Dramatic footage of a young man dangerously jumping from The

Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) gallery was shown to

congregants on Sunday 28th September 2014, coupled with a stern

message from T.B. Joshua to his detractors.

As the under-fire pastor moved in the midst of worshippers during a

time of prophecy, commotion ensued when a young man blindly leapt off

the high gallery of The SCOAN. Crying out whilst writhing on the floor

with church workers gathered around him, he claimed he needed

‘deliverance’ from Joshua.

Later in the prayer line, the young man, who sustained only a minor

injury to his hand in the fanatical act, asked God for forgiveness for

disrupting the service, adding that he loved Joshua’s ministry and

wanted his prayers.

Joshua played back the clip of the 'suicidal' act, which was

remarkably recorded from a distant camera. “There is nothing you can

do secretly here without being exposed by the Spirit of God,” he

commented, reminding people how a security camera similarly captured

footage of the tragic building that collapsed in The SCOAN, now

crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation.

In an uncharacteristic fashion, Joshua had earlier spoken angrily

about people spreading lies and falsehoods in relation to the

incident, warning that God’s wrath would soon befall them.

“Don’t allow yourself to be used by satan,” Joshua cautioned people.

“I said that our God will get back to them. He has started somewhere…

I pray the satanic agents should be the only ones to suffer this. Warn

your family and brothers about their talk… God is a God of vengeance –

anybody can go for it.”

The cleric continued that the incident was actually provoking God to

reveal to the world more evidence of his Divine calling.

“I have been on this journey for 27 years. Do you think God can close

His eyes and rubbish everything here? They are asking God to bring

more evidence of whether He is the One who called me. Warn everyone to

be very careful. This issue at hand is a delicate issue. Whatever

anybody wants to write, let them write it; they will be the ones to

read it. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. Let us be very careful

of our tongue,” he somberly stated.

Joshua has been the centre of a barrage of criticism since the tragic

building collapse in his church claimed 115 lives, 84 of whom were

identified as South Africans.

“Your responsibility is to the victims and the relations of the

victims and martyrs of faith,” the controversial pastor continued. “If

you say you are born again, look for them. Share what you have with

them – your love, prayer, affection and strength. This is what we call

‘born again’ – your pain is my pain; your joy is my joy.”

Joshua prayed for family members of the ‘martyrs of faith’, that God

would “open their understanding more to know happened here”, as well

as giving them “the grace to continue in Him”.

He added that only genuine Christians would understand his message and

response to the tragedy. “When you are outside the light, you can’t

understand what I am talking about,” he said.

President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday said that despite some positive steps taken by his administration in placing the country on the right track, transformation of the nation cannot be achieved overnight.

The president spoke when he received Primatial award conferred on him by Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, Anglican Church, Most Revd. Nicholas Okoh at the Presidential Villa.

According to him, “We have our transformation agenda, it is not something we can do overnight even if you have all the money in the world. If you want to build a six-storey building, you must give yourself a period that must be a time for you to complete that project.

“We have drawn our map and we have progressed. I believe we are progressing in the right direction.

“For you to really build a society, you need to do things that are critical and continue to do them well. And those things we now changed the world that we are. If we take issues of econony, transport infrastructure, those things that will improve on the economy.

“And if the government continues to do those things very well, it would not take a lifetime for this country to change. It would not take more than ten years. Within a space of ten years, you would see major changes.

“For me and the vice president as well as the federal government, by the grace of God and the willingness of Nigerians, we will do our best to improve the quality of lives of our people” he said.

President Jonathan said he is committed to doing his best to improve on the quality of lives of nigerians and called on the religious leaders to pray for “God to give us the wisdom and mind to do what is right because it takes on God to lead.

“Without the fear of God, nobody can lead well. We are all humans. We are pushed into all kinds of situations. But if God is with you, no matter the challenges, no matter the circumstances you find yourselves” Jonathan said.

President Jonathan said the full story of his political journey can only be told after he has left office.

“Most people know about it, but maybe when I leave office, that is when I will tell the true story of my journey. But I believe very clearly that it is God that made it possible. To even be a deputy governor in the first place, not to talk about being a president. I promise I will do my best” the president noted.

Recounting his growing up, Jonathan said he grew up as a member of the Anglican Church.

“As at that time, it was only Anglican Church that was at my tiny village. But now, I don’t know the number of churches that are there. Almost all the classrooms are churches now. I have been a part of the church from the beginning.'

” I attended Anglican Primary School as a pupil. So I have to be very grateful to the Anglican Church that brought me up. I am what I am today because of the Anglican Church.

“Sometimes, when I listen to the news around the whole world, it reminds me about the Old Testament in days of fighting, fighting and fighting.

And I always ask: Do we stop fighting?

“But God has a reason for everything. I believe whatever is happening to Nigeria will be very temporary. We will go through the challenges. With your prayers, we will go through the challenges” Jonathan said.

Earlier, Okoh explained that the award is conferred on those that exhibits commendable Christian stewardship.

He commended jonathan for his determination at building an equitable country that would be fair and just to all its citizens.

A former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who enrolled Tuesday for a Master/PhD in theology at the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, said he took on the course to deepen his knowledge of God and serve Him better and not because he aspired to become a pastor.

Mr. Obasanjo, who was speaking after completing his registration at the university’s main study centre in Lagos, also said that by enrolling for a Ph.D, he was out to prove that one’s position or age should not be a barrier for continuous learning.

“Learning should be a continuous process and if you can do it and learn without the formality of a university, all well and good. But I chose to learn and continue to learn by other means and through the discipline and the formality of the university system,” he said.

Mr. Obasanjo said the other reason he decided to enroll at the institution was to display the opportunity the institution provided for those aspiring to get a higher education but unable to get admission into conventional universities.

“I wanted to throw a bit of limelight on this institution; knowing fully well that this country at no time in the foreseeable future would be able to provide built and walled universities for all the Nigerian students who want to have higher education,” he said.

The former president is perhaps the biggest ambassador of the institution. In 2009, he enrolled for a postgraduate diploma in theology at the university and graduated with “flying colours.”

According to the Dean of School of Arts and Social Sciences, David Otubanjo, the number of students that enrolled at the university quadrupled following the former president’s enrollment in 2009.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Vincent Tenebe, said the number of enrolled students jumped from 32,000 with 16,000 of them being active students in 2010 to 308,000 enrolled students with 16,000 of them being active in 2014. He said its study centres had grown from 32 to 55 in the same period while the institution’s staff strength grew from 820 in 2010 to 25, 000 in 2014.

“Your intervention in educational development in Nigeria by resuscitating the National Open University, ensuring vigorous development of the institution, enrolling as a student and graduating with flying colours and yet today returning for a higher qualification of PHD can never be over emphasised,” said Mr. Tenebe to Mr. Obasanjo.

The former president called on Nigerians aspiring for higher learning to consider the opportunity provided by NOUN. He said the quality of study at the university was not inferior to conventional universities in the country.

Mr Obasanjo, whose real age is a source of controversy, declined to say how old he was but noted that age should not be hindrance to acquiring knowledge.

“I’ve told my children that when I have difficulty I’d tell them to come and teach me. This proves that there should be no shame in learning and any knowledge that you acquire becomes your own, nobody has to take it away from you,” he said.

The university Vice Chancellor also introduced Mr. Obasanjo to his supervisor, Isaac Ayegboyin, a professor of church history at the Department of Religious Study, University of Ibadan and his assistant, Philip Tachin.

The university also seized the occasion to commission its Centre for Anti-Corruption and Anti-Money Laundering named after the former president.

Thousands more people have been joining pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, ahead of what organisers hope will be the largest day of protests so far.

Tens of thousands of people have been blocking parts of the city for days.

They are demanding that China withdraw plans to vet candidates for the next leadership election in 2017.

Current leader CY Leung has urged the protesters to go home, and Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed Beijing’s influence on the territory.

Mr Xi told party leaders in Beijing that his government would “unswervingly implement the guidelines of ‘one country, two systems’ and the Basic Law, and steadfastly safeguard the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macau”.

Nemanja Matic's header was enough to hand Chelsea a narrow 1-0 win at Sporting Lisbon and send Jose Mourinho's men to the top of group G in the Champions League.

Matic, who spent three years in Lisbon with Sporting's great rivals, Benfica, before returning to the Blues in January, converted Cesc Fabregas's cross after 34 minutes.

The Serb found the net in a half dominated by the visitors but the home side proved more competitive after the break to leave the result in doubt up until the final whistle.

The result sees Chelsea bounce back from their draw with Schalke at Stamford Bridge on matchday 1, while Sporting, who had previously lost just one of nine home fixtures against English opposition, will rue the end of an unbeaten run at the Estadio Jose Alvalade that stretched to 16 matches in European competition.

Having previously claimed that in-form frontman Diego Costa was incapable of playing multiple matches in a week, Jose Mourinho named the Spain international in his starting XI for the second time in four days, while captain John Terry made his 100th Champions League outing.

Costa was in the thick of the action early on - failing to slip a shot past advancing Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio after being sent clean through in the second minute.

It was the visitors who were dictating the early pace but Thibaut Courtois had to be on guard to scoop up a low Jonathan Silva cross from the left when Sporting looked to threaten the Chelsea goal for the first time.

Patricio got down well to deny Andre Schurrle as the Germany forward tried to round the goalkeeper after getting on the end of an Oscar through-ball in the 15th minute before Islam Slimani's downward header at the other end was comfortably held by Courtois.

Schurrle should have done better than skew wide of the left-hand post when Eden Hazard found him with a cut back in the 22nd minute but Matic finally made the breakthrough 12 minutes later. The 26-year-old midfielder peeled off at the back post to meet a Cesc Fabregas free from the left, sending a looping header over a helpless Patricio and into the back of the net.

A push by Filipe Luis on Nani on the edge of the Chelsea box drew the ire of all in green and white five minutes into the second half before Oscar squandered a one-on-one opportunity similar to Costa's early chance.

Sporting certainly looked more alert at the start of the second half - Nani sent an effort into the side netting, while Adrian Silva swerved a volley over the crossbar.

Filipe Luis and Mohamed Salah went close for Chelsea in the closing stages, while a curling strike from Nani whistled narrowly wide, and Mourinho may be concerned by his side's failure to put the match to bed.

However, news of a draw in Group G's other fixture between Schalke and Maribor, along with Costa's ability to last the full 90 minutes, should soon bring a smile back to the face of the Chelsea boss after picking up a valuable three points in his homeland.

Manchester City are five points off the top of Champions League group E following a 1-1 draw at home to Roma.

The hosts enjoyed a near-perfect start on Tuesday as Sergio Aguero won and converted an early penalty before familiar frailties in Europe's premier competition reared their head once again.

Their defence was rarely allowed to settle as Roma flowed forward and took complete control of midfield, with Miralem Pjanic to the fore.

The Bosnia international supplied the ammunition for Francesco Totti to find a 23rd-minute leveller with a brilliant clipped finish, becoming the oldest scorer in Champions League history in the process.

Although Roma failed to recreate their first-half dominance after the break, the draw does far more favours for them in the wake of an opening-day 5-1 victory over CSKA Moscow.

The Russian champions are up next for City, who are winless in two outings and yet to score from open play.

As expected, Joe Hart returned in goal for City in place of Willy Caballero after two games on the bench, while there was also a change in goal for Roma as Morgan De Sanctis (groin) failed a late fitness test, meaning Lukasz Skorupski was handed a rare start.

Experienced City centre-back Martin Demichelis replaced Eliaquim Mangala following the latter's shaky showing in Saturday’s 4-2 win over Hull City, facing up a Roma attack featuring Totti, Gervinho and Alessandro Florenzi.

Roma right-back Maicon returned to face his former club and displayed the inauspicious form on show all too often during his season at the Etihad Stadium when he hauled back Aguero to concede a fourth-minute penalty.

Aguero coolly converted to set his side on the way, but Maicon almost made amends at the other end when he flashed a venomous strike against the underside of the crossbar, and the Italians quickly set about their rivals.

That close call appeared to rob City of their early poise and Hart was out sharply in the 18th minute after Gervinho had evaded Vincent Kompany, but the equaliser was soon to arrive from a familiar source.

Totti spun in behind Kompany to collect a perfectly weighted pass from the excellent Pjanic and lifted a superb finish over Hart, who stumbled as he rushed from his goal.

Roma were fortunate not to concede a second penalty when a prone Kostas Manolas blocked Jesus Navas' cutback with his outstretched arm, but the visitors almost led after 43 minutes when Gervinho raced beyond Gael Clichy and Demichelis to draw a fine save from Hart.

James Milner replaced Navas at half-time as Manuel Pellegrini sought to stem Roma's midfield dominance, but Hart was again the goalkeeper in action seven minutes after the restart.

Florenzi's cross struck a flat-footed Demichelis and fell invitingly for Pjanic, with the England keeper spreading himself well to keep the scoreline level.

Pjanic then arched a curling 25-yard effort narrowly wide as City laboured, despite Milner injecting energy to proceedings.

City midfielder Fernandinho exchanged passes with Yaya Toure and the recently introduced Frank Lampard to prompt a vital last-ditch challenge from Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in the 60th minute.

Five minutes later Pjanic lashed a shot over from the edge of the area - a moment of wastefulness out of keeping with his all-round display - before Skorupski got down well to his left to stop Lampard continuing a purple patch in front of goal.

David Silva prodded the ball narrowly wide in the third minute of injury time, but City have plenty to do if they are to avoid a third group-stage exit in four seasons.

Bayern Munich's 1-0 win in Moscow earlier on Tuesday leaves Pep Guardiola's side on six points, with Roma in second with four points from their first two matches.

A goal from Blaise Matuidi was ultimately enough for Paris Saint-Germain as they beat Barcelona 3-2 in a Champions League thriller on Tuesday.

The Ligue 1 champions were without talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic as well as Thiago Silva and Ezequiel Lavezzi, but held off late Barca pressure to end the visitors' unbeaten start to the campaign and dampen an historic occasion for midfielder Xavi.

Coming off the bench to make a record 143rd appearance in the Champions League proper, the former Spain international was on the losing side after defender David Luiz - a target for the Spanish giants in the close-season - showed his quality in the final third with a smart turn and finish to give PSG what proved to be a short-lived lead after 10 minutes.

Lionel Messi was the man to restore parity less than two minutes later in the Group F clash as he swept home Barca's 500th Champions League goal, although PSG were ahead again shortly before the half-hour mark.

After Marc-Andre ter Stegen failed to collect a deep corner, Marco Verratti headed home his first PSG goal, with Blaise Matuidi making it 3-1 early in the second half.

While Neymar's smart finish from inside the area gave Barca hope, PSG had not lost at home in Europe since November 2006 - a record they maintained with some stoic late defending.

When Sergio Busquets lost possession cheaply early on, former Barca man Thiago Motta blazed PSG's first attempt over the crossbar as the hosts began brightly.

That lively opening was rewarded when Luiz brought down Lucas Moura's free kick and rolled the ball past Ter Stegen as Barca conceded the first competitive goal of Luis Enrique's tenure.

PSG's joy was brief, however, as Messi capped off a slick exchange with Andres Iniesta to level and end his run of three Champions League games without a goal - the Argentina star's longest goalless sequence since May 2009.

Edinson Cavani was next to go close - the Uruguayan firing over from distance after bamboozling Jeremy Mathieu - before Neymar could only prod Messi's expertly dinked throughball over the crossbar.

Verratti then took advantage of some questionable goalkeeping from Ter Stegen, heading in Motta's looping corner after 26 minutes.

While Messi came close with a curled free kick, PSG maintained their lead until the break and Cavani threatened soon after the interval as he cut inside Jeremy Mathieu and into a shooting position, only to slip at the vital moment.

PSG's pressure eventually brought a third goal after 54 minutes when Matuidi swept home Gregory van der Wiel's delivery from the right, although, as in the first half, Barca hit back soon after.

Neymar controlled Dani Alves' delivery on his chest and delicately placed the ball past Salvatore Sirigu before Xavi came on to make Champions League history.

Iniesta - making his 100th appearance in the competition - fired over late on and Marquinhos then blocked Jordi Alba's goalbound effort.

Substitute Munir El Haddadi struck the post with a fierce drive, but Barca's search for a point proved in vain as the home side picked up their first win in Europe this term.

U.S. President, Barack Obama, has pledged the support of the American government to Nigeria in combating terrorism.

The pledge is contained in Obama’s congratulatory message on Nigeria’s 54th independence anniversary, to be marked on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Obama said the U.S was looking forward to strengthening its relationship with Nigeria in the coming year, especially on good governance.

He added that “Nigeria continues to play a key leadership role in Africa and at the UN in promoting regional peace and stability.

“At the heart of our enduring friendship is our shared commitment to democratic values, the rule of law and economic development.

“We look forward to strengthening our relationship and working closely in the coming year, especially in promoting good governance and combating terrorism.

“As Nigerians observe this special day, we wish you a more peaceful and prosperous year,’’ Obama wrote in the message, addressed to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, urged Nigerians to remain united in confronting the challenges facing the country.

Anyaoku spoke to reporters at Nigeria’s foreign ministry headquarters after a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Aminu Wali.

He said “my message to the nation is to celebrate; we have achieved some successes in a number of areas in terms of our development.

“But we still have challenges and my message is that we should remain united in facing those challenges.’’

Anyaoku recounted the role the Commonwealth played in ensuring Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999 and argued that it was erroneous to posit that Nigeria had not benefitted from the 53-nation group.

He said during his tenure, the then Chairman of INEC, Late Justice Ephraim Akpata,

visited him in London several times which culminated in Commonwealth playing a key role in Nigeria’s electoral process.

“I was able to arrange for the Chief Electoral Officer India, the largest democracy in the world, to come here and spend three months in Nigeria helping to run courses for INEC staff.

“In my conversation with the then Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, he would tell you that he found our conversations very helpful in the electoral process.

“In that area, the Commonwealth played an important role in helping the country to return to democratic rule.’’

Similarly, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Aminu Wali, had acknowledged that the country had been very generous to African nations “but it had not reaped more’’ from its generosity.

“Diplomacy is about reciprocity, if I give you more, I expect more from you.

“My intention is to ensure that Nigeria gets more from its investments,’’ he said. (NAN)

Sierra Leone’s government was forced to issue a statement on Tuesday denying that Ebola had been defeated, after hundreds to took to the streets in provinical towns to celebrate what they thought was the end of the epidemic.

Witnesses reported crowds surging into the streets of the northern commercial hub of Makeni, chanting “Ebola is no more” and “Ebola has been defeated”.

Locals said celebrations began late on Monday when a group of suspected Ebola victims were released from a holding centre with negative lab test results.

“This was misinterpreted to mean that the township was totally free from Ebola and the news, which spread like wildfire, sent hundreds into the streets to celebrate,” said resident Moiwo Sesay.

“Commercial bike riders and taxi drivers honked their horns and people embraced each other while some kissed the ground.”

Riot police dispersed the crowds and slapped a dusk-till-dawn curfew on residents, witnesses told AFP. There were no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

“It was a false alarm by some people with ill intentions,” said local police spokesman Ibrahim Samura told AFP.

Makeni, 195 kilometres (120 miles) north of Freetown, is the capital of Bombali district, which is under quarantine along with four other districts as part of a lockdown of more than two million people.

The city has recorded some 220 confirmed Ebola cases, and 172 confirmed or probable deaths from the virus.

Witnesses said similar scenes of celebration unfolded in the northwestern town of Port Loko, the capital of a district of the same name which is also quarantined.

“The government of Sierra Leone has not declared an end of the Ebola virus disease… and is still very busy implementing measures already in place to break the chain of transmission and to eventually contain the disease, which is spreading fast across the country,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The communique reminded Sierra Leoneans that the entire country remained under a state-of-emergency which prohibited public gatherings.

Ebola, which has killed around half of those it has infected in the west African outbreak, is spread through bodily fluids, and local health officials said they feared the celebrations in Makeni may have exacerbated the contagion.

The outbreak has claimed more than 3,000 lives this year in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The Department of State Services, has said it would appeal the judgment of the Federal High Court, Awka, which ordered it to apologise and pay N2 million to a former FCT Minister, Nasir el-Rufai, for restricting his movement during the governorship election in Anambra State in 2013.

The service rejected the order, saying some facts may have been overlooked in the case, noting that it would therefore appeal the judgment.

The Deputy Director, Public Relations, DSS, Marilyn Ogar, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, said the 1999 Constitution empowered the service to detain any suspect for not more than 48 hours before recourse to a court of law.

According to her, the department would be operating like a ministry if it cannot intercept, detain and investigate suspects.

She said, “As a responsive Service, we hold the Judiciary and its sanctity in high esteem, but when you disagree with certain pronouncements of Court, you have the right to appeal and in this case, we will appeal.

“The Instrument setting up the Service and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended gives the Service statutory powers to detain and investigate any suspect for not more than 48 hours before recourse to a Court of Law. In this instance, the complainant was not confined or ‘detained’ for more than two hours.

“If we cannot intercept, detain and investigate, then we would, with due respect, be operating like any Ministry of the Federal Government.”

Ogar denied that the DSS imposed a general restriction on movement during the elections as averred by el-Rufai, noting that it was the duty of the Independent National Electoral Commission, to take measures necessary for the smooth conduct of any election, “and in this case they deemed it proper to restrict movement during voting hours,” she added.

If the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has his way, he will not want to live up to hundred years.

The 72 year old preacher doesn’t mind to live up to 90, but being hundred for him, is not necessary.

Pastor Adeboye gave an indication of his view on longevity last Sunday, while delivering the sermon at the 60th birthday of the founder and president of Living Faith Church worldwide, a.k.a Winners Chapel, Bishop Oyedepo.

‘’When I marked 70 and people prayed that I would be up to 80, I said amen. When they said I would be up 90, I said well, amen. But when they said 100, I didn’t say amen.

“I didn’t because I don’t know what offence I would have committed for God to keep me up to 100 in this sinful world when a crown of glory is awaiting me in heaven.

‘’I wouldn’t mind to be 92 though, so that I will be alive to preach when Bishop Oyedepo is 80. But to live up to 100, I don’t know about that,’’ Pastor Adeboye said, noting that every birthday is a reminder that ‘’our days are numbered’’.

At least 3,700 children in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have lost one or both parents to Ebola this year, the UN children’s agency has said.

Finding care for them is proving incredibly difficult because the children are stigmatised, Unicef added.

Some are “being fed by neighbours but no more”, the agency said.

The World Health Organisation says more than 3,000 people have died of Ebola in West Africa – the world’s most deadly outbreak of the virus.

The Unicef figure on the number of children orphaned because of Ebola follows a two-week assessment mission in the three countries worst-affected by the outbreak.

It found that children as young as three or four-years-old were being orphaned by the disease.

Children were discovered alone in the hospitals where their parents had died, or back in their communities where, if they were lucky, they were being fed by neighbours – but all other contact with them was being avoided.

The UN children’s agency says there is an urgent need to establish a system for identifying and caring for Ebola orphans.

It will be holding a meeting on the issue in Sierra Leone next month but before then it wants potential carers to come forward.

An earlier version of this story said that 4,900 children had lost parents but the correct figure is 3,700.

Some Nigerians have hailed President Goodluck Jonathan’s inclusion of some ordinary people as recipients of the 2014 National Honours Awards.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday , the respondents said described the decision as commendable, saying that it would encourage more Nigerians to be diligent in their endevours.

Mrs Kemi Abdulrasak, an Abuja-based civil servant, said “The president’s recognition of those ordinary people is really commendable and he should keep it up.

“This shows that diligence has reward and people would be encouraged to be more patriotic in whatever they do,” she said.

For Patrick Attaiye, an artist, it is a call to higher responsibility for the awardees.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. I am sure they didn’t know that their modest efforts were being noticed at the highest level. They should keep it up.”

Attaiye added that the President was so thoughtful to have awarded the Head of Presidential Stewards, Mr. Onuh Isaac Michaels.

“Onuh, who hails from Etutekpe Community in Olamaboro Local Government of Kogi State, is reputed to have served nine presidents to date.

“I believe he never taught of being awarded.”

However, Mr Abraham John, a pensioner, suggested that such awards should come with some financial incentive.

“Though the recognition is commendable, it could become valueless, if the awardees live in penury.

“I suggest that some financial incentive should be attached, especially for those poor awardees.”

NAN reports that a total of 313 Nigerians were honoured by the President at a ceremony that saw recipients who had distinguished themselves in their fields of endeavour bagging various categories of the National Award.

Among the awardees, it was Mr. Imeh Usuah, an Abuja-based taxi driver who returned a large sum of money forgotten in his vehicle, Mr. Solomon Dauda, a traffic warden, and Mr. Onuh Isaac, a steward, who stole the show.

In addition to the award of the Member of the Order of the Niger, three of them also got house gifts in the Federal Capital Territory.

Jonathan also directed that the designer of the national flag, Pa Michael Akinkunmi, be placed on the salary of a Special Assistant to the President for life, in addition to his national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic.

The President charged the honourees to ensure that the awards were not seen as mere pieces of paper and garlands tied around their necks.

A member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Gordon Bezimo has asked the All Progressives Congress to take a cue from the PDP which has eliminated rancour by endorsing President Goodluck Jonathan.

Bezimo said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He was reacting to the condemnation of the endorsement by the APC.

The BoT member who is also the chairman of the governing board of the National Youth Service Corps, also said he saw no reason why the decision to endorse the president became the business of the opposition party.

He said “They should make themselves busy with how they can get their own candidates. I can assure you that by the time they finish, they will understand the advantage of having a consensus candidate.

“Secondly, it is the practice in civilised climes that once you have a sitting President who is doing well, you do not subject him to party primaries, because the acrimonies and disagreements that follow primary processes tears a party apart.

“So if you can avoid it, you endorse the President to go for a second term. So, we are teaching the other parties what to do, although it would take them a long time to get presidency, but even if it is 60 years from now, if they happen to produce the President, they should do what we are doing.”

However, reacting to Bezimo’s suggestion, National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said while the practice of endorsement was democratic, there was nothing to emulate about the way the PDP went about endorsing the President.

He said “The price being paid for Mr. Jonathan’s endorsement by Nigeria is simply too heavy, considering that the PDP governors who spearheaded the endorsement have now secured perpetual immunity from prosecution by anti-graft bodies, including the EFCC and the ICPC; the automatic tickets for all first-term PDP Governors, whether or not they have performed, the automatic tickets for all PDP governors running for the Senate, as well as the free ride back to the Upper Chamber for Senate President David Mark.”

Mohammed also recalled that the fact that leading lights in the American Democratic Party endorsed President Barrack Obama did not prevent Senator Hilary Clinton from seeking the party’s nomination.

Earlier, while speaking about the just concluded National Conference, Bezimo who was a member said decisions reached at the conference were capable of taking Nigeria to the next level if implemented.

He listed some of the issues which were addressed to include: marginalization, state creation and resource allocation.

According to him, the implementation of the conference report has been broken into three with the President given assurance that he will take care of the part that requires executive action.

He also said the other two parts which require constitutional amendment and legislative action will be forwarded to the National Assembly for implementation.

Bezimo equally dismissed calls for the scrapping of the NYSC as myopic. He said the scheme has over the years provided the required platform for national integration.

First Lady Patience Jonathan on Monday reiterated the need for love, peace and unity among the people of Rivers.

The president’s wife made the appeal when she visited, Chief Peter Odili, a former Rivers governor, to congratulate him for receiving the Commander of the Order of Niger (CON) Award.

Other recipients of CON from the state, include Minister of State for Education, Chief Nysom Wike; and Sen. George Sekibo.

She said these virtues were the hallmark of Odili’s tenure as the governor of the state.

The first lady, who extolled Odili’s virtues, said that the former governor carried everyone along.

“I am not surprised at the honour bestowed on you today; it is an honour well deserved, you served well and carried every Rivers person along.

“Everybody know me as Mama Peace because I believe in peaceful coexistence,’’ she said.

Jonathan urged the people to emulate Odili’s leadership quality and continue to support him.

Odili, who spoke on behalf of other recipients from the state, said that since 1967, it was the first time the state would be producing three CON awardees.

He expressed his appreciation to the first lady for her love and support to the people.

The former governor said this would not have been possible without the hard work, commitment and love expressed by the first lady toward her people. (NAN)

What if a man leaves the comfort of a bank job to face an uncertain future as a film maker and not long after wins the Oscar? Well, this may be the premise someday for Kunle Afolayan’s story. Hailed by the New York Times as the ‘Martin Scorsese of Lagos’, Kunle has continued to push back the frontiers of film making in Nigeria. In this interview, he talks about his new film, October 1, and the journey so far as a film maker. Enjoy!

How was growing up like with your dad, Ade Love, and how has that influenced who you are today?

I would say my growing up really helped and influenced where I am today. It also influenced my decision to do what I am doing today -which is film making.

I didn’t really have the opportunity to try my hands on the trade as a child but, as I grew older, unofficially my father got me involved in how to do cinema business not really how to make film.

I didn’t know anything about how to make film but how to do exhibitions, and also promotions of films, and I did that for some time before my father passed on and through that I also visited some of the movie sets.

That also got me curious and interested in movie making but, to a large extent, I would say my background has really helped in moulding and grooming me towards what I have become today.

Is being a film maker what you’ve always wanted to be,considering the fact that you majored in accounting before you went to the New York Film Academy and you also worked in the bank as well?

Well, I would say yes and no, film wasn’t in my agenda but, of course, an average child who grew up around a movie making circle would probably want to be an actor, maybe not a film maker; you know, as a child, almost all the children of the practitioners were also involved in the same business then – acting.

For us our father shielded us from it because he just said, you would be distracted and you needed to go to school and be educated. Yes, I always enjoyed the cheap publicity of being a son of Ade Love but it wasn’t something I really wanted to do, not until I grew up, the man passed on, then I was seeing a new generation of film makers and I realized they were not doing as much as my father and those who started it used to do and I said to myself, ‘I can actually do better’, which was what really got me interested in making film.

How easy was it for you to leave the comfort of a paid employment to jump into the uncertain waters of filmmaking, I mean first you left for the New York Film Academy, what gave you that confidence that this was going to work out?

Well, before I even became a film maker, I started off as an actor in 1998, and when the zeal, anxiety and dream of wanting to become a film maker came, I approached established film makers like Tade Ogidan and Tunde Kelani.

Tunde Kelani gave me audience and when I said I wanted to be a film maker, he said what do I know about films? That film making is not a fluke -you have to learn it, you need to go to school -and he said he would advice that I start as an actor, that if I started as an actor, I could start like my father.

When it was time for them to shoot Saworoide, they invited me for audition and I scaled through and that was how I started as an actor. But, the following year, I started working in the bank, that didn’t give me room to feature in so many films. So, while in the bank between 1998 and 2004, I didn’t feature in up to ten films.

But in 2004 I said to myself that I didn’t belong in the bank. I was making money, I was comfortable, I had a car, I was living in a four-bedroom flat but it wasn’t really what I wanted to do. So one day I resigned, stayed home for eight months doing research on what I wanted to do.

Afterwards I went to school, did a diploma in digital film making, came back, and set up this production office; it was quite small, just two people and now we are where we are and I think it’s the passion really.

Apart from the normal challenges any entrepreneur faces, what was the most difficult challenge you faced when you came back from America to set up?

Setting up, as an entrepreneur, like getting an office, was not difficult for me because there was someone who was just moving out of an office and the person had six months’ rent still available and he said to me, ‘Kunle, you can take over this office and when the rent lapses you can pay’.

I just said to myself, ‘I doubt if I would be able to pay’, because it was in Opebi, but I said ‘let me at least enjoy the first six months’. I took over the office, got an office assistant and it was just two of us. Then I got myself a computer to learn editing, then this idea of Irapada film came.

From ‘Irapada’, I bought my first camera. Thereafter, every project that I did, I’m always equipping myself for those projects, that was how it all started. After Irapada, we grew to maybe a company of five staff and we moved out of there to another office, a bigger space. But I would say we have really done well in Golden Effect between 2004 and now.

And I think what has really helped is the fact that once I dreamt it, it had to be actualized, and I’ve always worked with practically the same people as crew, some of them on contract, some of them as permanent staff. In addition, I’m able to combine my creativity in art with business, and that is why the show is still on because a lot of people don’t break even in art.'

Of all the movies you’ve produced and directed, which one is your favourite?

That’s a tough question because I think there are different genres, there are different kinds of films, so people relate to them differently and they have their advantages. Irapada, which was the first film, cut across the lower Yoruba crowd; Figurine was what did it for me, it went really international, recognized all over the world; but it cost me so much. In fact that was the most difficult film I have ever done. October 1 is not even as difficult as Figurine.

And why is that?

Well, it’s because after Figurine, I did Phone Swap, so I’ve been able to master the flow, the trade and business. October 1 is supposed to be more difficult because it’s even set in a particular period and it benches you to a particular work flow, you can’t shoot in a modern setting and you can’t have cables and masts and billboards, mobile phones, you can’t have all of these showing in your film, meaning our direction must be accurate.

Figurine was a bold step. Figurine was a step that nobody in this country has ever tried before, so it cost arm and leg – we lost a lot of equipment, a lot of people fell ill after the shooting; it was really tough and it’s because we embarked on something that seemed bigger than we bargained for.

You are a very busy man and obviously you have to travel and be on the road most times -how have you been able to handle that and still stay happily married with four kids?

Well, they came into my life while I was already in this business. My wife of course knows what goes with the kind of job that I do; so when I’m not working, I give them all the attention, and when I’m working, the one they can join and support in, they do; the ones they can’t, they give me my space and allow me do my thing. So really I’ve been able to balance both.

You wrote on your Facebook page, about a month ago, how you and your brother Gabriel were isolated on a flight to Seychelles from other Kenyans onboard due to the Ebola virus scare. How was the experience and have you had other related challenges lately as a Nigerian?

Well, I wasn’t really surprised because the Ebola thing was all in the air that time. We flew through Kenya to Seychelles and while in Kenya we had to go with some of our Kenyan colleagues. When we got to Seychelles, the Kenyans were coming from East Africa we were coming from West Africa and West Africa is where the Ebola thing has been reported. So, even with my yellow card, they had to put me and my brother aside and allowed every other person to go and we had to fill so many forms.

We had to be sure that we were not coughing but because we were also invited by the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation. It was easy to just get out once they realized that we were government’s guests, but it’s normal, it’s good to take precautions. Nigerians would have done the same thing. I didn’t know the news was going to spread that much because I was just thinking out loud, I wasn’t reporting.

Tell us about your latest movie October 1. What was the inspiration behind it?

October 1 is a film set in Nigeria against the backdrop of the Nigerian independence in 1960.

When the idea of the film came, I was initially going to run away from it because I knew it was going to be challenging and considering that in Nigeria we hardly archive things, we don’t even have records. We were looking for all the guns of the 60s, we couldn’t find them. When I read the script, I realized it was challenging but if I did this, it was going to definitely put me on a new slate and it’s a film that cut across internationally.

October 1st

So I decided to give it a shot and not just shooting it, but also using actors that I believed would do justice to interpreting the roles. The project took us about two years, pre- production took more than six months, we shot for about two months, and post-production took more than eight months.'

Right now, it’s ready and it’s going to have its world premiere on the 28th of September 2014 at the Eko Hotel and Suites. After that, it’s going to be released in cinemas in Nigeria from the 1st of October.

How much did the movie cost you?

It’s a two – million dollar budget film.'

How did you get Sadiq Daba to feature in it?

When I read the script and the script says ‘a northern police detective who is at the age grade of 50 and 60’, I looked around and I didn’t want someone who could speak Hausa, I wanted someone who could really represent the North when people see it. I looked around and he was the only person that came to mind. I looked for him and found him. I got him the first draft and he got excited and we pulled it through.

Has any of your children shown interest in acting?

Well, even if they don’t show it, sometimes when I’m looking for extras, I always put them. At least it saves me cost but I know that there’s no way one of them would not end up doing what I’m doing. If they want to do it, I would give them all the support they would need. If not, whatever it is they want to do, I’m open.

What’s your thought on actors going into politics now and do you have any plans of doing same in the nearest future?

Well, Arnold Schwarzenegger became a governor and Ronald Reagan was also an actor; so there’s nothing wrong. First of all, you have the advantage of having people who like you because you are a public figure.

But being a public figure as an actor is different from going into politics. Politics is a serious game; for me, I am not interested, but I would always support anybody who I believe has good intention to lead. I’m not a politician but I would always do whatever it is in my capacity to support whoever that I think is chasing the right position.
