We’ve raised bar against corruption – Jonathan

In comparison with past administrations, President Goodluck Jonathan has claimed that his administration has raised the bar against corruption in Nigeria.

In his Mid-Term report presented to the public on Wednesday, the president said his administration now pursues a more strategic, comprehensive and effective campaign against corruption.

According to him, his administration has gone beyond popular sentiments to address the root causes of corruption and enhance the capacity of the institutions to resist and overcome corrupt influences.

The report reads: “President Jonathan’s approach in fighting corruption is to focus on building strong institutions that have the capacity to overcome corrupt influences and not just to sermonize about corruption.”

“This approach uses the rule of law as a framework to fight corruption since corruption is a feature of weak rule of law and weak institutions,” it stated.

The widespread international perception of Nigeria as a corrupt country, the report said, has caused incalculable damage to the dignity and honour of many honest and diligent Nigerians and to the country’s global competitiveness.

Some of the achievements of the administration against corruption, the report said included: Signing the Freedom of Information Act into law, the uncovering of fraud and deletion of over 73,000 ghost/fake pensioners from the Head of Service/ Police Pension Office.

Others included recovery and savings of over N225 billion from the two pension offices, halting the monthly theft of over N4 billion from the national treasury, reducing fraud by saving over N500 million monthly through the police pension releases.

“Another giant stride is the suspension of Justice Abubakar Talba of the FCT High Court, Gudu. The 12 month suspension follows the controversial judgment he delivered in respect of John Yusufu, who was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged N32.8 billion Police Pension Fraud,” it added.

The recent dismissal of three judges found to have compromised their offices, the report said, is a signal of zero tolerance for corruption in the judiciary.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says five Nigeriens and two Chadians are among the fleeing insurgents apprehended by the Special Forces as troops continue their pursuit of terrorists dislodged from their bases.

This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, the Director of Defence Information in Abuja.

The statement said that the seven insurgents were among the nine arrested at Tumbu Gini, a border town with Chad as they tried to cross the borders into Chad.

It said that the man suspected to be leading the group escaped with gunshot wounds.

The statement said the Defence Headquarters had observed that attempts were being made by insurgents and their collaborators to push into public domain, questionable and manipulated messages meant to misinform the public.

“The message, which calls for support from Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as other cohorts of the insurgents, is clearly a confirmation of the level of pressure which has been brought to bear on the insurgents.

“There is indeed no cause for alarm as the insurgents are actually in flight, necessitating their call for help from their foreign allies.”

The statement added that the operation to put an end to the activities of insurgents was continuing in line with the overall plans for the nation’s security.

Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau and factional Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), on Friday led 14 state governors to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa.

Addressing State House correspondents after a closed door meeting, Jang said they were in the villa to consult with the President.

He said “we have met with Mr President with me leading a team of governors from the Nigerian Governors Forum to congratulate Mr President and to consult with him on very serious national issues’’.

When asked on the specific issues discussed with President Goodluck Jonathan, the governor said it ranged from security to governance and development.

“You know the security problem in the country and what we need to do in the coming two years to ensure that democracy stabilised and development continues in the country,” he said.

Also responding to the question of the division in NGF, he said: “Well, let me tell you that there is no any faction of the NGF. The NGF is one and I am the chairman of the NGF.’’

The governors, who met the president with Jang, included Liyel Imoke of Cross River, Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Peter Obi of Anambra, Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa and Theodore Orji of Abia.

Others are Ramalan Yero of Kaduna State, Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Idris Wada of Kogi, Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State and Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State.

Also in attendance were the acting Governor of Taraba, Garba Umar and the Deputy Governor of Benue, Steven Lawani.

It would be recalled that following last Friday’s election of the NGF, Gov. Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers and Jang of Plateau both laid claim to the chairmanship of the forum.

Amaechi was declared winner of the election with 19 votes to 16 polled by Jang, but loyalists to the Plateau governor faulted the results and declared Jang the winner. (NAN)

A former IT Specialist in Australia claims to be Jesus and he’s already gathered some followers. According to Sky News, Alan John Miller, or AJ as he prefers to be known, runs a religious movement known as the Divine Truth from his home near the small town of Kingaroy in the state of Queensland.

Miller also claims that his Australian partner (in the picture) is Mary Magdalene and she was present at the crucifixion. He recalled raising his friend, Lazarus from the dead.

The weird thing is that people actually believe this man. A California man, George Hamel left behind a business and his wife in the United States to be closer to Mr Miller and his teachings. He firmly believes Mr Miller is Jesus Christ and insists there’s nothing sinister about him.

This handout image released by Britain's Ministry of Defence on May 23, 2012 shows Drummer Lee Rigby, who was killed in an attack on a London street on May 22, 2013, posing for a photograph. AFP

The British soldier killed by suspected Islamic extremists in London last week was run over before being attacked by two men armed with a cleaver and a knife, an inquest heard on Friday.

The inquest in the brutal murder of Lee Rigby on May 22 in Woolwich, southeast London, was opened at Southwark Coroner’s Court in the capital before being adjourned.

Later Friday, Queen Elizabeth II was to visit the barracks in Woolwich where Rigby was based, in a trip arranged before his death.

None of Rigby’s family attended the opening of the inquest, but they issued a statement calling for calm following a rise in community tensions after his death.

“Lee would not want people to use his name as an excuse to carry out attacks against others,” they said.

“We would not wish any other families to go through this harrowing experience and appeal to everyone to keep calm and show their respect in a peaceful manner.”

In a brief hearing, the coroner’s court heard the soldier, who was a recruiting officer, was killed as he returned home after a day working at the Tower of London, his regimental headquarters.

The 25-year-old had to be identified by a dental expert, the court heard. A post-mortem examination had already found that he died from multiple cut and stab wounds.

“On Wednesday May 22, at approximately 2.20 pm, Lee was returning to barracks after a day working at the Tower of London,” Detective Chief Inspector Grant Mallon told the hearing.

“As he walked into Artillery Place (a road in Woolwich), a vehicle is seen to swerve into the carriageway on which he was walking and strike him.

“The two occupants of the vehicle then exit the vehicle and attack him with a cleaver and a knife.”

Mallon, from Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism command, said the soldier suffered “extensive and serious injuries” and investigations were continuing into those responsible.

Security at the court was beefed up for the inquest, which will seek to establish the circumstances of Rigby’s death without apportioning blame. It was adjourned to a date yet to be confirmed.

One man, Michael Adebowale, 22, has appeared in court charged with the soldier’s murder and another, Michael Adebolajo, 28, remains under arrest in hospital. Both men were shot by police at the scene.

Anti-Christian graffiti was daubed on the Church of the Dormition, one of Jerusalem’s leading pilgrimage sites, early on Friday, an AFP correspondent reported.

Police said they suspected Jewish religious extremists of spraying the Hebrew-language insults at the site, where tradition says the Virgin Mary died.

“The attack, suspected to be nationalistically motivated, was discovered on the wall of the Dormition Church in the Old City, and the tyres of cars nearby were slashed,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP.

The words “price tag” and “Christians are apes” were scrawled in Hebrew on the walls of the church, Rosenfeld said, adding police were investigating the incident.

An AFP correspondent said “Jesus is a monkey” was also written on the door to the adjacent cemetery, part of the church complex.

“Price tag” is a euphemism for revenge hate crimes by Israeli extremists, which normally target Palestinians and Arabs.

Initially carried out in retaliation for state moves to dismantle unauthorised settler outposts, they have become increasingly unrelated to any specific government measures.

The attacks tend to involve the vandalism or destruction of Palestinian property and have included multiple arson attacks on cars, mosques and olive trees.

Perpetrators are rarely caught.

At first, the attacks were predominantly in the West Bank, but they have expanded over time to include sites inside Israel, and a number of Christian sites have been targeted.

In December, vandals sprayed anti-Christian graffiti on Jerusalem’s Monastery of the Cross and at an Armenian cemetery, in an apparent price tag attack by Jewish extremists.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem condemned the Friday attack, which it called “a despicable attempt to undermine the coexistence between different faiths.”

Bishop William Shomali added in a statement it was “absolutely necessary to end these acts of vandalism by the means of better educating the youth, especially in schools.”

Pictures released by the Latin Patriarchate showed that the words “Havat Maon” and “slave generation” were also scrawled on cars and a door at the Dormition complex.

“Havat Maon” is the name of a settlement outpost in the southern West Bank, and “slave generation” an apparent play on the name of Dormition, which in Hebrew sounds like “generation from Zion.”

On Wednesday, suspected Jewish extremists carried out a string of attacks on Palestinian cars in the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, apparently linked to the stabbing to death of settler Eviatar Borovsky by a Palestinian in April.

Earlier this month, vandals desecrated graves and damaged property in a West Bank village.

Following Borovsky’s killing, settlers went on the rampage, stoning Palestinian vehicles in the northern West Bank, including a school bus carrying children.

They also smashed windows of a mosque and set fire to Palestinian farmland.

President Goodluck Jonathan and the 'ghosts'

There seems to be a muddle about the way we are handling this issue of Boko Haram. It is my view that we are already jumping the gun and pushing the cart before the horse.

While on one hand we have embarked on the issue of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, on the other hand the Federal Government had already set up a committee on Amnesty.

It is difficult to be friends of those one is facing on the battle field, involving death and destruction of lives and properties. In view of the current situation, there is urgent need for Nigeria to take a positive line of action. This positive line of action must be by way of dialogue. Some years back when the League of Nations had its convention, they established this idea which used to be called “fact finding”.

Whenever there is dispute between two entities, in order to find a lasting solution by way of peaceful settlement there is absolutely the need for dialogue. Such dialogue must involve the two parties to the dispute stating their causes of grievance.

Thereafter, there should be move by both parties to present their terms of settlement upon which both parties could come to by reconciliation and by way of give and take. It is after this that amnesty could come in. Talking about amnesty before dialogue is like jumping the gun which is not advisable in this regard.

It is like telling an accused person that he is found guilty even before he is asked to state his case. There is no doubt that the government must find out the immediate and remote causes of the grievance being nursed by the Boko Haram.

The idea of stating that Western education is wrong is a misnomer and cannot be part of the serious issue in this matter. In the first case, it is unislamic since the Sunnah and Hadith of Islam says, “Knowledge is a sine qua non”.

The Holy Qur’an is full of this issue of knowledge in its content. Secondly, it is unconstitutional to attempt such an idea. There is need for both sides to thoroughly address the issue of religion, ethnicity and politics.

In addition to all these, there is need for the government to address the issue of insecurity and corruption. The nation is disintegrating because of the social menace that at the moment plaguing our nation to the extent that we have now become a pariah among the comity of nations.

Talking about corruption, someone like me will find it difficult to understand that this is the same nation that I served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice for six years in the 1980s and I took no money home.

Then I directed that 35 percent of the money should be paid back to the government for good governance, 25 percent to Nigeria Bar Association as the root where I developed from and 40 percent to the needy and disable people of Nigeria (to about eight organisations including Red Cross and Red Crescent).

Now in retrospect, it is difficult for me to imagine that I was the one paying the salaries of the two staff that I personally engaged to work for the government in the Ministry of Justice throughout that period.

With insecurity, corruption and all other vices facing us in Nigeria at the moment, development will continue to be mere illusion.

For a while now, D’Banj and his management team have been planning to sign in rapper Olamide to their label, however, Olamide turned down the Koko master’s offer, preferring to roll alone for now.

Olamide, who does not want to play the fool at this phase of his career, politely told D’Banj that he was not ready to surrender some of his powers, especially having to be booked for shows only by D’Banj’s management outfit, pleaded for time to even think about the offer as he still wants to work with his present team and taking things as they come for now.

He believes that for now, there is nothing D’banj can do for him that he can’t do for himself.

"In the future, I will consider his offer. If anybody wants me, he should have unfettered access to me. I am just starting out in the profession", he allegedly told close friends.
