Chidi Llyod, the Leader of Rivers House of Assembly was today brought before Justice L. L Nyordee of the Port-Harcourt high court.

Lloyd is facing a six- count charge of conspiracy to murder and assault, attempted murder and malicious damage arising from the fracas in the House of Assembly on 9 July.

He was brought amidst a very tight security mounted by the anti-riot policemen drawn from the Rivers State Police Command.

The law maker was unable to walk on his own but was aided by two security men into the court.

His arraignment provoked a heated argument between Worgu Boms, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Chika N.Dewingwe, SAN, representing the Nigeria Police. Dewingwe argued that under the the Nigerian Constitution, the police have the power to prosecute the lawmaker since the case is a criminal case.

Dewinigwe argued that the state Attorney-General of a state cannot take over the case when the accused has not taken a plea whether guilty or not. The case has been adjourned till August 6 for hearing.

Reacting to the state of health of Lloyd, the Deputy Speaker,Leyii Kwanee said the inability of Lloyd to walk on his feet was a confirmation of the alarm he had earlier raised that Lloyd was being tortured to extract information from him.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the successful registration of the new party.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tony Okeke, the party described the birth of the APC as healthy development for the nation’s democracy.

The statement, however, said the registration of the APC does not pose any threat to the ruling party, adding that it still maintains its pre-eminent position and enjoys acceptance across the country.

It said: “Nigerians now expect the leaders of the opposition party to eschew all forms of bitterness and desperation and desist from politics of propaganda which characterized their former parties.

“The PDP urges the APC leaders to focus on issues and engage in more robust debates on the economy and other issues of governance in the general interest of the country.

“The leadership of the PDP congratulates the leadership of the APC on the successful registration of their new party. This is very healthy for our democracy.

“We hope that from now the opposition will eschew all forms of bitterness and desperation and desist from politics of propaganda which characterized their former parties.

“We hope to see a vibrant opposition that will constructively engage the PDP on issues of governance in a way that Nigerians will be the utmost beneficiaries, instead of overheating the polity by promoting violence and hatred among the people.”

The Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has lashed out at those who are playing cheap and dirty politics by the decision of the Lagos State government to move some homeless, indigent citizens to their home states for rehabilitation.

The party said that no sane government would be blackmailed into allowing homeless Nigerians to continue to inflict security and environmental problems on its state just to please those that readily play lousy and retrogressive politics with issues for their selfish and ulterior interests.

In a release in Lagos, signed by the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Joe Igbokwe, the party said it is particularly irked by the decision of some professional chance takers and political opportunists to take advantage of the recent movement of some indigent, homeless and social miscreants to Onitsha for the purpose of re-connecting with their families when they have no tangible business in Lagos.

The party said there should be an end to opportunistic politics and cheap ethnic and tribal politics as are being played out over the issue. The party said that transporting indigent, homeless miscreants to their home states is not a new idea and not limited to Igbos.

“We expect that the opposition in Lagos and its array of frustrated politicians in Lagos will certainly seek to play politics with the decision of the Lagos State government to move some people that have no tangible business staying in Lagos to their home states. We expected that the professional ethnic agitators who have wasted public offices in Igboland, pillaging resources that would have served the interests of the people are now cashing further from the plights of their vicious approach to governance on this issue. We however want to state that it is a shame to the opposition that it is seeking cheap political capital from the plight of the hapless victims of its free loading approach to governance and has drawn the support of ethnic irredentists whose failure on governance left the Igbo people so poor that they have become homeless refugees in Lagos and other parts of the country. It is a huge irony that the PDP, which has purloined the country in fourteen years of vicious corrupt governance, is the one now seeking to make political capital from the plight of its victims and says so much of the dominant politics of deception, corruption and greed which had hallmarked the unfortunate PDP governance of the country since 1999.

“To put the records straight, the Lagos State government, with its commitment to the interests of Lagosians and in its effort to build a functional modern mega city, had long embarked on the decision to pick up the many derelicts, the homeless, beggars and social miscreants that inhabit all parts of Lagos.”

Clean them up, find means of livelihood for those that are employable and send those it cannot manage to their respective states. We are all aware that this scheme has seen the practical reduction in the number of the beggars, street urchins and social miscreants that used to constitute real danger to life in Lagos and has seen such people moved back to various states, mainly in the North.

“We should note also that other states in the South, including South West states have received such people and the Lagos State Government has been careful to ensure that the number of people involved in such periodic movements are minimal and are only people who do not have where to stay in Lagos, who don’t have any real engagement in Lagos and who constitute nuisance to other Lagosians. We also put the nation on notice that before the latest movement of some people to Onitsha, we notified the Anambra State government, which neither responded nor took action on our complaint. We also want the public to note that the Lagos State government was involved in similar deal with the Akwa Ibom State government when some indigent Lagosians were moved back from Akwa Ibom State to Lagos. We want Nigerians to note that such movements are common with nearly all states in Nigeria and is becoming an issue just because selfish politicians and ethnic reapers who were prominent in the despoliation of the country see it as new and worth cashing in on.”

ACN added: “We want to throw a frontal challenge to the PDP and the ethnic chance takers now making undue issue over the present case to let Nigerians know any one of those sent back to their states who has a home, job or business in Lagos. We want them to go further to tell us any of those deported with any fixed address or legitimate means of livelihood. We are peeved that selfish politicians and their ethnic soulmates who have relentlessly pursued the pauperization of Nigerians even in their home states are the ones seeking cheap political ends from the plight of their victims and this is condemnable.

“Lagos ACN wants to let Nigerians know that Igbos constitute over 45 per cent of the population of Lagos and they dominate key sectors of the Lagos economy. Is there any case where any of the millions of Igbo with one legitimate business or the other in Lagos is involved in the recent movement? Igbos find Lagos a safe haven for their legitimate productive activities and the present government has sustained good and cordial efforts to ensure this prevails. We want to state that Lagos hosts the largest population of Igbo in any single state outside Igboland, how is it that the movement of about 60 Igbo miscreants to their home state has now become an issue political and ethnic reapers want to cash in to destroy this priceless relationship?

“We want to warn Ndigbo and Lagosians to beware of the leaven of the PDP and their ethnic collaborators who have spared nothing to deepen poverty and want in Nigeria and always turn round to cash in on the fate of the victims of these deadly politics. We want to assure Ndigbo in Lagos that nothing will be done to hurt and injure their interests and equally let those whose stay in Lagos constitutes threat to others that the Lagos State government will do everything within its rights to protect the lives, interests and well being of the over 20 million Lagosians who are law abiding and find legitimate reasons to stay in Lagos.”

A 27-year-old man was killed by his friend, weekend, over the ownership of a mobile phone charger.

The tragedy occurred at Isapodo area of Ijebu-Ife, in Ijebu North-East Local Government Area of Ogun State on Sunday.

The victim, Mr Dele Oje, described as an easy going person by his neighbours, was said to have been allegedly killed by his friend, simply identified as Muyideen after the latter requested for a phone charger from the former.

Investigations revealed that Oje had earlier argued with his friend over who owned the charger minutes before he was killed.

Shortly before his death, an argument had ensued between the duo, prompting neighbours in the two-storey building to intervene.

Unfortunately, the neighbours had barely left the scene of the argument, when Dele’s friend descended on him as the deceased attempted to have his breakfast and slashed his throat with a sharp object.

A neighbour of the deceased who did not want to be named, narrated what she described as an unfortunate incident, said: “We had earlier settled a seeming quarrel between the friends over the ownership of a telephone charger when Muyideen killed his friend’’.

‘We got there later only to see blood stains on the wall and floor of the building, an indication that Oje had attempted to escape from his assailant’’.

Another resident who identified himself as Abayomi Oyeyemi also said that after the murder, Muyideen fled only to be fished out in a near-by bush, three hours after.

The body has been deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary while Muyideen who was arrested by the youths in the community had been handed over to police at the Ogbere division.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who said he was yet to be briefed by the Ogbere Divisional Police Officer, added that he did not have details of the incident.

Relationships in the House are always complex, especially when they become intimate. Beverly and Angelo can attest to this as they got to know one another first as contenders in the game and then as lovers. Tonight they spoke about their fears when they leave Biggie’s House and have to be a couple in the real world.

The two were kissing outside near the Jacuzzi when Angelo said Beverly smelled like smoke. Obviously she would be smelling of smoke from the cigarette she was smoking next to him but Angelo needed Beverly to understand that it’s not nice kissing a girl that smokes yet he doesn’t.

But when all that had subsided the two went into serious mode with their conversation straying from smoking to them pursuing their relationship in the outside world. Beverly said that Angelo terrifies her because she’s fallen in love with him so fast. “I try to deny that I love you because I’m thinking it’s too early to love you when I don’t know how you are in the outside world,” she said concerned.

Angelo understood where she was coming from but also had the same fears as Beverly did. “To be honest, I’m also kind of scared of knowing you on the outside,” he told her. But Beverly quickly defended herself saying she has told him everything about her and whatever he hears on the outside should not matter.

She then asked him a question he was all too happy to answer. “Can you marry a person like me?” she asked almost shy. Angelo didn’t hesitate to answer. “Yes, but would you marry someone like me?” he asked as well. She agreed saying that she would have no choice because she loves him. Is that wedding bells we hear?

Do you think Beverly and Angelo will tie the knot in the outside world?

When asked about her marriage plans in a new interview, Nollywood actress Eniola Badmus said she must date a guy for at least five years before she will consider marrying him. Eniola said:

"What is the point if I marry today and tomorrow it’s over? What’s the essence? I am living my life. I will have a baby when necessary. Marriage is good but what’s the essence of me getting married today and tomorrow I’m not in it? For any man I am going to marry or call my husband we should be together for five years before we walk down the aisle. We may have children but at least after five years I will know that you’re ready for me. Not getting married today, and tomorrow he’s out! I’ve seen it happen to my friends, I don’t want to go through that trauma. "

Does dating a guy for five years guarantee that the marriage will last?

•Hide bombs inside wheelbarrows laden with bananas, oranges

…My escape was divine, says motorist who went for car keys at drinking bar

More details emerged yesterday on Monday’s twin explosions by Boko Haram in Kano metropolis even as survivors recounted how they cheated death. The Joint Security Task Force (JTF) and the police said 12 people died while 12 others were injured. Ohanaeze Ndigbo disagreed with the figures, saying 45 people lost their lives.

It was confirmed yesterday that the lone bomber hid the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in a wheelbarrow, disguising as a fruit seller before they were detonated at New and Enugu/Igbo Road, all in Sabon-Gari, populated by non-indigenes, mostly the Igbos.

One explosion went off at 41 New Road, the Christ Salvation Pentecostal Church at the peak of evening worship.

An eyewitness, Mazi Columba Ndubuisi, told Daily Sun that the Boko Haram bomber arrived in Enugu Road, with a wheelbarrow, adding that the terrorist pretended to be selling watermelon, oranges and bananas. According to him, the attacker hid the IEDs inside the wheelbarrow under the bananas and oranges, adding that after roaming innocently for a while, he parked the wheelbarrow near the shop of one Mama Ejima by the side of a parked Mercedes Benz car. Ndubuisi said he trades on fire -fighting equipment very close to the scene of the blasts, when the boy parked his wheelbarrow casually, some people were actually calling him to come and sell to them, but they surprisingly noticed that the boy, rather than selling, made his way to the main road, leaving his wares.

He said barely a few minutes after, the bomb exploded killing the woman (Mama Ejima) and several other people.

Another witness, who is simply called Mr. Eddy, said typical of the fellowship, worshippers separated themselves from their children, adding that the kids were roaming about the scene when the first device exploded near their play-point.

The witness, who was watching football in a nearby bar when the first blast occurred, recalled that following the shocking explosion, the whole scenario was thrown into confusion, with several people sustaining injuries, while many more died of the first blast.

He said that just minutes after the first blast, when they were trying to escape, the second exploded, trapping some people who had dared to run in the direction of the first blast.

Mr. Eddy, who resides in the same building where the church is located, said several people died on account of the blasts, including three persons who sat close to him at their drinking table.

“There was smoke everywhere. People were running everywhere, people were lying on the ground, many motorists jumped inside their cars and sped off. They came here with four pick-up vans to carry the bodies. I did not count them, but I know that they were many,” he added.

Meanwhile, several families were yet to discover the whereabouts of their relatives. Daily Sun learnt that at least, eight wounded persons were hospitalized.

Speaking from his hospital bed at the Emergency Unit of the Armed Forces Hospital in the state capital, Mr Chika Ekenne said the blasts took them by surprise, adding that but for the mercy of God, he would have died from the explosion.

Ekenne, who had deep wounds on his left shoulder in addition to several sharp cuts, said that he was hit by the second explosion that occurred in New Road area of Sabon -Garri Area.

According to the victim, who was wreathing in pains at press time, he was a resident of Abuja, who had come to the state to finish a business, adding that he went to the particular scene in the company of a friend to give some money to his daughter, who was to transfer the same to another of his children, who is in school.

Mr. Ekenne, who hails from Etiti in Mbaino in Imo State told Daily Sun that when the first bomb exploded by the side of the church, a number of people at the drinking bar escaped, adding that unfortunately, he forgot his keys when he fled in fright.

He recalled that in the midst of the thick billowing smoke, thinking that it was a single blast, he ran back, only to be hit by the second explosion which stuck him and threw particles at him.

While pleading that they should not tell his wife about his current state and tragedy, he noted that his wife may not be able to stand the shock.

Meanwhile, a statement signed by JTF spokesman, Capt. Ikedeche Iweha, said Boko Haram detonated the bombs which killed 12 people and injured 12 others, while 19 vehicles were destroyed.

According to the JTF, the incident could have been avoided if the residents had maintained vigilance by reporting to the authorities, strange objects. Capt. Iweha recalled that the task force had urged people to keep an eye on their environments as there was a tip-off that the terror group had planned to attack Kano.

Also, the state police command, in a statement by Mr. Magaji Magiya, confirmed the JTF’s casualty figures.

Reacting to the attack, president of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Kano State Chapter, Chief Tobias Michael Idika, claimed that 45 people were killed even as he called on President Goodluck Jonathan to take urgent steps to strengthen security of lives and property of residents in the northern parts of the country.

In a statement, the apex Igbo group said: “Ohanaeze account can confirm 39 deaths in New Road and six in Enugu/Igbo Road, and an unspecified number of people who got injured. The terrorists invaded Sabon-Gari, an enclave carved out for non-natives and planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) which exploded almost simultaneously at Enugu/Igbo Road, near International Hotel and on New Road, directly opposite the popular Ado Bayero Square precisely at Nos 38, 39, 40 and 41.

“At 41 New Road, the Christ Salvation Pentecostal Church was also bombed at the peak of evening worship.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), through its state chairman, Bishop Ramos Bello, condemned the attack. He prayed God to receive the departed souls and comfort the wounded. He appealed for deployment of more troops in the state.

Meanwhile, the state government has condemned the attack. Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who visited the scenes, described the attack as devastating. He promised to pay for the treatment of the injured victims.

Eight-year-old boy, Pan Xianhang has been nicknamed 'fish boy' by neighbours because he's covered from head to toe in thick, itchy scales.

He was born in Wenling, China with a rare genetic skin disease known as Ichthyosis, after the ancient Greek word for fish.

Ichthyosis is a heterogeneous family of at least 28 generalized, mostly genetic skin disorders. All types of ichthyosis have dry, thickened, scaly or flaky skin. In many types there is cracked skin, which is said to resemble the scales on a fish.

Most sufferers develop dry scaly skin across part of their body, but Pan's case is severe, his scales have affected the shape of his eyes, nose, mouth and ears and they limit the movement of his arms and legs.

The condition also means he's in constant pain and struggles to sleep at night because of the itching.

Sufferers are treated with creams, oils and moisturisers, which are designed to hydrate the skin.

Liz Dale a spokesperson for the UK-based Ichthyosis Support Group said: "There is no known cure and treatments for ichthyosis are predominantly keeping the skin moisturised with plenty of emollients i.e. lotions and creams. "The skin needs to be moisturized to prevent it from further drying out, which could cause the skin to crack, making it more prone to infection, which may be fatal."

fish boy

It is estimated that each year, more than 16,000 babies are born with some form of Ichthyosis, varying in severity of symptoms, according to Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types.

Even as Doctors are currently looking into other ways to treat him, Pan is not the first to make headlines for this stifling disease.
