts of Akwa Ibom state, especially in areas considered as APC strongholds, there were reported cases of non-availability of election result sheets at the polling units.

The APC governorship candidate, Umana Umana objected to INEC accreditation and election taking place in his ward at Ndiya, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, because election result sheets were not available.

The Akwa Ibom state chapter of the APC has petitioned INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, calling for fresh election in the state.

On Monday, the APC governorship candidate led a peaceful protest to INEC office in Uyo calling for the cancellation of the poll, describing it as a farce.

The protesters stormed the INEC office while the collation of the presidential election result was going on.

Mr. Umana said the party would not accept the results of Saturday’s elections held in the state.

He said the party, after a review of field reports on the elections across the state, had come to the conclusion that the elections be cancelled.

The People’s Democratic Movement’s candidate for the House of Representatives (Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency), Anny Asikpo, has made similar allegation of election result sheets not being available during the election.

“We have 365 polling units, but as I speak to you I have not seen nor know how the result sheets for yesterday’s election look like because everything was carted away by the PDP to an unknown destination. There was no election in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District,” Dr. Asikpo told a local radio station in Akwa Ibom State, Planet FM, on telephone during a live phone-in programme on Sunday.
